Have some of that. Root with the old step and fetch it, planting a foot in the direction of Bishoo and slog-sweeping towards a cow corner that is bathed in sunshine. He's winning the race to a ton. For how long will this Yorkshire pair be the mainstay of the England middle-order?

"I do not think these two players will have a rush of blood and get out rashly, not with 100s on the way. I think the key will come tomorrow - and when Cook will make the choice to declare.

"The thought will come do we dangle the carrot a bit, not getting too much a lead and then put them in? Maybe the West Indies will make a few more mistakes that way. Alastair is usually a careful, conservative captain so he will probably want a big lead but then if the West Indies batsman know they can only draw the match they will just block on this pitch."

No drinks break for the band, they went right through the interval and continue as Jason Holder resumes the attack. Pictures show the collection of men beating and banging various things, including one huge man playing a tiny cow bell. Slightly incongruous. Left-hander Ballance, 63 runs short of reaching 1,000 in his first 10 Tests, faces up, with shadows creeping from the stand at deep extra cover. A maiden.

"The West Indian players are sheltering inside the boot of the drinks cart. They did it earlier where they opened the boot and I didn't understand why but I get it now."

  6. Drinks breakpublished at 21:16 British Summer Time 23 April 2015

I'm told that there are a few complaints about the date at the top of this live text. It refers to the date the match started not the current date. Still the whirring Bishoo, swept for one by Ballance. Root, wearing a modified helmet that protects the back of his head, takes one of his own. Time for a drink. In theory, there are 20 overs left in the day.

"The West Indies do not look like they are interested right now. I have no advice I could give them at all at the moment. What you cannot do is just go through the motions which is what they are doing right now. They do not look like they have clear plans at the moment."

If there is control coming from Bishoo's end, then it has just been wasted by a long hop from Jason Holder. Joe Root cuts to the boundary, leading the Barmies to sing "four more to the Eng-ger-land". I think they've been on the rum - much, much more lively today. Nick, texting 81111, has asked where 'cow corner' is. It's on the leg-side boundary, between deep mid-wicket and long-on. If there's any more questions, we'll do our best to answer them. If we can't, we'll let the readers have a go.

"Bishoo has recovered from that spell where he was bowling half-trackers and was getting hit for fours and sixes. He has got back a bit of control."

"These two are rubbish, bring back KP or blood some youngsters!" That's an email I've just seen in the TMS inbox. I think it may have been sent to be deliberately provocative. Another email points out that England are playing at St George's, on St George's Day. Have we already touched on that? If so, apologies. Devendra Bishoo, improving as his spell develops, goes for only one from his set.

I'm fascinated by this revelation of DRS glitches - how often do they happen? Is there a whole world, perhaps being played out in a caravan on the car park, that we're not aware of? There's a rare sight, the ball going past the outside edge. And again. Holder bowling well to Ballance. It's glorious in Grenada, the sort of weather that travelling England fans have paid a a lot of money for. The sunshine has given the Barmy trumpeter energy he hasn't had for much of the Test - there's more blowing of the horn that at any other point in the match.

  13. Text 81111published at 21:00 British Summer Time 23 April 2015

Rob in London: RE: DRS glitches - I recall being told by a friend who worked for Hawkeye in the pre-DRS days (circa 2005 Ashes) that when they weren't able to show a Hawkeye replay of a contentious decision, it was usually because the technician in the van outside had forgotten to hit the spacebar to reset the system in between deliveries.

  14. Eng 303-3 (100 overs)published at 20:59 British Summer Time 23 April 2015

The Barmies give it another blast of Jerusalem - I thought that was the exclusive preserve of the start of play? Still Bishoo, with catchers around the bat slowly deserting him, three singles taken. England's progress is entirely untroubled - there's runs to be had, boys.

  16. Eng 300-3 (lead by 1)published at 20:56 British Summer Time 23 April 2015

Jason Holder, perhaps underused with only 14 overs in the innings, is summoned to try to stop the tide. The athletic all-rounder finds a decent length, keeping this pair honest as the shadows just start to elongate.

On the England balcony, darts-loving Alastair Cook and James Anderson lean back. England's leading Test wicket-taker and the soon-to-be leading runscorer. Would they get into an all-time XI? Ben Stokes sits nearby, he's wearing a thigh pad, but no trousers. Airy. When keeper Ramdin accidentally gets his feet nailed to the floor, four byes take England into the lead.

Matt King: England need to risk it and declare ASAP, try and bowl West Indies out, or it ends in another draw.

Adam Tillsley: Apologies if I put mockers on him, but how good is Joe Root! Captain material?

Shannon McKee: If Joe Root doesn't become England's all-time leading runs scorer, something will have gone badly wrong, England's best batsman.

Bishoo as the sun momentarily ducks behind a cloud, serving a floaty, loopy leg-break that Root eases through the covers for a couple. Shannon Gabriel, fielding at mid-on, gets the ball and give it some of the most forceful shining I have ever seen, as if trying to coax something magic from it. If a genie appeared, what would Denesh Ramdin's three wishes be? "I'll have Ambrose, Walsh and Marshall please."

  20. Eng 292-3 (Ballance 66, Root 65)published at 20:46 British Summer Time 23 April 2015

Gary Ballance has so many red marks on the blade of his bat, it's hard to see any wood. It's the bat of a man that has spent a long time facing the bowling machine. A cricket-playing friend of mine once saw a perfectly good bat crack because his wife used it to hammer nails into the wall. He was completely heartbroken. Divorce papers have been filed for less. Still the hulking Gabriel, over the wicket to Root, round the wicket to Ballance. Singles taken.
