Peter Kennaugh keeps churning the pedals and has protected his lead so far. It remains at 1:51 as he completes his fifth lap of 12. Still 95 kilometres to go.

His Isle of Man team-mate Mark Christian has clearly decided that it is all in Kennaugh's hands. He, along with English time-trial champion Alex Dowsett and Scotland's Andrew Fenn, have peeled off to retire from the race.

The riders are all stained grey with muddy spray as the heavens open and the rain bashes down once again.

It has looked as nailed on as any gold medal in Glasgow and Australia duly collect their fifth gold medal in men's hockey at the Commonwealth Games with a 4-0 win over India. The Kookaburras follow up their World Cup win with victory in Glasgow to complete a golden summer.

"They believe in how they play and they ran out deserved winners," says former GB Olympic champion Sean Kerly.

Danny, West Yorkshire, via text: If Peter Kennaugh is going to win this in a breakaway he will need help. Surely no rider can outpace a peloton for 160km especially with climbs nearing 20% gradients.

Matt G, via text: This is exactly what Sarah Storey did in the London Paralympic road race, attacked from the gun and won by seven minutes. It can be done!

New Zealand just cannot get a goal. Their attempts go around the net, hit the side of the net, off the post and out again.

They are 43-33 behind with 15 minutes to go, and the gold medals look to be heading to the formidable Australians.

  5. Road Cyclingpublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 3 August 2014

We still have more than 100km - around seven and a half laps - to ride in the men's road race. That is an awful long way.

Peter Kennaugh's lead is up a fraction to 1:51.

The lumps and bumps around the city steets add up to a heady 7,500 feet of climbing by the time they get to the finish line.

"James Willstrop opens the court door and seems to be complaining about something to the officials. The noise, perhaps? Yes, it's the noise. 'Ladies and gentleman, can you do your best to stop your children screaming between points,' says the announcer. It seems the majority of the crowd are in agreement, applauding with gusto."

"Peter Kennaugh's lead is still very healthy, I actually think he has built up a few more seconds. If he gets another minute in the bag then it will be very difficult to catch him.

"Nobody is having an easy ride here. It's not a case of everyone else rolling along and waiting to start racing. This course has packaged things in a very different way."

  8. Road Cyclingpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 3 August 2014

Peter Kennaugh through to notch up his fourth lap in 1:23.07. The Isle of Man rider's leader is up to 1:49 on the peloton. Is there method in his apparent madness? I'm still not sold on the wisdom of these tactics.

The Tour of Austria went off the front very early remember and has been solo ever since.

Chris Ciriello completes his hat-trick of penalty corners before Eddie Ockenden makes it four, and a repeat of Australia's 8-0 drubbing of India in the 2010 final is not out of the question with almost 20 minutes remaining.

"It will be interesting to see if Wales come back and help Geraint Thomas if he is their designated leader. Will they drop back and pace him back in? Thomas has been almost invisible today, which is exactly what we would expect of a rider of his calibre so early in the race."

  12. Road Cyclingpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 3 August 2014

Clank, grind, clang. Geraint Thomas of Wales has a mechanical problem and needs a roadside pitstop to replace his back wheel. The procession of team cars has already passed him by the time he is back onboard and he will have long, lonely and hard ride back to the back of the peloton.

    Pamela Cookey
Injured England netball captain and BBC Sport expert

"The Aussies have come back early after half-time and they seem to have that extra bit of edge at the moment. But the Kiwis have a strong mentality and they need to keep fighting this. If they let the gap grow too big it will be difficult for them to claw it back.

"This second half will be a good battle. Neither team is going to lie down for this."

    Saj Chowdhury
    BBC Sport in Glasgow

"It's not been a thriller so far, perhaps fatigue has set in for both Australia and New Zealand players. But maybe they'll get second wind after the break. The crowd, who have been quite subdued in the Hydro, might also get a boost during half-time from watching children dressed up as babies and more senior citizens doing street jazz."

"Rohan Dennis' crash has really changed the pattern of this race. Australia were one of the heavily-tipped teams, but have lost one of their strongest riders. Peter Kennaugh is completely unaware of the action going on behind him."

  16. Road Cyclingpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 3 August 2014

Rohan Dennis has climbed into the back of the Australia team car rather than plucking a spare bike from the roof rack. His race is done and the green and gold challenge is dented.
