  1. SL 56-4 (run-rate 4.00)published at 03:21 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

That last wicket for Hassan was his 50th, in his 26th match, and he is the sixth fastest to reach that landmark in ODI history. The big man is down on his haunches, clutching his left ankle. Here's a novel solution, he calls on Shapoor to swap boots. So poor old Shapoor gets the troublesome one. There is no magic in this one, he produces a waist high full toss off a shortened run-up and it is called a no-ball. Boots returned to their original respective owners.

  2. SL 52-4 (Jayawardene 21, Mathews 0)published at 03:15 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

When have we ever seen Sangakkara and now Jayawardene take suicidal runs in the same innings? Mathews is barely in the picture as the throw comes in, he would have been out by a yard but the ball bounces over the timbers. The Afghans were 53-2 at the same stage.

"It bobbled but it stuck and Hassan has a second wicket. The pressure is mounting on Sri Lanka and the old pros Jayawardene and Mathews will have to play exceptionally well to get Sri Lanka out of this hole."

Hassan has done it again. This is fantastic. He is emerging as one of the stars of the tournament here. Another dramatic celebration, he put his palms on the wicket and then on on knee spreads his arms wide, reminiscent of Freddie Flintoff in the 2005 Ashes. Karunaratne appeared in control of the shot, but merely steered it to wide slip, where Mangal juggled with it but held on to his left. Sensational stuff.

  6. SL 42-3 (target 233)published at 03:09 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The sun is out now and the weather is set fair but still stormy waters for the Sri Lankans to negotiate. Ashraf is the new bowler and he is unfortunate to concede a boundary when a thick edge from Karunaratne goes past the solitary slip and away for four.

  7. SL 35-3 (Hassan 1-10 from 3)published at 03:05 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Big Hamid Hassan is already up at 144k's, which in excess of 89mph, and that headband and face paint probably adds to the intimidation. He took 5-45 against UAE in December and has 49 wickets in his 26 ODIs, including two against Bangladesh in the previous match. Jayawardene clips him for two, but imagine if he went now. Just three fours in those opening 10 powerplay overs.

  8. SL 32-3 (target 233)published at 03:00 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Dawlat Zadran continues, keeping it tight at a good pace. He has a best of 3-41 against Scotland last month and he only concedes a single to Jayawardene in this over. His opening five overs have yielded 1-15.

"Hassan looks the part. He's a terrific sight with his headband and the force is with him at the moment. He's bowling superbly and looks like a potential Test bowler. Neither of these bowlers are dibbly-dobbly bowlers."

  10. SL 31-3 (run-rate 3.87)published at 02:55 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Sri Lanka chairman of selectors Sanath Jayasuriya does not look quite as relaxed as he did when we last saw him. In contrast Agfhan coach Andy Moles is all smiles in his team tracksuit top. What a delivery from the fearsome headbanded Hassan, bowling around the wicket in excess of 142km/h. He is getting the ball to move away from the left-hander. No edge but only one single in the over.

  12. SL 30-3 (target 233)published at 02:51 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

The great Jayawardene has played a few key innings during his 443 ODIs but he is going to need another one here to avert his team's most ignominious defeat. Still two slips in place and the little man, with a sleeveless sweater to keep out the cold, gets off the mark by clipping Dawlat Zadran off his pads for two, followed by a neat leg glance to the fine-leg boundary.

"The excitement from the Afghanistan players is amazing. Hassan did a full somersault, waved at the crowd and was surrounded by his team-mates.

"The problem for Sri Lanka is to get a partnership going before they even think about the run rate. They need to be patient."

Is it Rambo? No it's Hamid Hassan. Afghan headband and the flag in face paint on either cheek. Oh my goodness he's got Sangakkara out, bowled between bat and pad as he went back. A jubilant cartwheel from the bowler. Sri Lanka have lost two of their big guns. Three down and 215 short of their target. What a story we have developing here at the University Oval.

  15. SL 17-2 (run-rate 3.40)published at 02:40 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Two slips in place for Dawlat Zadran, with a neat short back and sides haircut and a gold chain jangling outside his shirt. Karunaratne clips three off his pads but 233 seems rather distant at this stage.

  16. Reprieve for Sangakkarapublished at 02:36 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Oh this is extraordinary. A player of Sangakkara's experience completely rattled. Never a run there as he pushed off the back foot, the ball had barely left the cut strip, all manner of confusion and the batsmen end up in mid-pitch together. The fielder could almost have run with the ball and knocked the bails off to run Sangakkara out but chose an underarm throw and missed the target. What a reprieve! As if to compound the issue the next ball goes for four. Is that the key moment?

  17. SL 6-2 (target 233)published at 02:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Just a single for each batsman in the Dawlat Zadran over. Conditions overcast and cool. Sweater weather. Jubilant Afghans in the crowd in their colourful attire, no sweaters there. It's all set up for another fabulous encounter.

James Bamford:, external So we're going to win the rest of the games easily are we...? Afghanistan have got Sri Lanka 2-2!

JK:, external What is happening? Sri Lanka must really want the "Worst performance of the tournament" award off England and they've started well!

  19. SL 4-2 (run-rate 2.00)published at 02:28 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

Shapoor Zadran is a tall, powerfully built left-arm seamer and it was his extra bounce that accounted for Dilshan. Left-hander Dimuth Karunaratne is the new man, coming in ahead of the maestro Mahela Jayawardene.
