The good times are rolling for Northern Ireland tonight as featherweight Jude Gallagher has guaranteed himself a medal after beating Pakistan's Ilyas Hussain in the quarter-finals.

Gallagher has already had three fights in the tournament, and has been going brilliantly.

Danielle Hill and Daniel Wiffen are both in with shouts in the pool this evening, while Kate O'Connor has just thrown a magnificent 50.83m javelin in the heptathlon to put herself right back in the medal frame.

    Wonderful Wednesday anyone..?

While Bethany Firth does her thing in the pool for Northern Ireland, heptathlete and compatriot Kate O'Connor is slinging the spear in fine style.

The 21-year-old has opened up with massive first-round attempt of 50.83m.

Here comes the second....it's big. It's very big. But then so was her first. A throw of 50.09m is no improvement.

Still a lead of over eight and half metres over the rest of the field is going to be a big points bonanza.

As it stands, O'Connor is gaining 167 on second-placed Jade O'Dowda and 182 on leader Katarina Johnson-Thompson. She is on her way up to second spot...

Katarina Johnson-Thompson has just seen a huge throw from Kate O'Connor.

It is going to be an improvement on her first throw. She had a 122 point cushion coming into the event.

A season's best puts her back in the lead.

Oh my. Northern Ireland's Kate O'Connor launches her first javelin throw some 50.83m to take the lead in the women's heptathlon.

But KJT responds by delivering a season's best 41.37m, which should put her back in charge.

There is a lot of interest in Jeremiah Azu in Wales and he goes in the third 100m semi-final.

Azu could break the Wales record of 10.11secs tonight held by Christian Malcolm which was set in 2001.

The 21-year-old ran 9.90secs to win the UK Athletics Championships but that time was wind assisted.

    A nice story this.

Four years ago, Mike Edwards flew to Gold Coast as part of the Nigeria team, picked up his accreditation and checked into the athletes village, only to discover his hopes of representing his country in high jump were to be denied.

World Athletics had temporarily suspended the transfer of national allegiances and so Edwards, born in Manchester to Nigerian parents, was tied to Great Britain who he had appeared for at junior level nine years previously.

But, patience and persistence pays off. Four years later, with his switch now approved, Edwards, who is the partner of former British 400m runner Perri Shakes-Drayton by the way, jumps tonight for Nigeria at the Commonwealths.

Intriguing battle this between the brains of Andrew McWatt and brawn of Sebastien Perrine.

McWatt, after escaping with a waza-ari which Perrine thought was an ippon, tries to lure the Mauritian into a second shido with the intention of piling on the pressure in the closing seconds.

The Scot manages to draw out another infringement but not a third as Perrine controls the final stages.

    Bronze goes to Mauritius!

Men's 200m individual medley gold medallist Duncan Scott: "Rivalries or competition gets the best out of us, I can say that for myself and Deano (Tom Dean), we love a race whether that's Olympics, World Champs, or Commonwealth Games. We love the atmosphere we love finals and getting in amongst it. 12 medals is a lot of races, the body is hurting."

Men's 200m individual silver medallist Tom Dean: "Six medals is incredible, and I'm going for that magical seven in the relay. What a great week, it's been head to head on so many races and Dunc got the better of me tonight but it's all about pushing each other on and I can't get enough of this crowd."
