Robert Reid, deputy president for sport at the FIA, has resigned over what he describes as "a fundamental breakdown in governance standards within motorsport's global governing body".

The Scot was a key member of FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem's leadership team when the Emirati was elected in 2021 but the pair have since fallen out amid a series of controversies surrounding the FIA president.

Reid said in a statement that he was experiencing "growing alarm over critical decisions being made without due process or proper consultation".

"When I took on this role, it was to serve the FIA's members, not to serve power," Reid said.

George Russell is all over the road after a lock-up in the Mercedes. After a scenic tour of the Sakhir circuit, he's back on the regular tarmac, soft tyres Ok (I think), to complete the rest of his lap.

Lewis Hamilton is calling in to Ferrari to flag more problems with his car. The seven-time world champion is down in eighth place in this second practice session, over a second off the pace of Oscar Piastri's McLaren at the top.

  11. Hadjar and Hulkenberg get closepublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 11 April

Rookie driver Isack Hadjar is sixth on the timesheets - higher than Max Verstappen, Liam Lawson and previous Racing Bulls man Yuki Tsunoda. The Frenchman is on a set of the mediums but suddenly finds the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg in his way. "What is he doing?!" says Hadjar.

  12. Postpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 11 April

The Sakhir circuit is full to the brim with cars on a mixture of tyres: some soft, some medium, Oscar Piastri and Alpine's Pierre Gasly running the hards. Piastri and Lando Norris are currently lapping in the 1:38s, while George Russell is a 1:39 man in the Mercedes.

Max Verstappen is still experiencing issues with his brakes. For now, all engineer Gianpiero Lambiase can say is, "OK, copy, mate".

Oscar Piastri has gone all hard for these latest laps, while team-mate Lando Norris, leading the title race by one point following Max Verstappen's victory at Suzuka, is still wearing those red boots. Charles Leclerc has finished with his soft stint and has now switched to the yellow mediums.

There are 19 minutes left of the session in Bahrain, all twinkly under the lights now, as Charles Leclerc clock a 1:31.045 on the softs to go fourth on the timesheets. Fernando Alonso also completes a quick red lap and goes 15th on the board.

The majority of the field, meanwhile, are cracking on and gathering data with some long running.

Oscar Piastri holds the advantage over his team-mate Lando Norris so far in this session, but can the Australian take his second pole position of the season tomorrow? And race victory on Sunday? The McLarens are shaping up to be the cars to overcome in Bahrain.

Over in the Red Bull camp, Max Verstappen is on the phone to say the brakes don't work at the final corner.

Hadjar is fifth, Verstappen now sixth.

    My fingers are burning.

Lando Norris swats away Max Verstappen's top time but his seat at the head of the table is taken away by his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri. The Australian is quicker by 0.154 seconds.

George Russell goes third quickest in the Mercedes, but his soft time is half a second away from Piastri's 1:30.505.
