  1. Pak 69-1 (run-rate: 4.60)published at 01:57 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Sarfraz looks in good touch today. After standing outside his crease and charging the fast bowlers earlier, he is now sitting back to the leg-spin of Imran Tahir and gets four with a delicate cut shot.

  2. Pak 63-1 (Sarfraz 25, Younus 17)published at 01:54 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Strange tactics from South Africa, who replace AB de Villiers with another part-time bowler, JP Duminy. Bowling nicely-flighted off-breaks, JP is milked for four singles.

Haris Hameed: I'll be telling my grandkids that I was alive when AB scored the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in ODIs.

Imran Tahir is sporting a beard these days, dotted with specks of grey. It gets us all. There's some indifferent running between the wickets here as Younus Khan almost goes for a suicidal single but the throw goes to the wrong end. Younus makes amends by glancing four down to fine leg.

  5. Pak 54-1 (SA won toss)published at 01:50 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Is there anything AB de Villiers can't do? The master blaster, super skipper and wonderful wicketkeeper is on second change for South Africa. I bet he cooks a mean lasagne too.

Younus Khan doesn't care for reputations though and he wallops a half-tracker through mid-on for four. Another short ball goes for four, this time via Sarfraz, as AB's gentle medium pace falls apart on this drop-in wicket.

  6. Pak 45-1 (Sarfraz 15, Younus 9)published at 01:46 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who has nine wickets in the tournament already, is called upon by AB De Villiers who spends time with his bowler getting the field right.

A long hop is whacked through long mid-on by Younus and goes for four when Faf du Plessis mis-fields on the boundary. You don't see Faf making a hash of things too often. Sarfraz then dabs four down to third man with a beautifully angled bat. Ten from the over.

Shakeel Rabani: This Pakistan team does not seem to have any world class players at all - average at best but better than England.

  8. Pak 35-1 (Sarfraz 10, Younus 4)published at 01:42 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Younus Khan, at the grand old age of 37 and with more than 7,200 ODI runs to his name, is back in the team because Haris Sohail is injured. He gets off the mark with two through backward of square and then weaves out of the way of some Morne Morkel chin music. As so often in this innings already, the minute the ball is over-pitched it is driven towards the boundary. Smart fielding limits Younus to two, but a no-ball is called. The free hit is played and missed.

Martyn Hearne:, external The record books will show that as Abbott's wicket but was all down to the brilliance of Steyn.

Pete Naylor:, external Steyn made that look so easy, so normal. It's something that England need to learn- how to make the extraordinary ordinary.

Nathan Titus:, external Just woke up to witness that catch! Our own Superman Dale Steyn.

  10. Pak 30-1 (Sarfraz 10, Younus 0)published at 01:38 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

South Africa have taken a second slip away and placed a man at straight, silly mid-on. That seemed to panic Ahmed Shehzad into the shot which gave his wicket away. Younus Khan is the new batsman.

"Steyn almost misjudged it but the wind helped a little bit and held it up for him. It was a very athletic bit of cricket, which you do expect from them. The wicket is an important one for South Africa because they have toiled a little bit on this pitch."

What a catch! Ahmed Shehzad chips the ball leg side and Dale Steyn races backwards from mid-on to take a tumbling catch just outside the circle. He ends up face down on the turf, with his sun glasses in the dirt. Superb.

The South Africans are hunting as a pack... the close fielders clapping and egging on big fast bowler Morne Morkel as another bouncer flies past a ducking and diving Sarfraz. One from the over.

"Pakistan try to conserve wickets at all cost at the top of the order - and the cost is runs. They just don't have the confidence and that leaves the middle order with too much ground to make up."

  15. Pak 25-0 (Shehzad 13, Sarfraz 10)published at 01:28 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Ah, so Kyle Abbott hasn't been hit out of the attack... he's just changed ends. Tall and with broad shoulders, he is all arms and legs in delivery as he bends his back quite noticeably. The minute he drops short, Shehzad swivels and just clatters him to the mid-wicket boundary - holding his pose as the ball races away.

  16. Pak 18-0 (Shehzad 8, Sarfraz 9)published at 01:25 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Sarfraz sees sense and decides to stay back when Morne Morkel is brought into the attack. The extra bounce generated by the tall quick has given the aggressive right-hander something extra to think about. Just one from the over as a couple of bouncers keep the two openers in check.

  17. Pak 17-0 (Shehzad 8, Sarfraz 8)published at 01:20 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

The answer to my earlier question is answered... Sarfraz is going to bat outside his crease and take on Dale Steyn. Not sure that's the wisest idea as he drives a single into the off side. Steyn then watches in disbelief as Shehzad plays a nothing shot and the ball takes the inside edge and runs away for four.

Kyle Abbott has gone for the war paint today - smearing it across his face underneath these sunny Auckland skies. When the tall quick pitches the ball up, Shehzad drives him down the ground for four. Those short boundaries through mid-on and mid-off will be targeted today.

  20. Pak 7-0 (Shehzad 0, Sarfraz 6)published at 01:13 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Tonight we're asking which of today's current players you will tell the grandkids about. I reckon a few would throw Dale Steyn's name into the mix - he's got 156 ODI wickets at an average of 25.50, and is one of a select few who consistently bowl at 90mph plus.

Pakistan are struggling to land a punch on him as he probes away outside off stump. Maiden over. Gold-dust.
