David: The next decade of Ashes series will all be about Root and Smith, both long term captains and will both break plenty of records.

Jarieth Eaton: Joe Root is one special talent. Brilliant knock! Long may it continue!

Jeffrey Yeung: Great 100 from Root, I wonder if he can keep this form up if he had to open and the captaincy on his shoulders. Too soon? Probably.

Ah, Hillel, in all of the action, I was unable to mention a fact I've been told about jaffa oranges. Apparently, they have no seeds, Is that correct? Devendra Bishoo switches ends, the Windies might be looking to whip through the 12 overs that remain in this day. Compared to what is going on at the other end, it's all rather sedate.

Hillel: It is unknown exactly where the term Jaffa originates from. It has connotations with the Hebrew word for beautiful. Jaffa oranges are also considered the best type of orange, and it is thought from there the word originates: just like a Jaffa orange, an unplayable delivery attracts wondrous gasps from spectators.

Lots and lots going on out there, the match has sprung to life in this final session. Ballance bowled, Mooen running himself out, Joe Root's ton and now Marlon Samuels bowling to his mate Ben Stokes. Fielding off his own bowling, Samuels whips the ball back in the direction of Stokes, who caught it and threw it back to the bowler. Brilliant. Don't take your eyes off this one.

"Nothing has troubled Root, he has played a number of handsome shots and in the circumstances he came in to - when Cook and Trott had just fallen - he completely altered the situation with how quickly he has played. He has dictated to the West Indies bowlers how he would play."

There it is! A cut for four brings Joe Root his sixth Test century and first outside of England. It's also a century against the fifth different opponent he has played against. From 125 balls, it is the fastest of the Yorkshireman's Test tons. It's been a knock that has added impetus to this England innings, full of cuts, pulls and on drives. He celebrated with a punch of the air, like a man with a bigger score in mind.

"Joe Root is a very energetic runner and it is almost as if Moeen Ali has come in and wanted to copy Root. It sounds harsh on Moeen but I am glad Root did not run because if he had been the one to get out then there would have been two new batsmen at the crease on zero."

  9. Eng 339-5published at 21:48 British Summer Time 23 April 2015

The replays don't make it look any better for Moeen. He worked the ball on the leg side, but it barely got the width of a pitch away. The fielder was quickly on it, with Moeen having to drag himself of as Ramdin broke the stumps. Ben Stokes has put some trousers on to get out to the middle, while Joe Root has late cut Kemar Roach for four to go to 96...

"There is no doubt at all in the previous run-out case that it was Root's fault, but this time this was all his fault. Root was saying no and there was no run there. It is sad having come all the way from England and after bowling on that pitch you would have wanted a bat."

What in the world is going on here? Moeen Ali, that is absolutely village. On his return to the side, Moeen has run himself out, looking for a single that was never on and sent back by Joe Root to not even be in the picture. Marlon Samuels, the bowler, celebrates again, as if that was his doing. It wasn't, it was very poor from Moeen, who has not had a good game.

I wonder if Gary Ballance was undone by the lack of pace. It's hard to describe just how slow the delivery was. The speed was down at 46mph, sluggish enough for Ballance to play about three strokes before the ball actually reached him. Jeremy Snape used to bowl the moon ball - it was one of those. What does this do for England's progress? All of Moeen, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler get on with it. Mind you, Moeen would have been on his way back had a throw from the covers hit the stumps.

"People do not like changing batting orders but I feel like this was the time for Buttler to come in. If he gets out then he gets out but if he gets in then he would be busy and he would play shots like Root, just bigger ones."

  15. Eng 329-4 (Samuels 13-4-20-1)published at 21:38 British Summer Time 23 April 2015

Yep, Ballance dragged that on to his leg stump from a line that began outside off stump. Hello, I've never seen this before. Samuels bowled Ballance, then turned to give non-striker Root a bit of chat. Still some needle between Samuels and England. Moeen Ali is the new man, keeping his spot at number six.

Where did that come from? Gary Ballance has been completely bamboozled by a Marlon Samuels moon ball. Tossed miles high, so slow that is was almost going backwards, Ballance went to biff it through the covers and has drowned in honey. He loses his timbers, perhaps via an inside edge. It's an extraordinary way to go after playing so well.

Jon Ferguson: With the General Election just round the corner, why stop at England Cricket Captain?! Joe Root for PM!

Ross Bentley: These two are going to score a helluva lot of runs for England in the long run.

Buford Spangler: I'm praying to all the gods of cricket that if we lose a wicket before the close we don't send in a nightwatchman.

  19. Eng 328-3 (Ballance 77, Root 85)published at 21:31 British Summer Time 23 April 2015

Excellent question, Steve. Any ideas? "Really close Kemar, really close," says umpire Oxenford, indicating to the returning Roach that he is close to over-stepping and giving away a no-ball. Round the wicket to Ballance, whose bat must be looking as wide as a barn door. What can the Windies do to dislodge one of this pair? Dynamite? An accurate, if unthreatening, maiden.

Luke in Lincoln: I hope Root and Ballance both enjoy all this praise while it lasts, they've got bags of talent, and will probably score a bucket load of runs and centuries. With all fine players, they'll go through same bad form and get ripped to shreds by the England fans for it. Remind you of anyone?

Matilda: What do we think England's plan should be right now? And what do we think the plan is?

Steve in Reading: Why is an unplayable ball called a Jaffa?
