"England's most impressive batting display of the tournament, largely thanks to an explosive final 10. It's a target that is within Sri Lanka's reach, but they looked pretty broken as they dragged themselves off."

England's previous totals in the three ODIs that they have played at Wellington Regional Stadium, aka the 'Cake Tin', have been: 89 (2002), 130 (2008), 123 (2015). All three of those games were against New Zealand. Much improved then.

"Some of the bowling really let Sri Lanka down. I know they were under pressure, but those bowlers have been under pressure many times before. It was sloppy and undisciplined."

Ian Bell's 49 got England off to a good start, while Joe Root played a textbook middle-order innings: providing a steadying influence and then going through the gears to score 121 off 108 balls. Jos Buttler weighed in with 39 off 19 at the end.

So, England copped some stick after that mid-innings stall but they've set a decent target for Sri Lanka. They'll have to go some to knock off 310.

  6. Eng 309-6 (Buttler 39, Woakes 9)published at 01:46 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Jos Buttler creams Dilshan down the ground for two - just about - and belts the final ball of the innings over cow corner for four. That's England done and dusted on 309-6. Good stuff that.

"Lakmal has bowled some absolute tripe. I don't what Mathews is saying, but if my mother was captain she'd be very unhappy."

  8. Eng 303-6published at 01:45 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

What a hit! Jos Buttler flat-bats a full delivery over extra cover for six, MS Dhoni-style. That's England past the magical 40-point, I mean 300-mark. Suranga Lakmal responds with a beamer and, since this is his second warning, he is pulled out of the attack by the umpires.

  9. Eng 296-6published at 01:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Suranga Lakmal's waist-high full toss begins the final over and Jos Buttler hits it for four. The free hit is smeared down the ground for another boundary.

  10. Eng 287-6 (Buttler 19, Woakes 9)published at 01:39 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Jos Buttler does a good job of keeping the ball on the floor during his boundary-laden denouement to an innings. He drives another single down the ground, but Chris Woakes struggles to get off strike - scampering through for a single to get Buttler on at the spinner Herath.

The England keeper wallops the next delivery at waist-height and Herath tries to take the catch but gets injured in doing so and the ball drops to the turf. That was hit with real venom. Perera finishes the over, his single delivery being clobbered for four by Woakes.

"I think this could be a winning total. Sri Lanka will have to play exceptionally well to win."

  12. Eng 279-6 (Malinga 10-0-63-1)published at 01:34 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Jos Buttler's cover drive is so precise - he splits two fielders in the outfield with a perfectly-judged boundary off Lasith Malinga. A couple of singles, then Buttler repeats the trick with another push for four through the off side.

Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford raises his finger as though he's drawing his gun in a Western. It's all very slow and deliberate. He was spot on with that Joe Root decision. Chris Woakes is the new batsman to the crease.

"It was a superb knock - the way he paced himself and picked the gaps, it was a treat to watch. England badly needed that."

  16. WICKETpublished at 01:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

A wonderful 108-ball knock comes to an end. Replays show the ball was only just clipping leg, but enough to stick with the umpire's original decision. The cake tin rises to applaud a marvellous innings.

  17. Umpire reviewpublished at 01:26 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Joe Root is hit in front after missing with a reverse-sweep shot to Rangana Herath. He's given out, but reviews it. Looks plumb to me.

  18. Eng 264-5 (Root 121, Buttler 5)published at 01:24 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Jos Buttler takes his time to compose himself and check the safety of his helmet. Wise. He's fine now, underlined by him spinning on a short ball and directing it to the backward square boundary. He then drills a yorker for a single.

Send for the Buttler. Jos is greeted to the crease by a Lasith Malinga bouncer which rattles into the batsman's helmet. Send for the physio!
