Phew. That was a hot one.

Lando Norris tops first practice in the McLaren with a 1:33.204 on the soft tyre.

Alpine's Pierre Gasly finishes second and Lewis Hamilton, after some struggles with his Ferrari, puts down a late lap on the softs to end his hour in third.

  6. Postpublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 11 April

Williams have sprayed a healthy amount of flow-vis paint on the front wing of Alex Albon for the remainder of this session.

Only a few seconds left to get the final drips of first practice in.

  7. Postpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 11 April

Alex Albon is experiencing some issues with his Williams and radios his pit wall to give them the details. Should he come in and box? Nah, he just stays out instead on his medium tyres and carries on with his run plan.

  8. Hamilton goes P3 on softspublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 11 April

The soft tyres have been put back on the shelf for the likes of Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine's Jack Doohan, with the two drivers now putting the hard compound through its paces.

Ferrari have opted to do Lewis Hamilton's soft run later in the session. The seven-time world champion crosses the line and banks a 1:33.800 which places him third behind Pierre Gasly and front-runner Lando Norris.

  9. Postpublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 11 April

Alex Albon joked the Japanese Grand Prix must've been a boring race if his fiery radio messages were the talk of the paddock afterwards. The Williams man is once again a frustrated figure speaking to his engineer, as the pair go back on forth after Albon's latest outing.

  10. Norris goes toppublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 11 April

Pierre Gasly's time at the top has come to an end. McLaren have sent out Lando Norris for his runs on the softs and the Briton flies to the head of the field with a 1:33.204 with 10 minutes of the session to go.

  11. Browning noted for impedingpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 11 April

The stewards have noted Williams' Luke Browning for impeding. The British driver was going slowly at Turn 13 just as his team-mate Alex Albon was on a flying lap. The pair narrowly avoided a collision, with Aston Martin's Felipe Drugovich, who was just behind the incident, commenting: "Wow, that was close," on the team radio.

  12. Is Sainz at risk of another fine?published at 13:16 British Summer Time 11 April

Carlos Sainz was hit with a 10,000 euros (£8,648) fine last weekend for missing the start of the national (by only five seconds) because of a dicky tummy, something George Russell has called a "very expensive poo". Poor fella.

In the news conference yesterday, he put himself at further risk of a monetary slap from the FIA by using a naughty word while discussing the incident. Although, he did say he'll probably get into trouble for saying it, so at least he's prepared.

Sainz, along with Russell, is a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) and pointed out he would like to know where the money goes when these fines are collected.

He can go the loo as many times as he likes in first practice, as Briton Luke Browning has the keys to his car for the opening hour.

  14. Gasly up to P1 on softspublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 11 April

Is this the weekend Alpine collect their first points of the campaign? They're the only team yet to score so far but Pierre Gasly has just put down an encouraging lap time of 1:33.442 on the soft tyre, beating Alex Albon's quickest time by over four tenths.

Albon, meanwhile, has just been released into the path of the Red Bull while exiting the pit lane. "Oh, sorry," says the Williams man.

  15. Piastri up to P2published at 13:07 British Summer Time 11 April

Oscar Piastri is first of the big dogs to try out a soft tyre run, but the Australian's lap isn't a clean one as he takes to gravel. He crosses the line in the McLaren and goes second behind Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber.

  16. Debrief already for Antonellipublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 11 April

Seems like Kimi Antonelli's first practice session is over. The Italian 18-year-old is debriefing with his team already and Mercedes have posted on X to say they will continue to investigate what caused the issue with his car.

  17. Hulkenberg goes toppublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 11 April

Gabriel Bortoleto's team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg, is next to cross the line on his soft run and instantly goes quicker than his Brazilian buddy by 0.366 seconds, despite a lock-up during his lap.

    The German's time is a 1:34.262.

  18. Bortoleto quickest on softspublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 11 April

The soft tyres have been bolted on at Sauber, so thanks to the boost of the red rubber, Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto jumps above Alex Albon to go top with a 1:34.628.

Oscar Piastri, third in Japan, has also opted for some soft running. We'll see where the Australian places shortly.

  19. Postpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 11 April

Yuki Tsunoda, with his first outing complete for Red Bull, says the important thing for him is to get closer to his four-time world champion team-mate Max Verstappen. The Japanese driver was finished outside the points in 12th at his home race at Suzuka, but his pace was promising. There are issues for Tsunoda to deal with in Bahrain, however, as he's just detailed a slight niggle with the throttle.

  20. Albon goes toppublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 11 April

Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli is having to watch the track action from the garage after reporting issues with Mercedes only a few minutes in to this first practice session.

On the big screen he will have just seen Alex Albon put down a 1:35.180 in the Williams on a set of the medium tyres.
