It's tight, it's tense and it's advantage the Hockeyroos in the women's hockey. They have a slender lead over India with one quarter of the second semi-final left. The prize for the winners is a date against England in the final on Sunday. Will India haul themselves back into this?

Down the back straight these guys have been running into quite a stiff headwind That's maybe taking it out of them, also the climate - it is very chilly. Both the top two looked really strong and can get quite a bit better.

Superb run from Matthew Hudson-Smith, the local boy.

They're off! Even opening 100m as Matthew Hudson-Smith makes a patient start.

Here he goes... the Englishman makes his move on the bend, with the stadium volume increasing along with his mph.

Hudson-Smith cruises into the lead and crosses the line first in 45.77 seconds.

    Lovely job.

Last but not least, it's Matt Hudson-Smith's semi-final.

The Englishman is the favourite to win here on his home track, having won bronze at the recent World Championships and also breaking the British record earlier this summer.

Jamaica's Nathon Allen, on Hudson-Smith's inside, has a 44.13 PB but hasn’t broken 45 seconds this year.

Clapping the triple jumpers with gusto is one way to try to keep the hands warm on a cold evening.

And it seems to be helping the athletes.

We've had a new Commonwealth Games record from Jamaica's Shanieka Ricketts and England's Naomi Metzger is in the bronze-medal position after beating her personal best twice so far.

    Michael Johnson

Smooth as silk from Jonathan Jones. The man from Barbados looks cool and composed as he cruises to victory in 45.82 seconds.

Who will join him? Zambia's Muzala Samukonga leaves it late but comes through to finish second.

Such a contrasting style to Jones. More arms and legs than an octopus. He looks like me after an hour's 5-a-side, grimacing and holding his back.

Wales' Joe Brier fades to finish eighth.

A high-quality semi-final next, with four of these lads breaking the 45-second barrier this season.

Two of the medal contenders - Jamaican champion JeVaughn Powell and Jonathan Jones of Barbados - go in this one.

So too does Zambia's Muzala Samukonga, who ran 44.69 seconds in the heats.

Wales' Joe Brier might have his work cut out.

In the end, none of those two qualify for the final.

Steve Solomon was looking good heading into the street but looked like the final 30m of the track had turned into treacle.

Uganda's Haron Adoli comes through from the chasing pack to be somewhat of a surprise winner, with Kenya's Boniface Mweresa joining him as the other automatic qualifier.

The beaming grin across Naomi Metzger's face tells us she is loving life.

The English athlete again beats her previous PB - the one coming into this Commonwealth final - but it is nine centimetres short of her opening jump.

Metzger is third after a round and a bit following her effort of 14.32m.

Jamaica's Shanieka Ricketts leads after smashing the Games record with a first jump of 14.94m, but pulls out of her second after belting it down the runway before deciding something wasn't right.

Dominica's Thea Lafond currently occupies the silver medal spot with 14.39m.

England's Scott Lincoln on his bronze medal in the shot put: "I was getting a bit over-excited as this is the first time I have had a crowd like that. Absolutely incredible. They were absolutely electric. Like a goosebumps moment every time you went into the circle.

"It was just a matter of calming myself down, which I did by round four and settle into it.

"It was a massive whirlwind but we got the job done in the end.

"I wanted to prove I could get a medal. This is a massive confidence boost to pull it out. I had a bad first three throws but I managed to pull it out by round four and five. Incredible."

What a start by Naomi Metzger! The English athlete sets a new PB with a jump of 14.32m and that puts her into the lead.

    Not for long, mind.

Next up is Shanieka Ricketts and she monsters that with 14.94m. Wowwww! A new Games record for the Jamaican.

Conditions look good out there at the Alexander Stadium, judging by these leaps.
