Adam Peaty was safely through to tomorrow night's 50m breaststroke final after winning his semi tonight - though still a long way from his best.

He was only fourth in the 100m final - a big shock - but has responded.

"You back a lion into a corner, they're going to bite. I'm backed into a corner now but I'm OK with that," he said.

"It's just as important in an athlete's career to have these moments. You think 'do I want to be here? Do I love the sport as much as I did?'. I don't know. Those questions, I have to address.

"I haven't really had a winter block where I've reset. I haven't even had chance to know where I'm going, it's almost like you get in a car without a destination.

"I've only been in the water for four weeks, I put way too much expectation on myself and now I'm still debriefing and will be over the next three or four weeks."

England's Sarah Davies won gold in a dramatic final in the women's 71kg weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games.

She beat Nigeria's 18-year-old Joy Ogbonne Eze, who, after a strong snatch round, did not complete any of her clean and jerk attempts.

It is a first Commonwealth Games appearance for 2021 world silver-medallist Davies.

"It's a big achievement for Scotland," says Duncan Scott. "We felt we could sneak a medal."

And sneak it they did.

World champions New Zealand weathered the storm to come through an exciting encounter against Malawi in Pool B.

The Malawi Queens play with such flair and skill - they have won just one game this tournament so far but they are certainly one to watch in terms of pushing the big three.

As for the Silver Ferns they just keep rolling on with a third win from three games.

Australia's Emma McKeon picked up her 17th Commonwealth Games medal earlier on, after winning gold in the women’s 50m butterfly final.

"I feel good. It's day four, so two more days to go but I'm well past halfway through my programme, so pretty relieved about that," she told BBC Sport.

On dropping the Worlds for the Commonwealths: "Yeah, I did drop the Worlds to come here just because I needed that extra bit of time off after the Olympics which definitely helped me and got me to where I am now. I grew up watching the Commonwealth Games, watched a lot Aussies do some incredible things and that kind of inspired me and ignited that fire in me to do what I’m doing now.

"I’ve got my close friends and family around me. I think that's what allowed me to take a break. I think it’s important for all athletes to take a break when they need it. It keeps their career going for longer, keeps them in a healthier mental place. Because it is really hard staying at that level for a long time."

It's another South African powerhouse in the second semi as Lara van Niekerk leaves them in her wake. She comes through to win it, with Jenna Strauch second and Molly Renshaw in third for England. Molly is through to the final on Tuesday evening.
