McLaren's Lando Norris took his first home victory in a chaotic, dramatic, rain-affected British Grand Prix.

Norris benefited from a 10-second penalty handed to team-mate Oscar Piastri, who was found to have driven erratically during a restart after one of two safety-car periods at Silverstone.

Piastri had led the race calmly through a heavy shower of rain and series of incidents but was passed by Norris when he served his penalty at his final pit stop in the closing laps.

Norris appeared to be crying in his helmet on the slowing-down lap and described the win as "beautiful".

It reduces his deficit to Piastri in the drivers' championship to eight points.

That was eventful. Now, though, it's time to wave goodbye to Silverstone for another year after a another dramatic British Grand Prix. Lando Norris is in dream land with his first ever win on home soil, while his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri cut a frustrated figure following the time penalty that cost him victory.

But the headline today is veteran driver Nico Hulkenberg, who not only secured his maiden F1 podium, but Sauber's first since Kamui Kobayashi took third place at the Japanaese Grand Prix in 2012.

There's a three-week break now before the season returns in Belgium from 25-27 July. It's also a sprint weekend in Spa, so first practice starts at 11:30 BST before sprint qualifying at 15:30 BST.

    See you then!

  3. Hulkenberg on a highpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 6 July

The rubbish British weather delivers one of the feel-good stories of probably the season with Nico Hulkenberg's maiden podium on his 239th attempt. The trophy is actually made out of lego, but I'm sure the German doesn't mind. He made his F1 debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2010 and at the age of 37, is finally able to pop champagne as part of the top three drivers after a brilliantly executed strategy by Sauber. And remember, he started his day on the back row of the grid!

  4. 'It all paid off'published at 18:06 British Summer Time 6 July

A bit more from Lando Norris, the British Grand Prix winner, speaking to Sky Sports: "I wanted to win here more than any other place, there were many obstacles. Enjoying and challenging and rewarding for us all. I got my family all here, my brother, sisters, grandparents everyone, to win it with them here.

"I never want to get expectations too high and not deliver, especially when I have so many people here. When you're driving, you don't realise the pressure, now you realise [post-race], 'did you give them something to cheer about?' and I did. It made it all worth it, which is incredible

"I always believed, 'I can do it'. I was thinking on the grid, 'one of us is going to win out of the 20 drivers, I've got a good chance so why can't it be me?' I'm not always like that but I believed - maybe I should do more of that. I gave myself a chance and it all paid off."

  5. 'No man's land for most of the race' - Hamiltonpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 6 July

Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth in the British Grand Prix: "We lost time or a lot of places through strategy. Not really sure how I was P4 and I came out at P8 so that made life very difficult. I got stuck behind those three cars for a long time.

"Then I stopped early and hoped for a big undercut, but it was so tricky. This car does not like these conditions at all. Big snap and wide in turn three lost me a ton of time and then lots of mistakes. There were so many. Not a good day.

"The ultimate goal is to build up confidence in the car and get faster and faster. It’s like building a wall and knocking it down. When you can’t build that confidence, you are in no man’s land and that’s how I felt for most of the race."

  6. 'You need a bit of luck'published at 17:59 British Summer Time 6 July

    Damon Hill
1996 world champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Silverstone

This is what we said at the beggining isn't it? It's opportunities. The thing is you've got opportunities in a race like this, you need a bit of luck and you need to make the right decisions and be a little bit brave. We saw Fernando Alonso and George Russell go to the slicks a little bit too soon, Lewis Hamilton got it just about right. Oscar Piastri will be ruing that decision to stamp on the brakes, I have to say I do think that is the right decision, I don't think it was the right thing to be doing when you are leading the pack behind the safety car.

  7. 'Great day for McLaren'published at 17:55 British Summer Time 6 July

    BBC Radio 5 Live

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm feeling happy for the team, happy for the drivers. I'm sure Oscar has some bitterness because of having been in the lead and if it wasn't for the penalty. But a great day for McLaren, P1, P2, home grand prix, a really very well executed race by everyone so it is a good day for McLaren. Very positive day."

On Lando Norris: "I think it is, the British Grand Prix, in front of his fans and it was a big stand, all yellow. Big day for Lando, I'm sure he was crying in the car, he will never say that, but I am pretty sure."

On Oscar Piastri's penalty: "Well, we just made our observations to the race direction. We said that we thought the situation was pretty much compromised by the late call of the safety car in, which put Oscar in a difficult position, this was not taken into account somehow. There is no controversy, we take it. We will review what we can do better and we will move on. Still 12 races to go, plenty of opportunities for Oscar to use this extra motivation coming from today."

Is the title race between the two papaya horses now? Max Verstappen managed to rescue 10 points to add to his tally but the Dutchman is losing touch with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in third place.

Replicate or not, a record crowd of 168,000 on Sunday got to see a British driver, who didn't start on pole, lift that stunning trophy for the first time. The total fans at Silverstone across the weekend this year is 500,000.

You don't get to take that home [the British Grand Prix trophy], they give you a replica, that stays in the Royal Automobile Club, back in Pall Mall. It's all part of their collection.

It's the British Grand Prix, that has got names on it, let me tell you, going back to 1950.

Tom: And people say Formula 1 is boring and predictable

Antony: A lot of drivers missed an open goal for a podium, not Hulkenburg who was brilliant and didn't put a foot wrong.

Matthew: Hulkenberg really deserved that podium. He worked so hard for it, we were robbed in Brazil 2012!

Richard: You hope Oscar will watch what he did and learn. Blatantly unsafe. Great for Lando and what a play by Hulk and Stake!

More from Lando Norris: "In terms of being a stressful race, this is as stressful as you can get. It was a good race for Oscar as well. I've got to give credit to Oscar, he was fast the whole way. So a round of applause Oscar, because he put up a good fight.

"I enjoy those moments together when we're on track, not as much when he's ahead of me as when he's behind, but that's life. Credits to him and to McLaren, to win at home in front of all the friends and family we have here, it's pretty amazing.

On his fans: "I wanted to give them something to cheer about but it is a long 52 laps and you never know what is going to happen, especially when it was raining earlier so it's always hard to imagine what it is going to be like. I'm feeling it and it is unbelievable, thank you to all the fans. It was really a beautiful thing."

Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, who claims his first career podium at Silverstone: "It has been a long time coming, hasn't it? I always knew we have it in us, I have it in me somewhere. What a race, coming from virtually last, doing it all over again from last weekend, it's pretty surreal to be honest.

"Not sure how it all happened but obviously crazy conditions, mixed conditions. It was a survival fight for a lot of the race. I think we were just on it, the right calls, the right tyres, the right moment, made no mistakes and yeah, quite incredible.

Over 200 grands prix before his first podium: "Today, I was in denial until like probably the last pit stop, then we gapped Lewis quite a bit with the extra lap, I was like 'OK, this is good, gives some breathing space' but you know he was catching quite quickly. The pressure was there, it was an intense race. We didn't crack. No mistakes and obviously really happy with that.

"I was thinking that he's going to give it all in front of his home crowd, and I was like, 'sorry guys, but it's also my day.' I had to stick my neck out. I'm super happy. Thank you for the great energy and support here, every year."

Oscar Piastri, who finished the British Grand Prix in second place: "I’m not going to say much. Well done to Nico, I think that’s the highlight of the day. I’ll leave it there."

On the safety car incident: "Apparently you can’t brake behind the safety car anymore. I did it for five laps before that. I’m not going to say too much because I’ll get myself in trouble.

"Thanks to the crowd for a great event. Thanks for sticking through the weather. I still like Silverstone even if I don’t like it today."

McLaren's Lando Norris who won his home grand prix for the first time: "It's beautiful. Everything I dreamed of, I guess. Everything I've ever wanted to achieve. Apart from a championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings and in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it.

"This is where it all started for me, I was actually watching you [Jenson Button] on TV many years ago and now thankfully I've been able to have my go.

"Incredible race, stressful as always, but the support from the fans, it made the difference today, so I've got to thank them for it all.

On the last few laps: "Your mind just goes pretty blank. Everything you might think before the race, you forget. The main thing is just don't **** it up, that's rule number one.

"The last few laps I was just looking into the crowd. I was just trying to take it all in, enjoy the moment, because it might never happen again. I hope it does. But these are memories that I'll bring with me forever. An incredible achievement."

The top three reach the podium and I think the cheers for Nico Hulkenberg are on par with that of Lando Norris. The British driver lifts that beautiful trophy above his head and the crowd below goes wild. Hulkenberg then takes the applause - well-deserved for the Sauber man.
