The second of the six dives is the reverse dive with pike and the England duo of Jack Laugher and Ant Harding collect a score of 51.6 and they have pulled clear of the Malaysian pairing of Yiwei Chew and Tze Liang Ooi in second.

Top seeds and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia have just edged past Scottish twins Christopher and Matthew Grimley in their opening game 21-19.

And it looks like the favourites are taking their form into the next game, already 10-4 up.

The required dives are the easy dives, fixed at 2.0 of difficulty.

The clue is in the name - this is the synchronised diving competition - some of the judges specifically look at the synchronisation and the others look at the execution.

You will see a selection of marks which they are averaged out - if there is a line through it it doesn't count, and then multiplied by the degree of difficulty.

Jack Laugher and Ant Harding of England, the world silver medallists, get under way with a back dive and come up with a score of 49.8, which puts them in the joint lead at the end of the first of six rounds, level with the Malaysian pairing of Yiwel Chew and Tze Liang Ooi.

In the men’s 65kg freestyle round of 16 matches Scotland's Ross Connelly has just beaten Brahm Richards of New Zealand 10-0.

This is Connelly's second tilt at a Commonwealth medal having finished 10th aged only 18 in the 57kg weight category four years ago. Having just turned 23, the Cumbernauld wrestler makes the step up to 65kg.

There's also been success for England's George Ramm who has defeated Australia’s Mostafa Rezaeifar with a victory by points.

Ramm is back for a third Games, having lost in the bronze medal match in 2018 after coming through via the repechage.

Northern Ireland's Ciara Mageean wins the first 1500m heat in four minutes 13.52 seconds, with Australian's Abbey Caldwell and Linden hall, and Kenya's Edinah Jebitok completing the top five.

Wales' Melissa Courtney-Bryant faces a nervous wait. She comes in sixth in 4:14.46 and must wait to see if that's enough.

Wow. An extraordinary roar for Jack Laugher and Ant Harding as they are introduced to the crowd. That's definitely the loudest I've heard the diving crowd across the two days of action so far.

Lots of England flags, some Scotland fans too, and ooh is that a Yorkshire flag too for Laugher? Big fan of that myself.

Scotland's Laura Muir does enough, finishing fifth in the final automatic qualification in four minutes 14.11 seconds.

Still six together at the front. Laura Muir is at the back of it but she just needs to be in the top five...

It's a slow and tactical heat, though.

The first women's 1500m heat is under way!

With the first five and two fastest losers able to get in to the final, there's a chance for the whole field to make it through here....

As expected, defending champion Lindon Victor retakes the overall lead with 5989 points, 52 points ahead of former leader Cedric Dubler.

Scotland's Olympic and world medallist Laura Muir is already through to Saturday’s 800m final.

And today she's aiming to book another shot at gold in 1500m qualifying.

Also in her first heat are 2018 bronze medallist Melissa Courtney-Bryant of Wales and Ciara Mageean of Northern Ireland.

Scotland's Jemma Reekie and England's Katie Snowden go in heat two, where they are joined by African champion Winny Chebet of Kenya, Uganda’s 2014 Commonwealth bronze medallist Winnie Nanyondo and in-form Aussie Jessica Hull.

Australian Cedric Dubler looks set to lose his decathlon lead to defending champion Lindon Victor in the discus.

Fellow Aussie Daniel Golubovic is on course to move above his compatriot too after throwing a season-best 49.85m.

Dubler is down in sixth in this event after his first throw.

The biggest cheer is reserved for Papua New Guinea's Karo Iga, however. In last place overall, he has just produced a discus personal best of 31.88m.
