While Charlie Tanfield's cycling buddies were looking to win more medals in the Anna Meares Velodrome, the 21-year-old has been showing off his sand sculpting skills down at Broadbeach earlier today.

"I haven't built a sandcastle in years," Tanfield said as he took part in a special challenge for BBC Sport.

He's a mechanical engineering student and was very methodical in his planning and execution as he tried to sculpt a cartoon character.

After winning the individual pursuit and taking silver in the team pursuit on the track, Tanfield could switch to the roads and Tuesday's 38.5km time trial along Currumbin Beachfront.

"England have three slots and there are four cyclists. I'm hoping to get selected but we'll just have to wait and see," he added.

    Nia Jones is in bits.

The Wales goal defence needs a moment to compose herself before offering zero excuses for her nation's defeat by Scotland.

"Honestly we were poor today and Scotland deserve the win," she tells BBC Sport. "We just didn't bring it, we weren't good enough."

Jones has more than 30 international caps for the Wales women football team, swapping her focus back to netball in January 2017.

In a match full of jostle and hustle, she says that her dual-sport experience is not as useful as you may imagine.

"I think it is actually to my detriment in a match like today," she adds. "I am used to feeling for my player in football at set-plays. I got penalised heavily today and the penalty count really disrupted our flow."

Cate Campbell’s return to form has been quite breathtaking because after Rio 2016 many thought she was a spent force.

No individual honours and her younger sister Bronte on the rise, she then took a break from the sport and missed last year’s world championships.

Her return since has stunned the swim world and surprised even her sister, I’m sure, as Bronte is very much back to number two and Cate in career best form.

23.78 today for gold and surely the world record of 23.67 will go in the near future.

Double Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer on BBC TV

This is the first time I have seen Adam Peaty not looking his best and struggling. He's not looking good but he still won and to get that gold medal is so important to him and is all that matters.

He is such a special athlete and he is still unbeaten in four years.

He will go back home and be raring to go at the Europeans in the summer now but I'm not sure about the 50m now.

'Peaty lacking extra gear'published at 11:34 British Summer Time 7 April 2018

    Swimming

    Nick Hope
BBC Sport on the Gold Coast

Something doesn’t seem right with Adam Peaty.

Don’t get me wrong - he is still phenomenal and clear of his opponents, but 58.84 seconds is a long way off the personal best of 57.13 and he doesn’t seem to have the extra gear we’re so used to seeing in the second half of that 100m race.

His room-mate and close friend James Guy withdrew from the 200m butterfly tonight with dehydration and if he hasn’t been well, that could have impacted Peaty.

The Englishman has admitted his focus is on swimming quicker at the Commonwealth Games and it will be interesting to see how he now performs in the 50m event.

Team-mate James Wilby, who claimed silver, is on the rise though and there’s no-doubt that training day in day out alongside Peaty has had a huge impact on his recent improvement.
