Moeen is trapped on the pad, he asks for a review but it is not overturned, umpire's call on the issue of height is the verdict. Still England bat on with their final wicket pairing.

Jack Butterworth: Lots of chat about England being over-cautious, but if we'd set NZ 340 in 50 overs in the World Cup, you'd still have said they had a good sniff of getting it. In 80 overs? Easy. You need at least 370ish in 70 overs in this day and age, against this side.

  3. Eng 478-8 (lead by 344)published at 11:46 British Summer Time 25 May 2015

Lovely batting from Moeen, exquisitely struck pull shot for his seventh boundary. Southee strays again and Wood gets off the mark with a leg glance for four. The lead is now the same as the West Indies scored in 1984.

Tim, Bristol: Cook will declare with a lead of 350, we'll roll NZ for 300 and it'll all be worth it when I fail my exam tomorrow.

English cricket: wrecking futures since 1877.

"Entertaining stuff at Lord's, lots of ooohs and aaahs, with a smattering of applause, cheers, the odd finger of an umpire and leather on stump. It's almost the fun before the real game begins, the New Zealand chase is the real meat of this day."

  6. Eng 467-8 (Moeen 36, Wood 0)published at 11:41 British Summer Time 25 May 2015

Debutant Mark Wood is the new man, yet to be dismissed in Test cricket after his unbeaten eight in the first innings and averaging 20 in first-class cricket for Durham. Three slips and a gully as Boult charges in. What's the plan now then? Intriguing. Still plenty of time left for New Zealand to have a go at these runs.

"Broad stayed his ground a little better than the last few innings. He is not backing away but is sat on the back foot and it is a recipe for a yorker. It is an improvement but it is not back to the Stuart Broad we know. He has work to do."

Well there was a hook for six from Broad, but when hopes were raised that the confidence was back, the next one was fuller and it rattled the timbers.

    Geoffrey Boycott

"I don't think Cook will dangle the carrot. 344 is the highest chase at Lord's. I don't think he will leave New Zealand that to get."

  10. Eng 459-7 (Moeen 36, Broad 2)published at 11:36 British Summer Time 25 May 2015

Stuart Broad is the new man, and he has not exactly been plundering the runs in recent times, 13 in his last five innings to be precise, including three ducks. As expected for a man who has admitted to suffering nightmares about being hit in the face by the ball again, there are a few short ones from Southee but Broad is up to the task and he collects another single. Southee will be having nightmares about the short ball in any case after the battering his bowling received from Ben Stokes.

"Just listen to the applause of this huge crowd. It is a terrific moment for Cook and English cricket. Cook is not an emotional man but even his heart must be doing over-time at the moment."

Pretty sure I can see a nick says the Australian official. The decision is overturned and the captain has to depart after a remarkable nine hours and seven minutes at the crease.

Cook is the subject of a caught behind here off Boult. What's third umpire Rod Tucker going to say?

Jonathan Evans: I only see Cook declaring 40 minutes before lunch. Give the batsmen a mini session, can't score too much. After lunch, go again!

Jeffrey Yeung: By the manner Ali and Cook are batting and running between the wickets, clearly Cook wants to declare pretty soon

Successive boundaries for Cook take him into the 160s, and even a quick single is enthusiastically cheered by the large crowd, although there is a section of seats with only one gentleman in it, feet up.

Beautiful flick off the pads from Moeen brings him his third four of the morning, the ball racing across the perfectly manicured turf, the first runs conceded by Boult today.

Has Moeen been given the licence to attack? he plays a smooth cover drive to the boundary off Southee and then hooks for two more, signalling the fifty partnership from 124 balls. Trouble is, the ease of these runs might delay Cook's declaration further.
