Mikayla, Hannah, Rodney and Karen have hoovered up tickets for events over the next 12 days.

They have stayed with friends and Rodney is falling in line with instruction. He’s English so has his allegiances but in any other event in which his country doesn’t feature, he’s told by those with him he has to be Aussie.

This Games has cost around £1.1bn to stage but it’s estimated around 1.5bn people will tune in to watch and see what the Gold Coast has to offer. If these smiles are anything to go by, it seems locals are happy with that investment.

Regardless of what you think about the strength of the field and number of competitors in the disability swimming events - which to be honest is pretty disappointing - you can’t diss a world record!

Thomas Hamer looked sublime throughout that 200m freestyle event!

Remember S14 - a category for those with learning disabilities - was only reintroduced to Paralympic competition for London 2012.

They’d previously been banned from all sports following the controversy of Sydney 2000 where the Spanish basketball team were found to have fielded athletes without learning difficulties in the event.

Three greens, around 22 matches going on. If lawn bowls is your thing then this is your heaven.

As you arrive here there’s a relative silence. Focus is in the air, a stark contrast to the hockey venue where the clatter of sticks serves to occasionally break up the sound of Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ which blasts between games.

Scottish bowling royalty Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall is out there.

He excelled at darts in his younger years and at 17 he once beat former professional Cliff Lazarenko during an open darts evening.

“I found darts quite easy and regularly hit 140s and 180s. Who knows how I could have done?”

They’d love Tattie at the Ally Pally.

    Sarah Bailey
    Broadcast Journalist, BBC Channel Islands

Billy Le Poullain became the first boxer to represent Guernsey at any Games but the 22-year-old carpenter from Alderney lost his opening match on points to Pakistan's Zaib Gul.

The boxer, fighting in the 69kg category, was disappointed with his performance but is looking ahead to the next Games in Birmingham in 2022

"I’m devastated. I just underperformed. Just a bad day in the office for me. I know I’m a lot better than that in the gym.....I’ve got to work harder and improve.

"Performing like how I have today, I’m not going to go as far as I believe I should...the atmosphere got the better of me."
