Richard Tatham:, external Am prepared to sell wife, kidney and underpants for an Irish victory. Not the pet, obviously; I will need company in the dog house.

"Ireland will be chasing in excess of 300. Amla and Du Plessis have tucked into this Irish bowling. It has been an onslaught and they're taking singles at will."

  6. SA 163-1 (Amla 87, Du Plessis 68)published at 05:16 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Andrew McBrine steps up, seeing if he can stop the opponents. He can't. Du Plessis sweeps one over square leg for four, before another four singles. In boxing terms, Ireland are on the ropes, taking a battering. There will be no one jumping in to stop it though.

"It looks to me like Amla has deciding everything has got to go. He's such an elegant player to watch and such an example for anyone watching on how to bat."

  10. Sa 152-1 (Amla 83, Du Plessis 61)published at 05:10 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Just on cue, Amla has had enough of threes and fours from the over. He launches successive sixes. The first one a slog over long-on, a second one over cover soon follows.

Amla then blasts a four and adds a single. Du Plessis, feeling left out, launches Max Sorensen for a six of his own. The highest scoring over of the match - 23 off it, including three sixes. Marvellous to watch for a neutral. Painful if you're Irish.

The team winning the toss have won all matches at Canberra in the World Cup so far. Well, we might as well all go back to bed then.

But records have to end at some time. Can today be that day?

South Africa won the toss here, and are dominating. Four off the over, but a cricketing storm is coming. Not to be confused with an actual storm. The weather is fine.

  13. SA 124-1published at 05:03 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

The partnership is already 112 between Amla and Du Plessis. And the worst thing for Irish fans is they look completely comfortable, under no pressure and ready to accelerate at any moment. What can William Porterfield do to change this? Who does he need to look at?

  15. SA 118-1published at 05:00 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2015

Eight an over from here would take South Africa to 350. A total that will surely be too much for the Irish. Three more from the 21st over. Two singles from Amla, one from Du Plessis.
