What will frustrate England is that it's the change bowlers who have done for them after that fine start - Dilshan and Mathews applying the brake and then enticing the wickets. And they could have another one back in the hutch - Root plays a tentative push at Mathews with an open face and Mahela Jayawardene, normally a reliable gobbler of chances at slip, grasses a low chance.

Charles Isere:, external England selectors so pig-headed, they're about to ruin the Test career of a good batsmen. This is a ODI, use ODI batsmen.

Henry Ellison:, external Good one England selectors. There's a difference between keeping faith and being stubborn. Ballance is an example of the latter.

Joe Root, as good a man for a crisis as anyone in the England dugout, is the new man. He's off the mark with a nudge into the leg side.

"Gary Ballance was just pushing with hard hands, trying to manoeuvre the ball into the off side. It didn't come on enough. Ballance was a forlorn and manical sight... he's finding it awfully difficult to get under way. Pace off the ball is working well for Sri Lanka."

Gary Ballance's nightmarish tournament continues, and England's runaway train has well and truly come off the rails. Ballance tries to work Dilshan into the off-side but gets a leading edge and pops up a return catch which the evergreen Dilshan pockets athletically. Tame.

  7. Eng 70-1 (Bell 37, Ballance 6)published at 22:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2015

Gary Ballance is only averaging nine in his last five ODI innings, and he looks a little nervy, with just one run from his first 10 balls. That'll settle his nerves, though - Mathews overpitches and Ballance eases him through extra-cover for four. Nice stroke.

"All of a sudden, the pocket of Sri Lanka fans that have turned one area of the stadium blue are alive. Whistles blown, flags waved, a right old knees up. Now the pressure is on Gary Ballance, a result of that loose stroke from Moeen."

  9. Eng 64-1published at 22:51 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2015

Sri Lanka, cunning old pros that they are, have dried up the runs expertly here. Dilshan continues, and Ballance, after seven scoreless balls, can only fiddle a single wide of cover. Just three runs from the last three overs - the squeeze being applied here.

Ian: Poor dismissal for Moeen. Poor and lazy shot.

Gary Ballance is the new man, with plenty of question marks hanging over his place. He begins cautiously, playing out four dot balls to the rest of Mathews' over.

"The game has changed a little bit. Sri Lanka have taken the pace off the ball and Moeen Ali has not been as fluent as we thought he would. He just lobbed it to Lakmal."

  14. WICKETpublished at 22:44 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2015

Too well. It was going too well for England. The inevitable setback arrives, and it's Moeen who goes, to a needless, horrible dismissal. He plays a lazy drive in the air and hits it straight into the hands of Suranga Lakmal at mid-off.

It's all been going so well for England, and understandably Angelo Mathews opts to take some pace off the ball and introduce spin into the attack. It's the wily old Dilshan who's been handed the nut and he shuts off the floodgates immediately, keeping England to just a single from his first over.

The contrast between Ian Bell's scratchy-as-an-old-sweater innings against Scotland and this knock is remarkable. He moves on to 35 with another silky boundary, punching Mathews effortlessly through the covers. He's in trouble next ball though, when Mathews gets one to jag back and it beats batsman and keeper on its way to the fine leg boundary. Runs flowing for England.

  19. Eng 51-0published at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2015

It's been a rapid start by England, but it's not been characterised by the cross-bat brutality of McCullum, Gayle et al. They're scoring their runs with classical cricket shots, timing the ball sweetly rather than trying to hit the cover off it. Ian Bell continues his nice start by clipping Malinga off his legs wide of mid-on for another four.
