Chants of "England! England!" ring around the National Hockey Centre in Glasgow as England pile forward in search of a winner in the closing stages, but it's New Zealand who clinch it with only their second penalty corner of the match, Simon Child thumping home a rebound.

England take off their 'keeper but it's too late to take advantage of the extra man, and New Zealand now look certain to top the group. That means England v Australia looms as a semi-final.

  5. BBC Coveragepublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 29 July 2014

Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4 has a women's sport special live from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Ruth Holdaway, chief executive of Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation says: "The Commonwealth Games, like the Olympics, is a fantastic showcase. But there are major barriers still for women participating in sport. We know that four in five women are not doing enough exercise.

"By the age of 15 only 8% of girls are active enough. Women tell us they feel that being hot and sweaty and running around isn't feminine. Our role models do make a difference but the reality is that most young girls feel embarrassed at school when they take part in sport."

Darren Campbell explains why the winning time for the 100m last night failed to dip below 10 seconds. New champion Kemar Bailey-Cole ran 10 seconds flat, while five athletes, including the Jamaican, went under 10 seconds at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.

"The simple truth is that it was cold," Campbell, a relay gold medallist at the 2004 Olympics, told BBC Sport. "It's not like they go out on to the track in their tracksuits all warmed up. They are standing around doing all that introduction stuff as the camera pans along and then they race.

"Sprinters' hamstrings are like F1 engines, they need to be heated up to work at their best."

"Qualification mornings can be very difficult, but Greg looked really good. He has great flat speed and jumping ability and when he combines that well he is consistently an eight-metre jumper."

A perfect start to the day for Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford. With his first jump at Hampden Park he secures automatic qualification to the final.

The qualification mark is 7.90m and Rutherford's first jump is 8.05m. Job done for Rutherford. He can go back to the athletes' village and go back to bed.

England team-mate Chris Tomlinson records a distance of 7.89m with his first effort. With 12 men going through to the final, that may well be enough to claim a place in Wednesday's final, but he gets to have another go anyway.

Thrilling stuff from England as a brilliant incursion down the right from Phil Roper finds Adam Dixon free in the 'D', and he smashes the ball into the roof of the net, to the delight - and relief - of the rest of the squad on the sidelines. Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4 has a women's sport special live from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Fiona Hathorn from Women On Boards says: "I looked at one newspaper today and counted the number of male faces in the sports section. There were 26. There were only six females, and two of those were sitting next to Prince Harry."

Minister for Sport Helen Grant says: "There is a debate about women's' sport now and they are becoming stars. Our cricketers are doing well, our footballers too, but it comes back to media coverage. The broadcasters have upped their game since London 2012 but we do need to do more. The print media are lagging behind."

There's controversy at the National Hockey Centre as New Zealand move ahead through a penalty stroke, after a lengthy video referral decides Phil Burrows was shoved over in the 'D'. Naturally, the England players disagree, but a penalty it is and Andy Hayward coolly slots to give the Kiwis a vital lead with a little over 18 minutes remaining.

"You sense the tempo has just gone up a notch, both teams trying to attack a bit more," says former GB Olympic champion Sean Kerly.

There is still nothing between England and New Zealand, with the Kiwis looking slightly more threatening midway through the second half.

England are group leaders and have a marginally better goal difference, so a draw might suit them better, but a win would be huge for both teams.

Scotland's 45-year-old twins Donna and Fiona Robertson and Yana Rattigan of England are among those first up in the 48kg category.

Donna Robertson won judo bronze at Auckland 1990, and Fiona matched her sister at Manchester 2002. Rattigan, married to fellow England wrestler Leon, was born in Ukraine and her clearance did not come through in time to fight for Great Britain at the London Olympics. Watch the action here.
