Gold medal - Wales - Aled Sion Daviespublished at 22:18 British Summer Time 3 August 2022

    Men’s discus F42-44/61-64 final

Paralympic legend Aled Sion Davies completes the gold medal set by becoming Commonwealth Games champion for the first time.

Davies wins the F42-44/61-64 men's discus final with a throw of 51.39m.

Davies' gold follows on from the success of fellow Wales Paralympian Olivia Breen who won the T37/38 women's 100m title.

Fellow Welshman Harrison Walsh claims a bronze medal with Sri Lanka's Palitha Halgahawela Gedara winning silver.

Defending champion Dan Greaves from England finishes fourth.

Even though Greaves (54.66) and Walsh (54.76) threw further than Davies, the Welshman was still crowned champion as he produced a Commonwealth Games record.

This was because this competition combines different para-athletic classes so the final result was based on points rather than distance.

Women's Commonwealth Games heptathlon gold medallist Katarina Johnson-Thompson speaking to BBC: "It feels amazing, it feels like this competition has treated my career so well. In 2018 it was my first global gold and it kickstarted my career.

"It has been tough couple of years so hopefully this can kickstart another part of my career. It has been hard, I had moments where I didn't know if I wanted to carry on but to come out here and get the gold and prove to myself that pushing through was worth it I am so happy.

"I did that victory lap with Jessica Ennis-Hill back in 2012 and I remember seeing everyone's faces and that is when I decided to quit university and I wanted to do this professionally, because I wanted that moment and I know it is not an Olympic Games and Tokyo happened but this has just been so incredible.

"The stadium has been packed every day and the crowd has been so amazing I am so happy I was able to put on a performance to them."
