"The gap is remaining at 30 seconds and Peter Kennaugh certainly needs some company. 160km on your own in just too far in my opinion."

You have to say they are favourites - watch the final here.

Peter Kennaugh comes through to complete his first lap in 20:37 and the Isle of Man has a broad grin on his face as he does so.

Rohan Dennis of Australia is at the front of the peloton as they come through 30 seconds later.

Kennaugh has certainly created some mischief in the opening stages of this race.

Get make-shift Isle of Man directeur sportif Mark Cavendish on the phone. Is this your doing Cav?

    It is certainly unorthodox.

    Chris Boardman
Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"This is exceptionally unexpected. Peter Kennaugh has got an awful long way to go, he is working very hard for that lead of 20 seconds. Big energy expenditure from one of the favourites here. I'd be interested to hear the tactical explanation. It has taken everybody by surprise."

  9. Road Cyclingpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 3 August 2014

Isle of Man's Peter Kennaugh has caught everyone on the hop, darting off the front in the opening few kilometres. What's the thinking behind that? Surely not the earliest, most audacious solo break in the history of two-wheeled travel?

He may just be getting in front so he can get a clear line into the twists and turns on the first loop of the city centre.

The field meander out into a rainy Glasgow, but Wales' Jonathan Mould has already been left behind as a mechanical problem leaves him turning pedals furiously without the wheels responding. The team car has hardly got out of second gear before it has to stop and supply him with a fresh rear.

Injured Isle of Man cyclist Mark Cavendish, speaking to BBC Sport: "We are only a small island, 80,000 people up against the bullish teams of the southern hemisphere, but we have six strong guys and I think we can win.

"The other home nations are still strong and have young riders suited to this course, but I know that the team is strong and it's not just Peter Kennaugh. In Delhi in 2010 we controlled the race, ultimately the Australians won but if we ride well today we can get a result."

Cavendish, 29, injured his shoulder on the opening day of the Tour de France in Yorkshire and is unable to compete in the men's race today.

Olympic cycling champion and BBC Sport summariser

"David Millar is a very tactical rider and this is a very tactical course. We saw that really smart move from Emma Pooley in the women's race when she attacked over the top of a climb, and that might be a move for Millar. He can't match the other riders for power but he can match them for brains.

"I'd love to see Geraint Thomas do something here, he is a courageous rider, but Peter Kennaugh is the favourite, he will the man to beat."

  13. Road Cyclingpublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 3 August 2014

The men's road race will consist of 12 laps of the 14km city centre loop that that the women competed over this morning - all adding up to a total distance of 168.24km.

The romantics will want a David Millar victory. The realists might point to his distant eighth-place finish in the time trial to suggest he doesn't have the legs for such feats.

The Welsh pair of Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe are a punchy duo while Pete Kennaugh of the Isle of Man is British champion and the winner of the Tour of Austria.

Commonwealth women's singles silver medallist Kirsty Gilmour, speaking to BBC Sport: "Almost perfect but not as perfect as I could have made it. I'm happy with any colour medal. The field was so strong and to be in that second spot is just great.

"The legs and the head did not quite match up today. Physically I felt great, even on day 11, but I didn't get a great night's sleep last night funnily enough. I wasn't able to put my phone away as much as I would like. I think I knuckled down and gave so much concentration yesterday that I didn't have much left for today. But I am still happy."
