'Waiting is often the hardest bit'published at 16:14 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    Chris Boardman
Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

Chris Boardman, who is part of our commentary team in Birmingham has been chatting about the anniversary of winning an individual pursuit gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

But just how did he prepare for his winning ride...

It’s hard to describe, in sport the waiting is often the hardest bit and it’s often the bit where the waiting is longest.

A lot of riders will sit on rollers or just keep warming up and really they’re just filling time and using energy up and doing more than they need to just to be busy, just to try and cope with the waiting.

I used to read. I didn’t really read, I had a book open, then I used to drift off and have to come back and read the same page several times. That was something I only really started when I reached a really high level of sport, as a way to escape. And those kind of tricks again stay with me for the rest of my life.

Between the semi and the final it’s just hard to describe how horrendous waiting can be for a moment when you can actually affect the outcome.

But from the stroke Sian French's flick is poor and Walton easily saves. Scenes!

A very big chance missed for Wales in the first quarter.

England's silver medallist Georgia Taylor-Brown said: "Really hard, the swim start was odd. We didn't know what was happening, me and [gold-medal winner] Flora [Duffy] felt a bit mugged off. It was a bit chaotic.

"Flora said she was going to go on the bike and I went with her, although I am not sure I did her much good and I was a bit flat on the run, I just didn't have the legs.

"Considering how I felt before the race, I am just happy with a silver medal.

"It's quite muggy and sticky, they are tough conditions and the course is so hard on the run.

"But the crowd was incredible, it gave me goose bumps. It's special, but I am bored of coming home second to Flora, I was a bit gutted I couldn't copy [England men's gold-medal winner] Alex Yee and get gold but I am happy with silver today.

"I am enjoying every minute of this year."

'Everything about it, I just love'published at 15:47 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

    Katie Falkingham
BBC Sport at Lee Valley VeloPark

Can you believe it's 10 years since this place was hosting the London 2012 Olympic cycling? It's a special place.

Laura Kenny thinks so too. Earlier this week, she said: "Everything about it, I just love. Even when I'm walking down the stairs, the smell just brings back memories.

"It is my favourite track and it's always going to be."

I've seen a fair bit of London 2012 paraphernalia knocking around too. Yesterday, in the Olympic Park, I saw someone in their full volunteer get-up that they'd dug out from the back of their wardrobe a decade on!

Australia take emphatic opening winpublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 29 July 2022

World number one side Australia took a massive 95-18 win over Barbados in their opening Group A game. The Diamonds were in scintillating form as they began their campaign for revenge of that gold medal match against England on the Gold Coast in 2018.

The three-time champions will face Scotland tomorrow in the early match from 12:00 BST.

    Still to come this evening...

Two more home nations are in action as Wales take on Jamaica and Northern Ireland will take on world champions New Zealand.

    Women's Triathlon

    BBC Sport

Let's hear from the gold medallist - Flora Duffy.

"No-one has ever won twice and that was weighing on me. The crowd was really behind Georgia [Taylor-Brown] but I was soaking it up and it was really special.

"It’s been a really strange start to the year and coming off the Olympics, and having Covid twice, but I knew if I gave myself time and patience I could put on a good performance here.

"I don’t know that I was comfortable – that was a brutal run course but once you got up it it wasn’t too far to finish and I soaked in the crowd."

On her rival with Georgia Taylor-Brown:

"It’s really special and I was laughing when it was us too at the front – I thought ‘of course it’s us.'"
