Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said: "It was really tough because it was a make or break game for us. You can't believe how happy we are because we were out of the tournament if we'd lost this game.

"The pitch wasn't easy. It was a bit two-paced and it was really difficult to rotate the strike. I felt 250-260 would be really challenging today. We were 15-20 runs short but we showed the kind of quality we have in the bowling line-up and credit should be given to the fast bowlers.

"We need to really work hard because we need to improve our batting. All the teams are getting to 280, 290, or 300, so we need to start well and capitalise."

Ilyas Najib: That was a tense game, it's exactly what Pakistan needed, they thrive on confidence and expect them to go on a run now.

Tadius Zuze: Winners lose in style, well done Zimbabwe.

So this is how they stand in Pool B after today's match. Next up for Pakistan is the United Arab Emirates, who they play on Wednesday, before Zimbabwe take on Ireland on Saturday.

  5. Player reactionpublished at 11:51 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura, who batted despite suffering a leg injury sustained while fielding said: "I have to have another scan tomorrow morning, so I will know how bad it is then.

"Today our bowling performance was much better, we executed well but we gave away too many extras. But there was a big improvement from the last game.

"It is always disappointing to lose a game like this when you feel you have a chance to win. We have to learn from that and hopefully we can learn from these experiences. Our weakness has been that we have not had one guy scoring a hundred or batting through the innings."

  7. Player of the matchpublished at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Pakistan's Wahab Riaz, the player of the match, says: "When I went into bat, the discussion was to play all 50 overs and if we had to take chances we would do so in the last three or four overs.

"The whole team really worked hard and believed in me and my batting. At the start I was not enjoying it, the ball was not coming onto the bat. But it was a team effort and in the end we won. We always expected to take wickets as soon as possible."

"This has been a very impressive effort from Pakistan. When chasing a small total, heads can go down and it would have been very easy to think about going home. But they have bowled well and shown some good fight tonight, which will stand them in good stead going into their next few games.

"Zimbabwe will kick themselves. They only had 236 to chase but they weren't up to the task."

Pakistan win for the first time in the 2015 World Cup, while Zimbabwe suffer their third defeat in four games.

  11. WICKETpublished at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

And that is it. It is all over. Pakistan crawled along to 33-2 after 15 overs when batting, but they still ended up celebrating their first win. Chigumbura is the last man out. It has been a heroic effort from him, while carrying an injury, but his team fall short. Chigumbura top-edges it and is caught behind by Akmal.

  12. WICKETpublished at 11:35 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

All Pakistan have to do is bowl it straight and legal and they will win. Panyangara is run out in his desperate attempt for a single.

Dropped catch off the second ball of the over. Zimbabwe get three. Chigumbura skies it and should be out at deep midwicket, but it falls through Nasir Jamshed's fingers.

"Irfan is taking high fives from his team-mates. This wicket has been tailor-made for him and he has been superb. He is a thinking bowler, because he mixed in a couple of bouncers and slower balls."

  15. Zim 212-8 (target 236)published at 11:32 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

The dangerous Mohammad Irfan comes back in to the attack for Pakistan. The bounce from his first ball deceives Panyangara, who can't then connect with the second ball.

He is a big lad, and charges down the wicket rather ungraciously for the third ball. And misses it, but a single comes from the fourth ball. Chigumbura gets two off the fifth delivery and then takes the single so he will be on strike for the last over.

Zimbabwe need 24 off six balls.

  16. Zim 208-8 (target 236)published at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Chigumbura takes a single off the first ball of the over, but that brings the lesser batsman Panyangara back on strike. He swings wildly, connects and gets the required single.

From the third ball of the over, Chigumbura swings and misses. And then does the same again from the fourth. But wait, he finally connects and slashes it for four between extra cover and mid off.

28 off 12 balls and Panyangara is on strike at the start of the 49th over. It looks all over.

  17. Zim 202-8 (target 236)published at 11:21 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Six dot balls from Shahid Afridi's last over. Panyangara cannot get bat on to ball. A maiden for Afridi on his 35th birthday. There's his present after what has been a tough day for him. 34 off 18 balls needed.

A great shot from Elton Chigumbura. He bashes it straight and powerfully past the bowler for a one-bounce four. Imagine what he could do if he was fully fit. That helps bring up the 200. But there is still a long way to go. Zimbabwe need at least one huge over. 34 runs from 24 balls.

  20. Zim 195-8 (target 236)published at 11:13 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

It is a fantastic effort from Zimbabwe. But will it be enough? Chigumbura lofts a much-needed four past deep midwicket. The scenario, 41 needed, 30 balls to do it in.
