  1. That's all folks

So that's day five of the World Cup wrapped up.

Some encouragement for the debutants Afghanistan despite the eventual margin of defeat.

You can read more in Stephan Shemilt's full report from Manuka Oval.

That's not the end of the cricket for today - we'll resume later with the action from Nelson as Zimbabwe meet UAE in Pool B from 21:30 GMT.

Make sure you join us and thanks once again for stopping by.

    Taskin Ahmed celebrates
  2. Captain's reaction

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza: "As I said before, the first match in the World Cup is very important, and we set the tone.

"We had a reasonable start today though later on it got a bit close, but Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim were brilliant.

"This kind of match always has pressure, but I am very happy as the boys adapted very well."

    Charles Dagnall

    BBC Test Match Special

"We've seen great crowds so far for this tournament. Crowds of more than 10,000 both here today and in Hamilton when South Africa played Zimbabwe. I hope that intensity continues as it makes for a great atmosphere."

  4. Captain's reaction

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi: "We bowled very well in the first 35 overs, especially the fast bowlers who took early wickets.

"Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim played very well in the middle and took the score to [beyond] 260. Three wickets down for three runs was not a good start on the batting side, but in the middle Nawroz and Samiullah took the game on.

"It is not a good start in the World Cup but hopefully we will play better in the next game."

  5. As it stands

Here's what that win for Bangladesh does for the standings in Pool A.

    Pool A table

Admittedly it's early days, but Afghanistan have come out of that game with a better net run rate than England or Scotland.

  6. Player reaction

Man of the match, Bangladesh wicketkeeper and batsman Mushfiqur Rahim: "We were under the pressure as the favourites and expected to win the game.

"But in a World Cup anyone can win any game. Hopefully we will carry on that momentum into the next game.

"We need to push our paddle - it will not be easy against Australia at the Gabba, but we will hopefully give our best shot against them."

"Bangladesh will be delighted with their victory in front of this 'home' crowd. They looked very shaky at the start when they were four wickets down, but they built an excellent partnership between Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim. Since that, they looked in charge to take this game home.

"They could cause an upset against an England side that are hit and miss. The group is strong with Australia and New Zealand, but they will be looking at touching up England and Scotland. Sneak a couple of wins and they will think they can do well in this group."

  9. Victory for Bangladesh

A bit of a tame end to what was, at times, a very watchable and entertaining game. On paper, it's a pretty comprehensive win for Bangladesh, but Afghanistan asked questions of them at times and with a bit more discipline and experience, they could have been chasing a lot less. Stay with us, we'll have more reaction.

  10. Bangladesh win by 105 runs

Aftab run out 14 (Afg 162)

It's all over as confusion breaks out between the last Afghanistan pair. Aftab hits one to point. There's a diving stop in the field. They say yes, they say no, they almost meet in the middle and all the while the throw comes in and Aftab is run out and that's the game. Bangladesh win by 105 runs.

    Afg 162-9

Aftab isn't finished yet and he clubs a huge six straight down the ground off Shakib.

  12. Afg 154-9 (target 268)

One fast bowler makes way for another as Shapoor Zadran comes in at number 11 for Afghanistan. He's been padded up a while though in the changing room as the television cameras have shown.

  19. Afg 146-7 (need 122 more to win off 60 balls)

Bangladesh captain Mortaza will be delighted his side have seemingly come through this game with a win after a testing start earlier. Until Shakib and Mushfiqur came together for their fifth-wicket partnership of 114, they were under the cosh a bit. That's nine overs bowled for the skipper with figures of 3-20.

  20. Post update

    Neil Manthorp

    BBC Test Match Special

"This will be a huge source of relief to Bangladesh after they were so tentative in the first 20 overs. They really back themselves for a place in the quarter-finals. They believe they have the fast bowling base covered for the first time at a World Cup. People will say their last series win was only against Zimbabwe, but they did win that 5-0."

  21. Afg 145-7 (target 268)

Afghanistan will have won some admirers for this fighting display today with both bat and ball, having been 3-3 earlier. They look like a side capable of causing some real problems for the Test-playing nations later in the competition, including England of course. Shakib Al Hasan gets the Aftab treatment this over as he hits a one-bounce four straight down the ground.

  22. Afg 140-7 (Mortaza 8-2-19-3)

Aftab Alam and Mirwais Ashraf are the new men at the crease for Afghanistan after those two quick wickets. Aftab flays one away, clearing his front leg and it races to the point boundary for four. Not hanging around then. That's three wickets to the Bangladesh captain Mortaza after he claimed the scalp of Nabi.

  24. WICKET

    Nabi c Sarkar b Mortaza 44 (Afg 136-7)

Disaster for Afghanistan as two go down in two balls. Nabi takes a swing at a half-volley from Mortaza, but can only pick out mid-off. He sliced at it and that's the end of the captain's knock and probably his side's slim chances.

  29. Batting Powerplay

Afg 131-5 (need 137 more to win off 84 balls)

It's batting powerplay time for Afghanistan and the required rate is just under 10 an over. Not completely impossible. Nabi brings up the 50 partnership with a lofted drive over mid-off as he makes some room to free his arms. Only five off the over though despite the captain's attacking intent.

  30. Afg 126-5 (target 268)

Rubel continues from the Swimming Pool End - it's pictured below again in case you missed it earlier. Mr Mitchener informs me there is a Duck Pond End in Port Elizabeth, South Africa (maybe the two could be twinned?). Mohammed Nabi is upping the rate with a couple of fours in succession to move this partnership in sight of 50.

Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan are quality spinners, but the moment that the fast bowlers picked up three wickets Bangladesh were in charge. They have had a stranglehold throughout and have showed a lot of good discipline, with a couple of good catches being taken. They have not let Afghanistan off the hook at all."

  34. Afg 110-5 (need 158 to win from 102 balls)

Rubel is back on the field and back on to bowl after that nasty looking knee injury after he took the catch on the boundary to dismiss Nawroz. More tidy stuff from the right-arm seamer and just five are added from his return over.

I once saw Mohammad Nabi playing for the MCC in a match against Sri Lanka A at Arundel when he was with the Young Cricketers. He showed his big hitting ability by getting off the mark in both innings with a six. Afghanistan could do with some of that right now. He plays an out of control pull off Soumya, which falls safe. But the captain accidentally runs in to the bowler as he ball watches. Looks like he'll have a bashed nose for his troubles after that.

Soumya Sarkar's medium-pacers prove difficult to get away once more as just the one run is added for Afghanistan.

  42. Afg 95-5 (Nabi 11, Najibullah 9)

Mohammad Nabi shows his strength on the off side with a square drive for four off Mahmudullah's final ball of an otherwise tight over. Just enough to keep Afghanistan interested.

  43. Afg 89-5 (need 179 more to win off 132 balls)

Sabbir Rahman is on to bowl for Bangladesh now with his leg breaks - the seventh different bowler used. More tough going for Afghanistan against the slower stuff as the required rate moves above eight-an-over.

  44. Afg 85-5 (target 268)

Back in Australia's capital, Najibullah opens his account with a nice sweep shot off Mahmudullah for a four behind square.

Here comes the replay and it's not good news for Samiullah as he tries desperately to make his ground coming back for two. But he's short. Shabbir was the man with the throw in from the deep square leg boundary and Mushfiqur whips off the bails on the bounce.

Thank you Mark, it's good to see Afghanistan staying in the contest here. Samiullah shows some intent by whipping a half-volley over the infield on the leg side for four off Taksin. But, a couple of balls later there's an appeal for a run out as they try to take a quick two. We're going upstairs for a look.

  49. Afg 73-4 (target 268)

Bangladesh were 101-2 at the halfway point of their innings (but were soon to lose a couple of wickets) - Afghanistan will be a little short of that mark, but make no mistake, they're still in this game. And to describe either their World Cup debut win, or a debut defeat... here's Adam Williams.

"Cricket today is being played on very flat pitches. In one-day cricket, you don't want short matches. That's not good for television advertising revenues, and so most one-day cricket is played on shirt-fronts."

  51. Afg 69-4 (Samiullah 35, Nabi 2)

A sub-plot for Bangladesh - with Rubel off the field with a knee injury, he must be some sort of a doubt over whether he can bowl again, having only bowled four of his 10 overs, so Bangladesh may need to dip into their part-timers. For now, they turn back to teenage seamer Taskin Ahmed. Nabi, who favours the pull shot, helps himself to a couple of singles.

  54. Ouch!

But the wicket has come at a cost for Bangladesh, as Rubel has injured his knee taking that catch. He's treated by the Tigers physio on the outfield, and when he's helped to his feet, he can only limp off the field.

After that slightly surprising decision to go to Soumya, Bangladesh bring Shakib back and immediately the shutters have come down again. Samiullah moves to 32 from 63 balls with a single, Nawroz has brought hit strike rate up a little and he has 27 from 56.

Somewhat surprisingly, Shakib's spin is superseded by Soumya Sarkar's seam - and Afghanistan find easier pickings against him, with runs off every ball and a couple of hustled twos making it a profitable over - nine from it, and the Afghan fans are up waving their flags again.

Mat Jones: Afghanistan with first match nerves. Although 3-3 did not look good.

Alex Barrett: So Canada's unwanted record still stands.

  63. Afg 53-3 (Nawroz 22, Samiullah 27)

And if anything, Mahmudullah is even quicker through his over than Shakib. Shouldn't be any over-rate problems here for Bangladesh - the TMS team reckon over-rates were the reason why Afghanistan's opening bowler Shapoor Zadran didn't come back for his last three overs, given that he was pushing off from near the sightscreens. This stand is worth 50.

  64. Afg 50-3 (target 268)

Shakib, light on his feet as he runs behind the umpire before he becomes a whirl of arms as he delivers the ball, is quickly through his third over - two singles from it, as Afghanistan reach the landmark of 50. Remember, this is their World Cup debut, so they're breaking new ground with every run.

  65. Afg 48-3 (Nawroz 20, Samiullah 24)

It's spin from both ends as off-spinner Mahmudullah enters the fray as Bangladesh's fifth bowler. Some old-school middle-overs accumulation would suit Afghanistan here - and they take four singles from the over. Although they'll have to step it up eventually - the required rate is up to 6.66.

  66. Email tms@bbc.co.uk

Masood Masoomi from Herat, Afghanistan: I trust in our Afghan national cricket team and the players, they will try their best to win over Bangladesh. 67. Drinks break

    Afg 44-3 (target 268)

Shakib, having just shelled that catch, makes some amends with a tight over of left-arm spin, just two singles from it. Nawroz has 18, Samiullah has 22, the players have a drink, and both sides have a chance to regroup and refocus.

  69. Dropped catch

    Afg 42-3

Suddenly things aren't going Bangladesh's way as Taskin is pulled for four through mid-wicket by Nawroz for his first boundary, and then when Samiullah uppercuts to third man, Shakib dives forward to take the catch, and has the ball in both hands for a good second or two before it slips out like a bar of soap. A potential turning point for Afghanistan?

  70. Afg 35-3 (target 268)

Shakib Al Hasan was one of a trio of Bangladesh left-arm spinners who operated in tandem (or should that be "in tricycle"?) at the 2007 World Cup when they shocked India to qualify for the Super Eight phase. Of the other two, Mohammad Rafique is long retired while Abdur Razzak is still playing but has not represented the national side since last August. Shakib's first over is a better one for Afghanistan, a couple of singles and a brace of twos from it. Having scored six from his first 32 balls, Nawroz has scored five from his last three!

Haris Akbar: Can't better the city of poets (Herat), instead I'm emailing you from the rather exotic surrounds of Sunbury-On-Thames. Been up since silly o'clock to cheer the lads on. Whatever the result, the experience will definitely stand the Afghan players in good stead.

  72. Close!

    Afg 29-3

Taskin digs one in to Samiullah, he turns his head away from it and the ball appears to fly off his helmet - or was it an edge? - over short fine leg, keeper Mushfiqur Rahim gives chase and dives after it but can't take the catch. The fact that a leg bye isn't signalled shows that the umpire felt there was bat involved. Samiullah has 19 from 34 balls, Nawroz has six from 30.

  74. Afg 25-3 (target 268)

Bangladesh's seamers have been disciplined today, not giving Afghanistan anything loose to hit, and building pressure through dot balls may be the way to go in this situation. A maiden over, and Mortaza has figures of 6-2-10-2.

Bangladesh make their first bowling change but it's one right-arm seamer for another as Taskin Ahmed, one of only two teenagers at this tournament, is into the attack. (The other is Usman Ghani, who's in Afghanistan's squad but is carrying the drinks today). A good start by the youngster, who was born less than a year before the 1996 World Cup.

  83. Afg 18-3 (target 268)

Rubel has been the king of the slingers early on here, but strays a bit towards the end of his over as a bouncer is ruled to be an aerial wide, while Samiullah helps another loose delivery through the covers for a couple.

Great to hear from you, Rafiq. Any more Afghanistan fans out there?

  85. Afg 13-3 (Nawroz 3, Samiullah 7)

A rebuilding job is under way here - I think that's where 50-over cricket outpoints Twenty20 as Afghanistan have time here, if they bat sensibly, to dig themselves out of this hole. If this were T20, the game would be over already.

Nawroz has worked his way to a Boycottesque three runs from 18 balls. (Or, given that this is Afghanistan's World Cup debut, those of you who remember the first game of the 1975 tournament might say... Gavaskaresque?).

  86. Afg 12-3 (target 268)

Samiullah pushes Rubel for a couple of twos, and Afghanistan are into double figures.

If you're being pessimistic, their first target will be to overhaul the lowest ever World Cup score - Canada's 36 all out against Sri Lanka in Paarl in 2003.

  87. Afg 8-3 (Nawroz 2, Samiullah 3)

Not much foot movement from Afghanistan's batsmen, they look a little rabbit-in-headlights after being caught cold by Bangladesh.

If you're just waking up - firstly, where have you been? Secondly, you've missed an interesting game so far, as Afghanistan started and finished well when Bangladesh batted, but have left themselves an uphill struggle after losing a wicket in each of the first three overs.

Those three slips are joined by a helmeted short leg as Rubel, very much a fast bowler of the "slinger" variety, begins his second over. Nawroz adds a single, bringing new batsman Samiullah Shenwari on strike. Having been taken out of the attack for running on the wicket, he'll certainly want to make up for that... He works a two off his legs.

  99. Javed Ahmadi - the Afghan Glenn Maxwell?

Afghanistan coach Andy Moles places great faith in Javed Ahmadi, likening the 23-year-old opening batsman and occasional off-spinner to Australia's Glenn Maxwell.

Ahmadi, who grew up in a refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan, moved to Afghanistan as a 15-year-old and has played in 17 ODIs since his debut in 2010.

"He opens the batting, he is very positive, hits the ball and wants to take the game to the opposition, bowls good off-spinners and is a good fielder, so he's always in the game," Moles said.

The big paceman gives it everything, but Mushfiqur is on top form, digging out a yorker and scampering a single. This stand is worth 94.

  133. Close!

    Ban 186-4 (Shakib 39, Mushfiqur 39)

Afghanistan persist with Aftab, who's been a little expensive in this powerplay, but it nearly produces a wicket as Shakib pushes a quick single and Shapoor Zadran's throw only just misses the stumps, when a direct hit would have run him out. Reprieved, Shakib - number one in the ICC's all-rounder rankings - smacks Aftab for back-to-back boundaries.

  135. How's stat?

He has 27 from 24 balls, while Shakib has 21 from 24.

  139. Ban 146-4

Bangladesh need boundaries - and Mushfiqur, who'll take on anything with too much width outside off, obliges with a lofted cover drive for four. Part-time spinner Javed has been expensive for Afghanistan, and I wonder if that's the last we see of him in the attack.

The shackles are finally broken as a square drive flies backward of point for four - Shapoor's 40th delivery, and the first boundary off him. Time for drinks.

When Mahmudullah fishes and misses, Nabi posts a slip - and then a leg slip for the left-handed Shakib, who has a little word with the umpires, who seem happy that the square leg fielder is in front of square (as three men behind square on the leg side would mean a no-ball). Shakib's not happy, but Shapoor has a marvellous 1-11 from five.

However, through disciplined bowling and regular wickets, you feel it is Afghanistan that are on top. But, on a slowish pitch, chasing might be tricky."

  155. Ban 109-3 (Mahmudullah 21, Shakib 5)

Afghanistan keep Mirwais Ashraf's last over up their sleeves and turn back to bearded off-spinner Javed Ahmadi, who went for 10 off his first over. There's a touch of the Graeme Swanns about his bowling action, and he'll be fairly happy with three singles from the over.

  157. Ban 106-3

Big cheers for Shakib Al Hasan, the lynchpin of Bangladesh's batting order. Shapoor switches to bowling over the wicket, but gets his line wrong and it's a legside freebie for Shakib who helps it away for four.

  159. WICKET

Soumya lbw b Shapoor Zadran 28 (Ban 102-3)

Thanks, Adam - Afghanistan turn back to their opening bowler Shapoor Zadran, and it works a treat as he traps Soumya lbw. Charging in round the wicket, the left-arm quick spears one into the left-hander's pads, and having used up that review earlier, there's nothing Bangladesh can do. Even if they had, the ball-tracker shows the ball clattering into leg stump.

  160. Ban 101-2 (Soumya 28, Mahmudullah 18)

So, a sign of a counter-attack here from Bangladesh as they look to get the run rate up. More sloppy fielding from Afghanistan as Hamid Hassan makes a real mess of an attempt to dive on one at mod-off, but goes feet first and misses it. Soumya then brings up the 100 to huge cheers as he flicks one for four off his legs to fine leg. As we reach the halfway mark of the innings, time for me to leave you in the hands of Mark Mitchener.

First maximum of the match as the left-handed Soumya dances down the pitch and clubs Mirwais over long-on for six.

  163. Ban 86-2 (Soumya 17, Mahmudullah 14)

New bowler on for Afghanistan in Javed Ahmadi. A sloppy start with his off breaks as the left-handed Soumya takes advantage of a rare loose ball to pull it away for four. Bit of a platform building here for Bangladesh with the partnership reaching 34.

  164. Ban 76-2 (Mirwais 8-3-17-2)

Mirwais Ashraf is a relative old hand for Afghanistan in ICC events. He was part of the squad for the 2012 and 2014 World Twenty20 tournaments. He ran out David Hussey against Australia in the 2012 tournament in Sri Lanka. Back in Canberra, he reels off his third maiden of the day.

  166. Ban 76-2 (Soumya 11, Mahmudullah 10)

Bangladesh, who have not played international cricket since completing a 5-0 ODI series whitewash of Zimbabwe on 1 December, lost both their warm-up matches ahead of today's game. They performed creditably in the three-wicket defeat to Pakistan in Sydney on 9 February, with Tamin Iqbal and Mahmudullah both hitting half-centuries, but limped to defeat against associate side Ireland three days later. Mohammad Nabi comes back on to bowl his off breaks for just four singles added.

  168. Ban 72-2 (Mirwais 7-2-17-2)

The Darren Stevens-esque Mirwais Ashraf continues his economical display. He's worked his way through seven overs for very little and claimed the scalps of both Bangladesh openers if you've just joined us. Bangladesh yet to really capitalise on their decision to bat first.

Aftab Alam comes back on to bowl in place of his captain Mohammad Nabi. 197. Ban 23-0 (Ban won toss)

    Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque

Anamul Haque picks up a first boundary with a fine leg glance to the fence as Hamid Hassan strays off his line. Some nice bounce and carry in the rest of the over though from the right-armer.

  198. Ban 19-0 (Tamim 11, Anamul 5)

Shapoor Zadran is in to a third over of this impressive opening spell. The 27-year-old started his cricket career in Peshawar and originally held hopes of playing for Pakistan. Some more facts for you about the headband-wearing Hamid Hassan - he once hit Monty Panesar on his head while acting as an England net bowler at Lord's with the MCC Young Cricketers. No such short stuff here as Tamim drills an over-pitched delivery for another four through the covers.

  201. Ban 13-0 (Tamim 6, Anamul 5)

Some impressive stuff early on from these two Afghanistan bowlers. Shapoor finds some lively bounce to Anamul as one hits the seam and opens up the right-hander. Bit of sloppiness in the field from Afghanistan gives away an overthrow from the final ball of the over.

  203. Ban 10-0 (Tamim 6, Anamul 2)

Hamid Hassan is driven handsomely through the covers by the left-handed Tamim Iqbal for four for the first boundary of the day. There's a huge appeal for caught behind as Tamim swings and misses in a bid to repeat the stroke. Afghanistan think about a review, but take too long and umpire Steve Davis says "time's up". Replays on snicko show they may well have been the faintest of outside edges.

  204. Ban 4-0 (Tamim 0, Anamul 2)

Shapoor Zadran shares the new ball with Hamid Hassan. A tall left-arm seam bowler with hair down to his shoulders runs in to the sound horns and drums beating in the crowd. Word is this match is set to be close to a sell out once everyone gets in. A tidy start with just two runs from the over.

  205. Ban 2-0 (Ban won toss)

Hamid Hassan sports a headband of the national flag's colours as he bustles in right-arm over the wicket. A colleague of ours who once worked for the ICC and has followed Afghanistan's journey closely in recent years tells us his hero is Andrew Flintoff and his favourite film character is Rocky. He starts with a wide before Anamul Haque tucks one of his legs for a single.

So the razzmatazz of the pre-match music and drums is done and Bangladesh openers Anamul Haque and Tamim Iqbal are out in the middle.

They'll be facing Afghanistan fast bowler Hamid Hassan first up from the Cathedral End. Here we go.

  207. Bangladesh - favourites for once

Bangladesh, who have won just eight of the 26 matches they have played in their previous four World Cups, go into the Pool A match against Afghanistan in the uncomfortable position of favourites.

The Tigers caused a major shock by beating Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup, a result that in part persuaded the ICC to elevate them from associate to full membership the following year.

They have continued to cause the occasional upset in World Cups, beating India and South Africa in 2007 and England in 2011.

Bangladesh also have the world's top all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in their ranks.

The 27-year-old is number one on the ICC's all-rounder rankings in all three formats of the game.

  208. Previous meeting

Plenty of passion shown by both teams with those anthems and we're almost ready to go.

Afghanistan v Bangladesh might not have the allure of a Pakistan v India World Cup encounter, but the Afghan team's rise from Division Five of the World Cricket League in 2008 to 12th in the world rankings in 2015 is a cricketing "Roy of the Rovers" story.

They beat Bangladesh by 32 runs in their only previous meeting in the Asia Cup in March 2014.

  220. An incredible journey

If Hollywood ever decides to film a sequel to Cool Runnings, it could do worse than buy up the rights to the Afghanistan cricket story.

The incredible tale of the rise of cricket in Afghanistan has already been told in a 2010 documentary film, "Out of the Ashes", but the feel-good fairytale deserves the Disney treatment given to the Jamaican bobsleigh team and their path to the 1988 Winter Olympics in Canada.

Afghanistan's national cricket federation was only established in 1995, but the team has thrived despite war and internal political strife over the past 20 years. Cricket survived in Afghanistan in part because it was the only sport supported by both the Taliban and their political opponents.

This morning, an Afghanistan team that includes a number of players who grew up in refugee camps in Pakistan will make their debut in the World Cup.
