The 21-year-old, who pressed 70kg on his first attempt just trying the sport out one weekend, manages to lift 199kg - a new British record - to leapfrog the two Nigerian Para-powerlifters and slot into the silver medal position ahead of his third and final attempt.

England have a huge mountain to climb [to win by 14 goals] but have proved that they might just be capable of doing it. The pressure they created in that third quarter was constant. They didn't panic and with that man advantage maybe, just maybe this is possible.

Makes you wonder how good Australia are if England are going this crazy just to avoid them.

The Hockeyroos are world number one and have won gold at every Commonwealth Games since hockey's introduction in 1998.

England start the fourth quarter by winning another short. But Sam Ward fires his drag flick over the bar.

The English pair of Liam Pitchford and Ho Tin-Tin have made it into the last 16 of the mixed doubles thanks to a 3-2 win over Singapore duo Isaac Quek and Zhou Jingyi, clinching the deciding game 11-7.

Phil Roper loves a little move and slip flick. It changes the angles and gives him the gap through the defensive position on the line. Short whip, release and brilliant slingshot flick into the far corner.

I can't believe it. England men have a seventh right at the end of the third quarter.

England have a flurry of short corners and finally make one count as Phil Roper drags into the top corner.

It's a brilliant slingshot and England now need eight goals - against 10 men - to avoid holders Australia in the last four. One 15-minute quarter remains.

I have never commentated on a game like this where I have thought "you know what it [14 goals] could happen", because of the red card.

Over at the NEC and following on from the women's lightweight powerlifting final, it's the men's turn to compete for Commonwealth Games glory.

Malysia's Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, the favourite to take the title in Birmingham after winning gold in Tokyo, is currently leading the field with a points total of 147.6 after two lifts - a new Games record.

Nigeria team-mates Innocent Nnadmi and Thomas Kure are both level on 132.5. If they stay on the same points by the end of the competition, then Nnadmi and Kure will have to decide whether to share the silver medal or take part in a lift-off.

What else is there still to look forward to, I hear you ask.

• In diving, England's Jack Laugher will attempt to win a hat-trick of Commonwealth 1m springboard titles in the final at 18:05 BST;
• England's Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, the daughter of TV maître d’ Fred Sirieix, will be joined by compatriots Eden Cheng and Lois Toulson, Wales' Lucy Hawkins, Northern Ireland's Tanya Watson and Scotland's Gemma McArthur in the women's 10m platform final;
• In athletics, there are gold medals to be won in the men's 110m hurdles, discus, long jump and T11/12 100m events, as well as the women's F42-44 & 61-64 discus and T34/54 1500m;
• The rhythmic gymnastics team final and individual qualification will be settled;
• And there are further para powerlifting golds to be won in the men's lightweight, women's heavyweight and men's heavyweight events.

The second round match in the mixed doubles between England duo Liam Pitchford and Ho Tin-Tin and Singapore pair Izaac Quek and Zhou Jingyi has gone to a deciding game.

Pitchford and Ho won the opening two games 11-7, 11-6, before Singapore fought back to take the next two 8-11, 7-11.

Not even a celebration worth noting at the moment because England just need to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Canada will feel hard done by because there is a foul in the build-up but it was a great finish from Nick Bandurak.
