India celebrate their win against South Africa

And that is that for another action-packed day at the Cricket World Cup.

Wins for both Sri Lanka and India in their respective groups have thrown up some more magnificent performances from the game's big names.

Don't forget - the action down under continues as soon as this evening. It's the Battle of Britain from 21:30 GMT.

England against Scotland from Christchurch in Pool A. You definitely don't want to miss that.

Thanks for all your contributions and see you again soon.

  2. Read all about it

    Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan led the way with a superb 137 as made 307-7 from their 50 overs.

The bowlers and the fielders then put in an almost faultless shift for their captain and South Africa surprisingly surrendered for 177 in just over 40 overs to give India the win by 130 runs.

    Read our report right here.

    Barry Richards

Ex-South Africa batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Don't discount South Africa, I think they'll still come good in this tournament. The fifth bowler is a worry and if Miller doesn't come good, there's quite a long tail. But, India against Australia could be a mouth-watering encounter on the evidence both of those sides have shown so far."

  4. Captain's view

More from India captain MS Dhoni: "A couple of run outs made things even more impressive. Once the batsmen took us on and we got them in the field with some great work, that was the real turning point.

"After two games, we've shown we're able to execute our plans well. There's an improvement in each and every game."

  5. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"India look like the team from this group who can go on and challenge New Zealand and Australia. Shikhar Dhawan was magnificent but so was Ajinkya Rahane - he's a small man in stature but he just smashed it."

  6. Captain's view

    MS Dhoni and Shikhar Dhawan

India captain MS Dhoni: "I think it's more than just the result that pleases me today. It was a back-to-back good performance from both the bowling and batting unit, which is why we can enjoy it.

"South Africa are such a good side, so I think that makes it an even more satisfying win. I felt the bowlers bowled well, the right areas, the spinners varied their pace and that was some of the reason for our success."

  7. Captain's view

    AB De Villiers

South Africa captain AB de Villiers: "The run-outs cost us dearly, coming just when we got started with the bat in hand. That's where we lost the game. The bowlers fought back well because we were staring at 350. It was a 270-280 par wicket although to restrict India to 307 was a good effort.

"It was not a good enough performance as a batting unit and now we have to regroup. The wicket didn't change, but I still think it was a good toss to win. You can put pressure on the fielding team if you have them out there in the afternoon heat.

"Playing six batsmen actually ended up being a good decision because we lost Vernon Philander to injury. If I didn't have Wayne Parnell, I might have had to bowl myself."

    India fans at the MCG

MCG has erupted with Vande Matram (the national song of India) and Chak De India (Go India!) slogans in the air! And there's no age barrier for cricket fans who came and enjoyed the match.

  9. Post update

    Barry Richards

Ex-South Africa batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"The two things that always worry me about India cricket are running between the wickets and their ability to defend a target up front with their opening bowlers. They've dispelled both of those myths tonight. I thought their running was exceptional and their out-fielding incredible."

  10. Man of the match

    Shikhar Dhawan reaches 100

India's Shikhar Dhawan, who hit 137 runs off 146 balls: "It was very important to score a century, it's a great feeling. More than that, it was important that we put on big partnerships for the team. We lost an early wicket today but we just wanted to stay there and respect the good balls and cash in on the bad deliveries. I knew I could pick up the run-rate, I was relaxed."

  11. India win by 130 runs

Well, that was not what I was expecting to see at the halfway stage.

Yet another side fails to chase down a target at this World Cup and by our calculations, only five teams have won batting second in the first 13 matches.

Stay with us, we'll have the reaction from the man of the match and both captains to come shortly.

  12. Post update

    Kalika Mehta

    BBC Sport in Melbourne

"The crowd erupts both in jubilation and slight disbelief - at India's immense bowling display - as the boys in blue complete a day of domination.

"The colourful celebrations, which are a mixture of singing, dancing, chanting and cheering have spilled out of the MCG and onto Batman Avenue and are likely to go on well into early hours in Melbourne.

"86, 876 people watched the dominant display and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to believe at least 85.000 of those were Indian supporters. They came expecting an India victory, as they always do, and their side did not disappoint them. Led by Shikhar Dhawan and Ravi Ashwin, India showed that they won't be letting the World Cup trophy go easily."

  13. Post update

    Gerard Whateley

    BBC Test Match Special

"India have laid down a marker and it's been a supremely underwhelming performance by one of the pre-tournament favourites South Africa."

  14. India win by 130 runs

Imran Tahir lbw b Raina 8 (SA 177)

    India celebrate

And that is that. Imran Tahir prods forward to Suresh Raina and he is right in front of all three stumps. No hesitation from Aleem Dar who raises the finger. The last seven South Africa wickets have fallen for just 44 runs and India have won by 130 runs at the MCG.

Prashant Srivastava: India really playing like the defending champions. Ruthless display.

  16. SA 175-9 (Ashwin 10-0-41-3)

More boundary joy for Parnell late-on as he flashes outside off to a full ball from Ashwin and gets a thick edge down to third man for four.

  17. Post update

    Barry Richards

Ex-South Africa batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"There's a lot of talk about Wayne Parnell in South Africa and whether he can produce in the big games. There was no X-Factor today. He went for nine an over - that's a pummelling. Jacques Kallis has left a big hole in this team."

  18. SA 170-9 (Shami 8-1-30-2)

Parnell clobbers a pull shot for four off Shami, but there's hardly a flicker of emotion on his face as you sense this has little time left to run its course.

  19. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Ozayr Colossus: India's bowling and fielding has matched their batting thus far - we're not accustomed to this.

Parm Bilkhu: South Africa appear to have a very long tail. They will need to sort that if they want to win this World Cup.

  20. SA 162-9 (Ashwin 9-0-36-3)

Imran Tahir brings up the rear of this South Africa reply. Ashwin has three wickets to his name and in double quick time too. Easy to forget we've actually been in the batting powerplay for the last three overs. It might not last its full five.

  21. WICKET

    Morkel b Ashwin 2 (SA 161-9)

Start the car. Morne Morkel takes a huge hack at a floaty ball from Ashwin. He swings, he misses, the stumps flash once again and another man in green and yellow makes his way off the park.

  22. Post update

    Jonathan Agnew

    BBC Test Match Special

"I wouldn't mind seeing a speed gun on Mohammed Shami, he's steaming in and getting good bounce against Morne Morkel who is a very tall man."

Shami's fastest ball today was registered at 89.3mph

  23. SA 161-8 (Shami 7-1-22-2)

Mohammed Shami's fully justified his selection today and has a couple of wickets to his name plus a catch. Morne Morkel's the latest man in as South Africa look to restore some pride.

  24. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Amod: Indian fielding today reminds me of the South Africa of the 90s, the way South Africa are batting reminds me of India from 90s.

  25. WICKET

    Steyn c Dhawan b Shami 1 (SA 158-8)

    Steyn walks off

And they're up on their feet once again as Dale Steyn is the latest South Africa batsman to come and go. Banged in short outside off by Shami and Steyn cuts it straight to the waiting Shikhar Dhawan at cover point.

  26. 'The end is nigh'

    Kalika Mehta

    BBC Sport in Melbourne

"The crowd are on their feet and can sense the end is nigh as fans' favourite Ashwin's over accounts for two more South African wickets. The dhol's are beating along to sound of cheers and whistles."

    MCG
  27. SA 157-7 (Ashwin 8-0-35-2)

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith is among those despondent supporters I just mentioned. Wonder what difference he might have made today if he'd still been playing. Just the one off another tidy over from Ashwin.

  28. Post update

    Harsha Bhogle

    BBC Test Match Special

"There was quite a bit riding on this game if you consider that whoever wins is likely to finish top of the group. They will then avoid having to face Australia or New Zealand... and play England. Or possibly Bangladesh or Afghanistan!"

  29. SA 156-7 (Req rate 10.13)

Suresh Raina comes on as the sixth different bowler for India. Dale Steyn is out in the middle to join Parnell. There's some glum looking faces in the crowd among the South African contingent as they know what's coming.

  30. WICKET

    Philander lbw b Ashwin 0 (SA 153-7)

Wayne Parnell watches as India's Ravichandran Ashwin celebrates dismissing South Africa's Vernon Philander

Two gone in an over. Vernon Philander's stay at the crease lasts just two balls. Ashwin flights one up that turns back to the right-hander and traps him on the back foot in front of the timbers. Umpire Richard Kettleborough gives him out and there's an immediate call for a review. DRS shows it was hitting the top of middle and off on umpire's call. Could be an early finish at "The G".

  31. WICKET

Miller run out 21 (SA 153-6)

Miller watches as he is run out

More fantastic fielding from India and this is quickly derailing for South Africa. Miller sweeps down to the man who has to chase from deep square leg. A fantastic throw in from Umesh Yadav as they sprint back for two and once again MS Dhoni shows great awareness to guide the ball on to the stumps. Miller is inches short despite the huge dive.

  32. Join the debate at #bbccricket

Kishin Mahtani: South Africa now need to score as many as possible as Net Run Rate is going to be critical to decide who goes to the next round.

DrHolmes: Unlike other teams, SA are not just about a couple of players. We all know they can counter punch. This one's going down the wire.

Robin Gelder: Never seen India field so well.

  33. Drinks break

SA 151-5 (Need 157 more to win off 102 balls)

Shami works his way through another neat over. The boundaries have dried up for South Africa and the last five overs have gone by at 18-2. India doing a cracking job here of squeezing the opposition, very much in the same way they did to Pakistan at Adelaide. On comes the fastest drinks cart in Melbourne for another refreshment break.

  34. Close!

    SA 150-5

Parnell backs away and squirts the ball out to the point fence. They scamper back for two as the throw comes in and Miller has to get a full-length dive out to get home. Shami breaks the bails, but the replays show Miller is home just in time.

  35. Post update

    Harsha Bhogle

    BBC Test Match Special

"There's a three-week waiting list for an Australian visa in India because of the thousands of people wanting to come to this tournament."

  36. SA 148-5 (Req rate 8.69)

Looks like that dismissal of Duminy also came off his body as well as his bat on the way through to slip. Wayne Parnell is the new man in, he's had a chastening day with the ball so far, but does have the ability to hit a long ball.

  37. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"If the reverse-sweep comes off you're a hero, if not you're zero. The Indian supporters are going mad - whoever sold India flags outside the MCG today has just gone and bought a Bentley."

  38. WICKET

    Duminy c Raina b Ashwin 6 (SA 147-5)

And that could well be that. JP Duminy attempts a reverse sweep from Ashwin and a leading edge loops up to slip for the simplest of catches for Suresh Raina. A sea of blue goes wild at the MCG once again.

  39. How's stat?!

    Andrew Samson

    BBC Test Match Special statistician

AB de Villiers reacts as he is run out

"Today was the seventh time that De Villiers and Du Plessis have been involved in a run-out while batting together, which equals the South Africa record for most run-outs by a pair in ODIs with Hansie Cronje/Jacques Kallis and Gary Kirsten/Jacques Kallis."

  40. SA 147-4 (Miller 21, Duminy 6)

Thanks Justin, you pass the baton to me at a time when you sense South Africa need a big performance from one or two of their number. As you say, break it down to the last 20 overs as a run chase and it doesn't sound unrealistic. Mohit Sharma keeps up his steady display and he's well backed up by his fielders with light blue shirts diving left and right to keep South Africa in check.

  41. Post update

    Graeme Swann

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It's been a tricky wicket, especially for the South Africans who have struggled to find their timing. David Miller strikes the ball so cleanly though, that if he gets it through the infield it will go for a boundary."

  42. Scorecard update

    South Africa 142-4 (30 overs)

    Batsmen: Miller 20*, Duminy 2*

    Fall of wickets: 12-1 (De Kock 7) 40-2 (Amla 22), 108-3 (De Villiers 30), 133-4 (Du Plessis 55)

    Bowling figures: Yadav 6-0-34-0, Shami 5-1-15-1, M Sharma 6-0-26-2, Jadeja 8-0-35-0, Ashwin 5-0-31-0

  43. Post update

    SA 142-4 (target 308)

Miller sweeps the first ball of Ashwin's over for four, and the batsmen accumulate steadily off the remainder of it. It's now a Twenty20 game - 166 needed off 20 overs. Hold on to your hats as Adam Williams takes the mic.

  44. Post update

    Neil Manthorp

    BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa need a big, big partnership now. They can't afford to leave it to their lower order. Vernon Philander is injured for starters."

  45. SA 134-4 (Mohit 6-0-26-2)

So JP Duminy joins Miller at the crease. These two both hit centuries in putting on a record unbroken 256 in South Africa's win over Zimbabwe. They only need 175 this time. In fewer than 22 overs. A superb over from Mohit, spoiled only by a wide.

  46. Post update

    Neil Manthorp

    BBC Test Match Special

"It looked like a good shot initially, it made a gun-shot type noise as it flew towards Shikhar Dhawan, but it just came off the splice in the end. South Africa are in trouble now."

  47. WICKET

    Du Plessis c Dhawan b M Sharma 55 (SA 133-4)

Faf du Plessis hits a shot

A wicket for MS Dhoni! The skipper can take the credit for that one. He brings Mohit Sharma back into the attack and Du Plessis - advancing down the track - drills his first ball straight to mid-off, where Shikhar Dhawan takes the catch above his head. The Indian fielders go wild. Dhoni allows a sheepish grin to cross his face. Advantage India.

  48. SA 133-3 (target 308)

The spin twins are whirling away with good effect - Ashwin restricts Miller and Du Plessis to a single apiece. At this stage India were 138-2. Just a thought...

  49. Post update

    David Hussey

Former Australia batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"It's a nice start from Du Plessis, but he's got to go big if South Africa are to win. He needs to get 140 or 150."

  50. SA 131-3 (Jadjea 8-0-35-0)

Miller looks like he might be the man to spearhead this South Africa pursuit, which would be a record in an ODI at the MCG. However, with an escalating run rate comes the need to take chances - and the left-hander sees a sweep narrowly evade the diving Mohit at deep mid-wicket. Still, a four's a four.

  51. 'My ear drums have burst'

    Kalika Mehta

    BBC Sport in Melbourne

AB de Villiers tosses his bat as he walks back after his dismissal

"I do believe my eardrums have just burst! An almighty roar that greeted Mohit Sharma's accurate throw that ran out AB de Villiers and sent a soundly sleeping baby into a state on panic.

"The crowd know just how vital a wicket that was to pick-up if India are going to go and win this match and the shouts of 'India Zindabad' are growing ever louder. The flags are flying high once again as the MCG finally starts to cool from the intense heat during the day."

  52. SA 121-3 (target 308)

The pressure builds. The noise grows. Are the South African nerves starting to fray? Du Plessis survives an appeal for a bat-pad catch that is slightly stronger than half-hearted. No boundaries from the past four overs.

  53. SA 115-3 (target 308)

Faf du Plessis plays a sweep shot as India"s wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni looks on

India tighten the tourniquet - and India captain MS Dhoni is a master of it. Jadeja rattles through another economical over and South Africa's task now reads: 193 needed off 25 overs.

Thanks for introducing the new man, Barry. We should work together more often. For those who don't know, this is the David Miler who smashed 138 not out off 92 balls in South Africa's win over Zimbabwe in their World Cup opener. Five singles off that Ashwin over.

  56. Post update

    Barry Richards

Ex-South Africa batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"AB was backing the fact there would be no direct hit, but it was a magnificent throw from the deep. David Miller scored a great century against Zimbabwe, but how does he handle an occasion like this?"

  57. WICKET

De Villiers run out 29 (SA 107-3)

South Africa's captain AB de Villiers

Quick he may be, but De Villiers is not rapid enough. He is run out by a superb throw from Mohit Sharma from deep point as he chased a second run. The fielder made good ground to his left, the release was quick, the throw was flat and within inches of the stumps. Wicketkeeper MS Dhoni sealed the deal.

    Scorecard

  58. It's a record!

    Kalika Mehta

    BBC Sport in Melbourne

"The crowd registered at 116 decibels during the break as it set a first-world world record for a decibel count at a World Cup cricket match. If the count had been taken while Shikhar Dhawan was sending the ball over the rope, there's no doubt it would have been quite a few notches higher.

"The crowd have quietened a great deal during South Africa's innings, so much so that the incessant ringing of an alarm was the loudest thing that could be heard in the first 10 overs.

"The odd boundary brings about a smattering of applause from the outnumbered South African fans alongside the DJ's blasts of Katy Perry's biggest hit. However, the loudest cheers are now being reserved for the loss of wickets, close run-outs and bump balls."

  59. SA 107-2 (Du Plessis 44, De Villiers 29)

Ravichandran Ashwin, India's premier spinner, into the attack. He doesn't go for seven an over very often, so you suspect something has to give here. Du Plessis can't pierce the off-side field... so he goes over the top off the back foot. A streaky edge for four as he attempts to repeat the shot completes a profitable over for South Africa.

  60. Post update

    Barry Richards

Ex-South Africa batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"I faced the first ever ball in floodlit cricket during the Packer World Series. It was a no-ball. The lighting wasn't good, so it was hard to pick up the ball. Back then they had eight-ball overs in Australia - as a batsman I loved that. It meant if you got on a roll, you had two extra deliveries."

  61. SA 97-2 (target 308)

Best friends and also the quickest runners in world cricket? I can't think of too many players who are faster between the wickets than De Villiers and Du Plessis. They need that speed as they scamper a couple of tight singles off Yadav. They know they need to get a wriggle on if they are to win this game as the required run rate reaches 7.27 an over.

  62. Scorecard update

  65. SA 84-2 (Du Plessis 30, De Villiers 20)

Du Plessis's default response to being tied down is to give the bowler the charge. Even the pace of Umesh Yadav doesn't cow him as he top-edges an ugly swat over keeper Dhoni's head for four. It might not be pretty but at least he's still there. The partnership is worth 44 off 52 balls.

  68. SA 74-2 (target 308)

The athletic right-arm quick Umesh Yadav glides to the delivery crease, but he serves up a full bunger and Faf Du Plessis smashes the ball straight down the ground. A short one is then top-edged for another boundary. Go hard or go home.

    SA 30-1 (target 308)

Ooh, almost! India almost run Amla out - twice. He sets off in search of a suicidal single to cover, Du Plessis rightly sends him back, Ajinkya Rahane misses with the throw with Amla not even in the frame, and Suresh Raina also misses from within a few feet as he collects the ball backing up the stumps. A comedy of errors.

  89. SA 28-1 (target 308)

The rubber-wristed Amla whips Shami just short of the man at square leg, then has to hurry to make his ground as he takes a single to cover. Du Plessis ends the over with a charge-and-miss at the pace bowler. The pressure builds.

  91. SA 26-1 (Amla 13, Du Plessis 3)

Mohit Sharma replaces Umesh Yadav. With a little skip at the start of his run, he locates Amla's outside edge as the batsman attempts to work to leg - and the ball flies through the recently vacated first slip region. England could learn a lot from South Africa. The Proteas are bowling fast, straight and full. Their fielding is incredibly dynamic too. The tall, rangy Morkel responds with a couple of rippers which beat the outside edge. A gentle single allows Dhawan to return to the non-striker's end for a breather and a little smile as the 100 partnership comes up off 83 balls. Just three needed now. All over?

Left-arm quick Shapoor sends down his final over and rues Thisara Perera's good luck as a wild swish flies past the keeper and to the boundary for a fortuitous four. A half-tracker is then smashed into the leg side but straight to the fielder - good running brings them back for two, then a lofted shot down to third man produces another brace. Ashraf is rather less menacing than Hassan, at around 125k's but he's doing his job. This match remains in the balance and we are going to stay with it for now. It needs a calm head and that will come in the form of my esteemed colleague Mr Marc Higginson.

  235. SL 56-4 (run-rate 4.00)

That last wicket for Hassan was his 50th, in his 26th match, and he is the sixth fastest to reach that landmark in ODI history. The big man is down on his haunches, clutching his left ankle. Here's a novel solution, he calls on Shapoor to swap boots. So poor old Shapoor gets the troublesome one. There is no magic in this one, he produces a waist high full toss off a shortened run-up and it is called a no-ball. Boots returned to their original respective owners.

Hassan has done it again. This is fantastic. He is emerging as one of the stars of the tournament here. Another dramatic celebration, he put his palms on the wicket and then on on knee spreads his arms wide, reminiscent of Freddie Flintoff in the 2005 Ashes. Karunaratne appeared in control of the shot, but merely steered it to wide slip, where Mangal juggled with it but held on to his left. Sensational stuff.

  240. SL 42-3 (target 233)

The sun is out now and the weather is set fair but still stormy waters for the Sri Lankans to negotiate. Ashraf is the new bowler and he is unfortunate to concede a boundary when a thick edge from Karunaratne goes past the solitary slip and away for four.

  241. SL 35-3 (Hassan 1-10 from 3)

Big Hamid Hassan is already up at 144k's, which in excess of 89mph, and that headband and face paint probably adds to the intimidation. Never a run there as he pushed off the back foot, the ball had barely left the cut strip, all manner of confusion and the batsmen end up in mid-pitch together. The fielder could almost have run with the ball and knocked the bails off to run Sangakkara out but chose an underarm throw and missed the target. What a reprieve! As if to compound the issue the next ball goes for four. Is that the key moment?

  250. SL 6-2 (target 233)

Just a single for each batsman in the Dawlat Zadran over. Conditions overcast and cool. Sweater weather. Jubilant Afghans in the crowd in their colourful attire, no sweaters there. It's all set up for another fabulous encounter.

  252. SL 4-2 (run-rate 2.00)

Shapoor Zadran is a tall, powerfully built left-arm seamer and it was his extra bounce that accounted for Dilshan. Left-hander Dimuth Karunaratne is the new man, coming in ahead of the maestro Mahela Jayawardene.

    Dilshan c Zazai b S Zadran 0 (SL 2-2)

    Tillakaratne Dilshan out

Both openers out first ball. Both Sri Lanka openers this is, not Afghanistan. We might have to stay with this match. Although it could be over before India-South Africa begins in a little over an hour.

  254. SL 1-1 (D Zadran 1-1)

No great pace from Dawlat Zadran, with no great leap in delivery, but he is causing all manner of unease with his nagging line and length. Even the great Sangakkara is rattled, and he would have been out when pushing for a quick single had the bowler hit from just off the cut strip. Interesting start to say the least.

  255. WICKET

Well, what about that. They said what happens if Sri Lanka lose a couple of early wickets, well that's as early as you can get. First up, the ball brushed Thirimanne's back pad as he prods forward and umpire Illingworth sends him on his way. No review. It just about pitched on leg-stump and umpire's call was the verdict on the direction.

The Sri Lankan top four have scored 37,618 ODI runs between them so you would imagine they would be capable of getting the bulk of these 233 required for victory between them, although 233 was the figure the team was bowled out for in the opening match against New Zealand.

  258. Post update

"More from Ian Bell - and his thoughts on what went wrong in their thrashing by New Zealand:

"'To go out and play like we did was embarrassing. To have to apologise for the way we played is not acceptable. It's really disappointing, but hopefully in the next four games we have in this group, we can put it right.

"'The talent within the group to put it right is there and there's still a lot of cricket to be played in this World Cup.

"'We have to go back to doing the simple things right. When we do that, we're a dangerous side. 'We certainly can't play like we have in the last two games'."

    Ian Bell

"Ian Bell has been talking to the media ahead of Monday's World Cup match against Scotland in Christchurch. Here's what he said:

"'It's about how we react tomorrow. We have to go and put in a good performance. The result is the most important thing, but we'd like to get that with real clinical cricket, we haven't done that in these two games - we've been well off the pace.

"'It would be nice to put it all together the kind of game we know we can. Even though what's happened has been so bad, it's irrelevant to what happens tomorrow. We have to turn up and play our best cricket'."

  261. How's stat?

-232 is Afghanistan's highest score against a top-eight nation (ie excluding Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and associate nations). Their previous best was 206 v Australia at Sharjah in 2012.

-Afghanistan's innings was the fifth time the top-eight batsmen in the order have all reached double figures in a World Cup innings.

  262. Lunch interval

So we have a 40-minute interval before we see the start of the Sri Lanka reply. At 03:15 GMT we will be crossing to the MCG for news of the toss between India and South Africa and then focusing on that one. We'll keep you posted on this match, however.

"Sri Lanka will be happy with the last 15 overs or so because it could have been a lot worse. Maybe Afghanistan attacked too soon and I think the wicket of Nabi in the powerplay was critical. He looks a good player but went for a big shot and was bowled. Thereafter it was a struggle for them.

"It will be a major upset if Sri Lanka don't win but someone has to go out and make the runs."

  265. WICKET

Zazai c Herath b Malinga 19 (Afg 232 all out)

All over and Malinga, after that 0-84 against the Kiwis and five wicketless overs in this one, finishes with 3-41, figures matched by his captain. Zazai was the last to go, falling in valiant fashion with a mighty swipe, it flew off the top edge and was safely pouched in the deep on the leg-side.

"The batsmen crossed and that's the last thing Afghanistan would have wanted, based on what we've seen in numbers nine and 10. One suspects the number 11 Shapoor Zadran is not a magician with the bat and even if he misses the ball, it might be worth taking the risk and running a bye."

  267. WICKET

    Hassan c Mendis b Mathews 0 (Afg 227-9)

Hassan is caught at deep mid-wicket first ball but no chance for the hat-trick for Mathews, that's the final ball of the penultimate over.

  268. WICKET

    D Zadran b Mathews 4 (Afg 227-8)

    Dawlat Zadran is bowled

Hard to set fields for the old thick edge over the keeper's head. But it's of no great cost to the Sri Lankans as Mathews quickly holds one back to shatter the older Zadran's timbers when he goes for another agricultural heave.

"Ashraf was perfectly entitled to swing the bat at this stage but Afghanistan would like to get up to 240 if they could. It might not be a match-winning score but it always gives you a chance."

  270. WICKET

    Ashraf c Lakmal b Malinga 28 (Afg 221-7)

Useful from Ashraf, couple of sixes in that 32-ball knock, but he succumbs to a slower one from Malinga, caught at deep backward square-leg. I think I would be ok against the Malinga slower ball, I could just about react to it as if it were a normal delivery.

  271. Six

    Afg 216-6 (Ashraf 24, Zazai 12)

Well the debate about modern bats will gain a pace or two with this one. It was a leading edge as Ashraf attempted to turn Lakmal to leg but it sailed straight over the wicketkeeper's head for six.

    Sri Lanka fans

Now that will help. Ashraf top-edges a six over fine-leg, the 91st maximum of the tournament. Some frenetic drums around the ground liven things up too.

  274. Afg 195-6 (Lakmal 2-26 from 9)

Three singles are all that are scored again in this one from Lakmal. How many will they need to make Sri Lanka uncomfortable?

  275. Afg 192-6 (run-rate 4.36)

Perera restricts the scoring to three singles. The Afghans have only passed 300 once, against UAE last year, and we can safely say they are not going to do it here.

  276. Afg 189-6 (Zazai 6, Ashraf 5)

Rather incongruously it's the throbbing strains of Bruce Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark blaring away at the end of this over. Two leg byes off Mathews but it's now 56 balls since the last boundary. From 128-2 it has not really kicked on for the minnows. But they are not expected to win this are they? It's not England.

  277. Afg 183-6 (run-rate 4.35)

Doesn't look like we are going to see an explosive end to the innings. We've had eight overs since the last boundary, which was that six from Zadran. Understandably the Afghans are wary of being skittled out before their overs are completed.

  278. Afg 180-6 (Herath 1-41 from 10)

Herath returns and only concedes a single from his final over. Ashraf is the new man. He averages only 14 in his 30 matches but has made an unbeaten 52 against UAE. How many can the minnows add?

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Afghanistan did a lot of hard work at the start of the innings and until the 35th over it was going well but it now looks a little bleak. The powerplay is causing havoc, partly because Malinga has been brought back and he's dangerous when players try to attack him."

  283. WICKET

    Zadran c Perera b Lakmal 10 (Afg 175-6)

The curse of the batting powerplay. Only six runs so far and two wickets. Zadran clearly likes a big hit but he doesn't get hold of this one and is comfortably taken in the leg-side.

  284. Afg 175-5

Afghan wicketkeeper Zazai is also 21. He's playing his 10th ODI and began his career with successive fifties, against UAE. Just the two singles in the over off Malinga. There's a Batman and Superman walking together around the ground, that's not the correct partnership is it? Oh, I'm told there's a movie coming out featuring both. A lot of films are made in New Zealand so this could be one of the scenes.

"It is an interesting conundrum if you're an associate side, there are two different goals. Do you go for respectability and take 230 which probably won't win you the game, or do you go for broke in the knowledge you might be all out for 200?"

  286. Afg 173-5 (Lakmal 1-20 from 7)

Lakmal, with a Colonel Sanders-style goatee, albeit much darker, appeals for lbw against Zadran but umpire Gaffaney says it is sliding down the leg-side, and there is another appeal for a run-out but square-leg official Illingworth decides there is no need to refer to the tv official for that one. Just the one leg-bye in the over.

  287. WICKET

    Nabi b Malinga 21 (Afg 169-5)

    Mohammad Nabi out

The tinted, tousle-haired Malinga claims his first wicket of the World Cup. It was full, Nabi went for the big shot, made no contact, and the bails are a-flashing. Another good knock, only 27 balls for that 21.

  288. Afg 169-4 (Nabi 21, Zadran 9)

Zadran is only 21, and this is just his 12th ODI. He hit seven fours and six sixes in his 83 from 50 balls against Ireland in Dubai in January so clearly knows how to wield the willow. Some chanting from the Afghan followers, along the lines of "where we come from" but mercifully not as long. A smattering of singles off Perera and we're all set for the batting powerplay. What are we going to see in these next five overs?

  289. Six

    Afg 165-4 (run-rate 4.85)

Dilshan is smarting after copping a full blooded drive on the hand at short extra cover. The new man is left-hander Zadran, who gets off the mark in fine style with a drive on one knee off Herath reminiscent of Yuvraj Singh. It soars many a mile but is not caught by one of the orange t-shirts this time. The third six of the innings.

"They may have decided that 260 to 280 is not a winning score and want to get to 320 but they are not far enough into the innings to play like that and now run the risk of losing too many wickets before the final overs. They need a little bit more patience."

  291. WICKET

    Shenwari c Mathews b Perera 38 (Afg 157-4)

    Mohammad Nabi

Nabi had stepped up the rate with a sweetly struck drive for four and then a mighty crack over mid-wicket for the maximum next ball but his partner is no more. It was well hit too, but it went straight to mid-off, where Mathews was no doubt extremely grateful to get his hands in front of where no man wants to be hit by a cricket ball, particularly one travelling at around 100mph.

  292. Afg 146-3 (Shenwari 38, Nabi 7)

A fiercely struck short-arm jab when Herath offers him a touch of width outside off-stump brings Shenwari his fifth boundary. Not pretty but there are no prizes for aesthetic appeal. Sadly.

  293. Afg 141-3 (Shenwari 34, Nabi 7)

The spin combination is broken as Perera returns, and the only blemish from him is a wide. The Afghans have already comfortably surpassed the 124 they were dismissed for in their only previous meeting with Sri Lanka.

Nabi is in his 47th ODI and he has seven half centuries to his name, with a best of 77 and a useful strike-rate of 90. Only singles as Herath varies his flight skilfully. Wily customers these slow left-armers.

  297. Afg 137-3 (Shenwari 3, Nabi 5)

Stanikzai has made two of the three Afghanistan fifties against one of the top eight nations. The new man is the skipper Mohammad Nabi, who gets off the mark with a boundary when he deftly dabs a Mendis full toss past backward square-leg, where there is nothing deft about Malinga's cumbersome attempt to cut the ball off.

Surely Sri Lanka are not going to be embarrassed by a minnow? Jeevan Mendis is on with his array of leg-breaks. Lasith Malinga

Malinga returns but although the blonde curls are still there he doesn't look the same destructive bowler of old. Stanikzai has already had treatment on his hind quarters and he won't want to play too many of those full blooded swipes at fresh air that nearly knock him off balance. He picks up another boundary though, his fourth four, with a thick edge through the vacant gully region.

  306. Umpire review - not out

    Afg 106-2 (partnership 66)

    Samiullah Shenwari

Sri Lanka review an lbw decision as Herath's quicker ball traps Shenwari on the crease when he tries to turn to leg. The replays show half the ball is hitting leg stump but it is given as umpire's call so the decision from umpire Gaffaney remains and Sri Lanka lose their review.

  308. Afg 100-2 (run rate 4.63)

The fifty stand from 70 balls. An edge to third man brings Shenwari his third boundary, while a rare slip down the leg-side from skipper Mathews results in five wides and brings up the 100. Time for the skipper to tap into the wisdom of former captain Jayawardene.

Herath keeping things relatively tidy around 82km but not looking particularly threatening. This is the fellow who we saw take 5-3 against New Zealand no less in last year's World T20.

  311. Afg 86-2 (Stanikzai 35, Shenwari 14)

    Batsman Asghar Stanikzai

Stanikzai is in sight of his fifth ODI fifty here, he was out for 27 the first time his team played the Sri Lankans. He picks up another boundary with a cut off Perera and his running is admirable, racing off the mark and always looking for more than a single.

  314. Afg 81-2 (run-rate 4.26)

Herath gets through his overs alarmingly quickly from a text commentary point of view, much like one of his predecessors, the great Sanath Jayasuriya, who is in attendance looking very dapper in a steel blue suit and open neck shirt. A couple of singles to either batsmen was what I saw in the blur.

  315. Afg 79-2 (Stanikzai 29, Shenwari 13)

A picture of the Sri Lankan pitch map shows the vast majority of the bowling has been on a good length, with virtually nothing down the leg-side but Stanikzai collects another boundary by shovelling Perera through mid-wicket. The 10th boundary of the innings, nine fours and a six.

  316. Afg 73-2 (Stanikzai 24, Shenwari 12)

Indeed they haven't, Warren. Prior to the 5-2 home win against England late last year (does that count anymore? ooh harsh) they were beaten 5-0 in India. Ian: Key question. Will Afghanistan score more against Sri Lanka than England did against New Zealand?

  329. Ahmadi c Herath b Lakmal 24 (Afg 40-2)

    Rangana Herath

It was a curious stroke from Ahmadi, who had played himself in nicely, he appeared to get a leading edge attempting to flick to leg and it looped tamely to mid-wicket where Herath took a neat catch.

Timely wicket too because it took the cameras away from a character in the crowd dressed in a double-breasted red suit with brass buttons and a matching red beret. What he is doing I have no idea, apart from some dubious dancing, but he seems to like the cameras.

"Mangal hit it like he was giving fielding practice to your eight-year-old daughter. Much relief for Sri Lanka and their captain Mathews but heartache for Mangal. A stand of 34 is not a bad opening partnership by the standards of some matches at this World Cup but that's a wasted opportunity for Afghanistan."

  331. WICKET

    Mangal c Thirimanne b Mathews 10 (Afg 34-0)

The breakthrough arrives and a gentle loosener from skipper Mathews provides it. Perhaps Mangal was deceived by the slow pace but he drives it straight to short extra cover as if giving catching practice. How will the minnows react to the loss of their first wicket?

  332. Afg 34-0 (Ahmadi 22, Mangal 10)

    Javed Ahmadi

Ahmadi aged just 23 looks a cool customer and plays an exemplary off drive to the pickets with a classically high MCC elbow. Four more from the final ball with a flick off the pads. Where are these helpful bowling conditions then?

  333. Moles promises more

    Afghanistan coach Andy Moles

Afghanistan coach Andy Moles may have 'the most dangerous job in sport' but he is determined that it is not going to be the most demoralising. Like Frank Sinatra, he's got high hopes. Here is what he had to say after their opening-game defeat by Bangladesh...

"We genuinely thought we could win the game but just didn't get out of the blocks with the bat," said the former Warwickshire opener. "We were in a fog and before we knew it we were one, two, three down and treading water.

"We do well with bat and ball for 35 overs and it's that extra 15 overs where we need to work on our concentration levels, our discipline and our execution."

  334. Afg 24-0 (run-rate 3.42)

The Sri Lanka opening bowlers conceded 162 runs from 18 overs in the opening defeat against New Zealand last weekend and Malinga concedes his third boundary of this innings when Mangal bisects the cover fielders perfectly.

Favourite World Cup moment so far

Gilad Lipschitz: Brendon McCullum's record-breaking 50 against England. His innings has to be the best at this World Cup.

  336. Dropped catch

    Afg 19-0 (Ahmadi 13, Mangal 6)

Mangal is dropped on four by Mahela Jayawardene, diving to his right at second slip off Lakmal. Playing his 443rd ODI the old boy, a sprightly 37, but he does not add to his 217 catches this time. Sharp chance but we're used to seeing him snaffle those.

    Lasith Malinga

"Lasith Malinga is a more dangerous bowler at the end of the innings than at the start. I wouldn't use him for very long with the new ball. He's much better with the old ball when batsmen are going after him."

  338. Afg 15-0 (Ahmadi 11, Mangal 4)

Ahmadi is away with successive boundaries off Malinga, the first off the edge wide of the slips but the second a fluent square drive. He then keeps out a beautiful slower ball yorker as well that has cleaned many a batsman up over the years. Hint of swing towards the end of the over but nothing of the Tim Southee range.

  339. Afg 4-0 (run-rate 1.0)

He's trying to get those 13 quickly by the looks of things. All manner of attacking intent but he calms down with a beautifully straight drive off Lakmal for two runs through mid-on.

  340. How's stat?

Nawroz Mangal needed 13 runs at the start of play to become the third player to score 1,000 ODI runs for Afghanistan.

  341. Afg 2-0 (Ahmadi 0, Mangal 2)

The temporary stands are fairly sparsely populated at the moment but there is a smattering of Sri Lanka followers who appear to be in good spirits. Malinga, who has 271 ODI wickets from his 179 matches, is still getting into his stride. Mangal pinches a single from the final delivery.

Favourite World Cup moment so far

Thomas DJH Stirk: Ireland's run chase is the standout moment so far. The way they went about chasing 300 was superb.

  343. Line-ups

Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara (wkt), Mahela Jayawardene, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dimuth Karunaratne, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath.

Afghanistan: Afsar Zazai, Javed Ahmadi, Nawroz Mangal, Asghar Stanikzai, Samiullah Shenwari, Mohammad Nabi (capt), Dawlat Zadran, Najibullah Zadran, Mirwais Ashraf, Shapoor Zadran, Hamid Hassan.

  344. Afg 1-0 (Lakmal 0-1)

Three slips in place for rangy seamer Lakmal. It's overcast but no dramatic swing as yet. Mangal gets off the mark with a thick edge to third man for a single. Not sure if Mrs Mangal is here. (one for the older Neighbours fans)

  345. Afg 0-0 (Ahmadi 0, Mangal 0)

    Lasith Malinga

You may think that Malinga would have ripped through the Afghans in that one previous meeting. He didn't. He took 0-23 from five overs. He opens with a maiden. Better than the opening match against the Kiwis when he went for 84 from his 10 and there was not surprisingly no maidens.

"All we need in this tournament is a close game. We haven't really had one yet. I like the fact that the bowlers have a chance if they use the new ball well but also if you have wickets in hand it then becomes a batsman's game."

The Afghan openers are out there in their salmon pink helmets. Both teams in mid-blue kit and the mercurial Lasith Malinga has the ball. Umpires Chris Gaffaney from New Zealand, no relation to Dean, and former England spinner Richard Illingworth, no relation to Raymond. Let's play.

  348. Ashraf staying positive

    Mirwais Ashraf

There is a humility about the way Afghanistan are approaching their task at the World Cup. They are clearly not naive to their standing in the world cricket order. However, it is also clear they are aiming to imprint a little bit of themselves on the tournament.

"We'll be trying to do our best against all full member nations to play positive cricket and have a good fight," said Afghanistan pace bowler Mirwais Ashraf. Everyone loves an underdog, especially when they bite. Could Sri Lanka be in for a shock?

    Afghanistan line up

Very dramatic Afghanistan anthem, reminiscent of a Bond theme. These two have met just the once before, in the Asia Cup in March last year, when Sri Lanka made 253-6 and bowled the Afghans out for 124.

  350. Anthem time

Kumar Sangakkara singing away merrily there. He should know the words by now, this is his 399th ODI. He needs five dismissals to become the first to takes 500 ODI scalps.

"We've seen some remarkable starts to innings in this tournament so there are perils against the new ball - Scotland and Pakistan for example. It's a good pitch but it has a bit of life like the pitch yesterday where Pakistan were 1-4. They have to get through the first 10 overs relatively unscathed."

  353. Post update

The first thing the Afghans need to do is get through the new balls. In that opening match against the Tigers they were 3-3 after three overs.

  354. Afghanistan's debut blues

Afghani bowler Hamid Hassan (centre) in action against Bangladesh

Afghanistan's World Cup debut was spoiled by Bangladesh, who claimed a 105-run victory in Canberra on Wednesday. However, despite the defeat, there were positives for the associate member, mostly in their bowling.

Hamid Hassan, Shapoor Zadran and Mirwais Ashraf did well to limit the Tigers until 15 overs of big hitting took them out of the debutants' range. Whilst the reply began dreadfully, their were glimpses of grit in the Afghan middle order, courtesy of Samiullah Shenwari and Mohammad Nabi. They have an even tougher task on their hands today, though.

  355. SL look to bounce back

    Lasith Malinga

Sri Lanka are a big tournament team, right? They save their best for the big occasions, don't they? That is the usual perception of the 1996 World Cup winners and runners-up for the last two tournaments. However, they didn't exactly show up for their opening game in Christchurch, where they suffered a 98-run defeat to co-hosts New Zealand.

Now there is no shame in losing to New Zealand (although England stretched that theory the limit) but it was their third defeat in a row and showed a huge gulf in class between the sides. Also concerning for them will be the display of opening bowler Lasith Malinga, who has been such a star of past tournaments but lost his radar and was taken for 84 wicketless runs from his 10 overs by the Kiwis. They will be aiming for a very comprehensive win today.

    University Oval, Dunedin

We're back at another beautiful New Zealand ground for this one, the University Oval in Dunedin, scene of that remarkable match between New Zealand and Scotland.

The associate nation batted first in that one of course and were reduced to 12-4 in the fifth over, but it was far from the procession we expected as the Scots mustered 142 and the Kiwis only won by three wickets.

  357. Team news

Both teams make one change, Sri Lanka bringing in all-rounder Thisara Perera for Nuwan Kulasekera Afghanistan have Dawlat Zadran in for Aftab Alam.

  358. Quotes from the captains

Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews: "It has always been a wicket that swings and seams and we need to respect that."

Afghanistan's Mohammad Nabi: "We would have bowled first because it is a bit green but hopefully we will bat well."

  359. Toss

Sri Lanka have won the toss and will bowl first.

Hello again. Well there have been some fireworks in the last couple of games haven't there? Brendon McCullum's fastest World Cup fifty from 18 balls and then yesterday Pakistan making the worst start in World Cup history by slumping to 1-4. Do these feats come in threes? We shall see.

You're very welcome to our coverage of Sri Lanka against Afghanistan. in Pool A.
