The number of groans inside the packed NEC as the shots landed in that round, my word.

Scotland's Sam Hickey has shaded the scorecard after the first round. Three of the five judges gave it to him.

    Anna Thompson
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

New Zealand are not hanging about and have got off to a flier in their run chase.

They need 111 to win the bronze medal and after four overs are almost halfway there.

Katherine Brunt, normally so dependable with the ball, cannot get her line right and gives away five wides in one over and is furious with herself.

That's certainly not the way to defend a low total.

Scotland hope for first boxing gold since 2014published at 11:50 British Summer Time 7 August 2022

    Men's middleweight final

Here we go. Sam Hickey of Scotland fights Callum Peters of Australia in the men's middleweight final.

Hickey’s stunning stoppage of Lewis Richardson in his semi-final was sweet revenge for the Dundonian as the Englishman had beaten him the last four of the Europeans in May.

That bronze did make him the first Scot for 16 years to medal at a Europeans, while he also has another bronze from the 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games.

He gets the chance to win Scotland’s first Commonwealth gold since Charlie Flynn and Josh Taylor in 2014 against Australian Peters, who may only be 19 but what the Aussie lacks in years he certainly makes up for in confidence.

“I'm young and I'm handsome. I'm the real deal!” he said. “Anyone else who gets in the ring with me will be sorry and will go the same way. I love it. I love using my power and getting the job done.”

Middleweight is Australia’s most successful division at the Commonwealths having won three golds through Philip McElwainein 1978, Paul Millerin 2002 and Jarrod Fletcherin 2006.

Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour will miss the chance to go for gold in the badminton after losing to Canada's Michelle Li in the women's singles semi-final. Gilmour took silver at the 2014 games after losing to Li in the final and bronze in the 2018 games on the Gold Coast.

She will battle for bronze later against Jia Min Yeo of Singapore. Can she make it three medals from three games?

Rosie Eccles has done it for Wales. She has won the gold.

A brilliant display of boxing from Eccles. She kept the attacks coming against Australia's Kaye Scott, forcing two standing counts with the referee calling it a day for Scott in the second round.

The 26-year-old, who took silver in the welterweight category four years ago, is only the second Welsh female to win Commonwealth boxing gold after Lauren Price.

It is Wales' seventh gold of the Games, and their second today after Joshua Stacey defeated Lin Ma in the final of the men's table tennis singles classes 8-10.

Victoria Ohuruogu: "I think I'm really chuffed to go sub 51 (seconds). PB, silver medal, I always aim high and I just have to back myself but I'm happy.

"In the 400m you really have to run your own race. I'm happy I stuck to my race plan."

On her sister Christine's continuing influence and legacy: "I am just so proud that our name is still on the track."

Jodie Williams: "I pulled off something - obviously lane nine was rough. I went for it from the gun and had to hold on. I am delighted to get on that podium."

The final race of Tom Bosworth's career is about to start.

The English race walker was a silver medallist in 2018 and is set to retire after today's 10,000m race because of persistent back problems.

Australia have won the past six Commonwealth Games titles, previously over 20 or 30km, with Declan Tingay among the favourites today.

Another athlete to keep an eye on is England's Callum Wilkinson, who placed 10th in the 20km walk on his Olympic debut last year.

England have stuttered their way to 110-9 in their 20 overs against a very disciplined New Zealand.

It's not a large total to defend in their quest for a bronze medal.

But England did restrict New Zealand to just 71 in their group game and will need their bowlers to put in a similar performance if they are to come away with bronze at Edgbaston.

    Women's light middleweight final

Next up in the boxing, Rose Eccles of Wales takes on Kaye Scott of Australia in the women's light middleweight final

This is a rematch of the bronze medal bout in 2018 that Eccles won to set up a final against England’s Sandy Ryan.

She lost that, but will be confident of going one better against 38 year-old Scott, who has lost to Welsh fighters at the past two Games - having also been beaten by Lauren Price in the quarter-finals in 2014.

Eccles made short work of Northern Ireland’s Eireann Nugent in the semis with a clinical win on points.

She has a great chance to emulate middleweight Price and become only the second Welsh female to win Commonwealth boxing gold.
