Heartbreak for Scotland's Jack Carlin!

The 25-year-old from Paisley won silver in the keirin yesterday but misses out on the podium today.

Carlin won the first race but Australia's Matt Glaetzer fights back to take the metal.

Race supervisors have been reviewing the action, looking at the moment Glaetzer takes Carlin on the bend.

Scotland's Jack Carlin is starting a winner-takes-all race against Australia's Matthew Glaetzer.

The prize? A bronze medal.

He really has come of age as a sprinter this year, he's had some big scalps along the way and it's a big one today too... gold for Matthew Richardson!

Scotland turned it around to beat Kenya 21-17 in Pool A of the women's 3X3 basketball.

Kennedy Leonard top scored with nine points.

Throaty roars of: "C'mon Jack" tried to spur Jack Carlin on.

It was similar to the first race, except this time the Scot didn't quite have the gas at the finish as Matt Glaetzer of Australia held on.

Boy, the decider is going to be tense.

Jack Carlin is one race from going home with a bronze medal in the sprint.

And, after race two, the Scot is still one race from the bronze.

Scotland's Neil Fachie had to settle for silver after Wales' James Ball beat him in the men's tandem B sprint final.

It was the 37-year-old's first defeat in a Commonwealth final after winning his fifth gold in Friday's 1,000m time trial.

"It's great we qualified fastest and got away in the final. But warming up this afternoon my legs weren't there," Fachie told BBC Sport.

"I didn't tell Lewis, because I hoped adrenaline would just come through and win the day. Lewis was phenomenal, he deserved a gold out there. Silver isn't bad. I thought we might nick it."

On missing out on an outright Scottish record of a sixth Commonwealth gold, Fachie jokes: "Now I feel I have to come back in four years. I was hoping I could walk away!"

On the flip side to Welsh joy was Scottish despair...

Wales' James Ball earned his country their first Gold medal of the Games after winning the men's tandem B sprint final.

"It’s incredible, I’ve waited a long time for this," the 30-year-old told BBC Sport.

"Especially in the sprint as well, because everyone knows me and Neil [Fachie] have been going 1-2, so it’s nice to prove to myself if anything, that me and Matt could do it.

"We were happy with just two silvers - the same as last result so not got any better, not got any worse - but to come away with a gold on top of that, I’m so happy."

Earlier we told you Para-cyclist James Ball won Wales' first gold of the 2022 Games.

Ball recorded victory in the tandem B sprint final with pilot Matt Rotherham.

The Welshman beat Scotland's Neil Fachie, who - assisted by Lewis Stewart - was aiming for a Scottish record sixth Commonwealth Games gold

The pair have battled it out regularly, with Fachie claiming his fifth Games gold ahead of Ball in the tandem B 1,000m time trial on Friday.

Scotland women are in action in the 3X3 basketball and are currently losing to Kenya 14-11.

Onto the gold-medal race then.

It's Brit-turned Aussie Matthew Richardson against Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Paul, who is aiming for another gold after winning yesterday's keirin.

Richardson was born in the Kent town of Maidstone before moving to Western Australia aged nine.

Not sure if that's known by the Birmingham crowd but they certainly cheer loudly when the 23-year-old reaches the line first.

The Scot likes to put himself about on the track, and there were a few mind games there before he snuck into Matt Glaetzer's slipstream and came round to steal race one.

Another one of those and he'll have a bronze medal...

Saltires are wafting in the Birmingham air. That tells us Scotland's Jack Carlin has won the first race of his bronze-medal showdown with Australia's Matthew Glaetzer.

Carlin times his sprint round the bend beautifully, edging his front wheel ahead of Glaetzer's before the line.
