But the initial decision to award the corner was harsh with a Ghana defender penalised for deliberately clearing the ball over her own byeline. Instead, her clearance looked to have been sliced accidentally behind.

Ellesse Andrews rode half a lap in the team sprints and saved herself for this one. The pure speed and strength puts her within one ride of the final.

It will be a tough ask for the British riders.

Mitchell is certainly not afraid of hard work - quite controlled and she certainly wasn't looking round with a 10 metre gap. There was no way Finucane was going to close that.

Kelsey Mitchell looks like the rider to beat. Of course, she's the Olympic sprint champion.

She eases to victory in a classy but controlled race, beating Welsh teenager Emma Finucane by 0.470 seconds.

One down, one to go for the Canadian. Best of three, remember.

Next up we have the semi-finals of the women's sprint. If you were with us earlier, you'll know that Wales' Emma Finucane and England's Sophie Capewell both progressed to the last four.

In a best-of-three format, Finucane will take on Canada's Kelsey Mitchell for a place in the gold medal final, while Capewell faces New Zealand's Ellesse Andrews.

Alistair Fielding, who grew up in Dorset but has family from Glasgow, will have to go through the repechages if he wants to progress.

He got fifth place in that heat on his Commonwealth Games debut.

Another great penalty corner move from England sees them score right at the end of the first quarter.

Anna Toman slaps the ball from the top of the d and England forward Hannah Martin is on hand to deflect the ball into the corner.

There was a long umpire check to see if the ball did leave the d during the set-piece. It did, just, and England's second stands.

Not to be for Alistair Fielding. The gaps were rare and when they did appear, kept on quickly disappearing.

The Scot finishes fifth, with Malaysia's Shah Sahrom and New Zealand's Sam Dakin leading the way.

Everyone else goes into the repechages, which takes place in about 20 minutes or so.

The repechage is essentially a second chance to reach the next round. Four riders will qualify through this method.

The fourth and final heat in the men's keirin... Scotland's Alistair Fielding in this one.

Meanwhile, Chris Boardman has recognised the derny rider. It's his old mucker Paul Curran - a former Commonwealth Games team-mate and gold medallist in 1986.

The roof nearly came off the velodrome as Hamish Turnbull stormed through to take that heat. Wow, a lightning turn of speed.

Scotland's Jack Carlin is safely through in second. Job done for him.

What a great finish there by Hamish Turnbull. Slingshot round the bend and into the straight and suddenly Richardson, who looked so in control for most of the race, finds himself in the repechage.

That was brilliant.

Brilliant from Grace Balsdon. She changes the angle and makes it really hard for Sulemana to adjust and get a good tight line on that. Good power, in the slot between the post and the goalkeeper.

So surreal hearing the name David Beckham in a cycling race.

Anyway... Beckham is jostling along with the packs, which includes England's Hayden Norris.

Neither looks like making a serious impression at the front.

Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Paul is firmly in command, crossing the line first with New Zealand's Sam Webster tucked in behind.

Beckham is fourth and Norris finishes fifth.
