Mercedes' George Russell snatched pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix from Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
Russell beat Verstappen by 0.160 seconds to grab the fastest time just seconds after the Dutchman himself had taken it away from McLaren's Oscar Piastri.
The Australian's team-mate and title rival Lando Norris could manage only seventh place, behind Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and a superb performance from Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin.
The grid sets up a battle into the first corner between Briton Russell and Verstappen just a race after their controversial conflict at the Spanish Grand Prix.

George Russell has the opportunity to bank his and Mercedes' first victory of the 2025 season tomorrow. But the road to glory will be tough, with four-time world champion Max Verstappen alongside him, title leader Oscar Piastri and team-mate Kimi Antonelli just behind, plus an imposing wall that has ruined many a great's race weekend.
It was a disaapointing day for Lando Norris, who will start seventh, Charles Leclerc is another glum driver after his eighth place in qualifying and Yuki Tsunoda will start at the back of the grid because of his 10-place grid penalty for a red flag infringement in third practice.
We'll also keep an eye out to see if Isack Hadjar gets a penalty for allegedly impeding Carlos Sainz. Hadjar has just told Sky Sports he was informed by his Racing Bulls pit wall the Williams driver had aborted his lap in Q1.

McLaren's Lando Norris will start down in P7, he spoke to Sky Sports: "It's not ideal, just too many mistakes, I hit the wall in the last lap.
"I've got confidence, the car felt good today, I just made too many mistakes."
On driving with the new front suspension: "I don't feel a difference, it's not something to make us go quicker."
On the race pace: "It's looked good but it's not been as good as Max [Verstappen], we've clearly not had our advantage around this track comparing to normal.
"It's a lot more of a track where you need very good ride and ability to take some bumps and very low grip.
"The car was quick, maybe the medium tyre was a bit quicker at the end of qualifying but I think our pace is good enough, I'm just a bit too far back again."

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who leads the drivers' championship by 10 points and will start third: "To be honest after how practice went I’m pretty happy with myself at the moment, it was a nice turnaround.
"There’s always the question, do you want a medium [tyre] or do you want a soft [tyre] for Q3, and we went with the soft because we were having a lot of problems and we just wanted to keep things consistent.
"I’m pretty happy with third which is a bit different this year but I will definitely take it here."

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who will start second at the Canadian Grand Prix: "I felt good all weekend, the car was in a good window. This track is quite cool, it feels like a bit of a go-kart on the kerbs and then you have the long straights, heavy braking. You need to be quite efficient on the straights, which I think we are in general.
"Overall, I'm very happy with qualifying. I think the car was working quite well. The tough choice was the tyres, and I think we did the right thing.
"I would always pick P1 [to start], as you always start a bit more forward. But this is fine we will see what we can do tomorrow. I'm already very happy with what we achieved to be on the front row. Tomorrow we can have a solid race."

Mercedes; George Russell, who claims back-to-back pole positions in Canada: "Today was awesome in front of this amazing crowd as well to get the pole.
"That last lap was probably one of the most exhilarating laps of my life.
"On my steering wheel you’ve got the delta and I just saw every corner I was just going one-tenth quicker and I got into the last corner and I was six-tenths off so I knew the lap was mighty. Crossing the line and seeing we were P1 was a real surprise but I was so chuffed with it."
On starting alongside Max Verstappen: "We’re mates so it’s all good. I’ve got a few more points on my license to play with so yeah let’s see."

George Russell says he and Max Verstappen are "mates" and then jokes about having a few more penalty points to play with (remember, Verstappen is one away from a race ban). The fans love it, so give the remark a mix of cheers and pantomime boos.
Charles Leclerc is way down in eighth place for tomorrow's 70-lap race and was furious on the radio, I think, with Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar. The Frenchman has certainly been at the centre of the drama this evening.
