    Men's 100m qualifying

Ferdinand Omanyala had a disappointing World Championships after landing in Eugene just two and a half before the heats following his 29-hour journey from Kenya due to visa issues.

The fastest Commonwealth athlete of 2022, with 9.85secs, can he have a better experience in Birmingham?

No issues in qualifying. A time of 10.07 - the fastest of the day so far - secures the win, ahead of Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme.

Heat four of 10 in the men's 100m qualifying brings up our first false start of the morning. Not bad going really.

Huge disappointment for Raphael Ngaguele Mberlina of Cameroon, though.

Nigeria's Raymond Ekevwo and Jamaican Kemar Bailey-Cole comfortably go through from this one, with Bailey-Cole taking a quick look round before crossing the line.

    Queues

The first morning of athletics action brought some ominous queues around the approach of the Alexander Stadium, but they cleared relatively quickly and the stands filled up.

The organisers have put on plenty of photo ops for the crowd to snap and slap on social media.

Earlier, reigning champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson finished fifth in the opening event of the heptathlon - the 100m hurdles. The second event, the high jump, takes place at 11:15 BST...

Katarina Johnson-Thompson has been through the mill a little bit, she was pulled up in Tokyo last year and has battled with fitness in Oregon too.

Yet mentally I think she's moved on from all the disappointment.

She wants to be here and to have the chance to defend her title. I'm looking forward to seeing what she can do.

Welcome to....Alexander Stadiumpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 2 August 2022

    Alexander Stadium

The Alexander Stadium has been through a major redevelopment that went on for three, Covid-affected years and cost £72m.

What do you get for that time and money? Well, a smart 27,000-seater venue in Games mode that toggles down to just under 18,000 capacity once the Commonwealths move on.

There has been a minor hoo-haa over the track surface however. The Times reported in May that the track installed in Birmingham was not the highest-grade available and speculated that the saving made could cost the city the ability to host track's biggest events in the future., external

Today's action did start a daytime fireworks display though. The pyro smoke briefly made this more sedate crowd feel like they were in with the Galatasaray ultras.
