From 30-4 on day one to a 124-run victory on day five. It has been a rollercoaster ride for England, played out as moves are made in the background to appoint a new head coach.
At 11:45 BST on Thursday morning, that head coach role looked like a poisoned chalice. Not anymore. For the first time in a long time, England can look to the future with optimism following a stunning Test match that could well have made the English public fall in love with their team again.

England caretaker coach Paul Farbrace, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's been a great day. It's fitting that it went as long as it did. Full credit to both teams.
"I've tried not to do anything differently. The key was to make it as normal as possible for the players and they have responded to that. We encouraged the lads to play good cricket and have fun and that's what we have always tried to do. It's been a continuation of what has been going on. I got excited with a few wickets to go, but I could be forgiven for that.
"It's all very well about being a developing side but international sport is about the here and now and winning. There's a lot of good players on the fringes and the people who leave the ground today will be excited about the English cricket team."
On the possible appointment of Trevor Bayliss: "He's an old-fashioned cricket coach, who likes working in the nets. He's quiet but when he says something it counts. He's a good man who is very knowledgeable. He has experience all round the world. I want to be involved in the future, whatever the role is."

Man of the match - Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes, who scored the fastest ever Test century at Lord's and took three wickets today: "Without doubt, it's a career highlight. The whole match has been amazing. I have been striking the ball pretty well in the nets but I didn't expect that innings. It was more of a fluke.
"There's always opportunities to score with the fields Brendon sets and Lord's is a fast-scoring field. It was a lovely moment when I got two wickets in two balls today and the crowd were magnificent."

England captain Alastair Cook: "Thank god Mo hung on to that catch... it was never in doubt!
"My innings [162] was up there with my best. We got a little bit of luck with playing and missing but we got through that and great credit to Joe Root and then Ben Stokes played an innings of the like I've never seen before. We had a 100 lead when he came in, and when he was out two hours later it was about 270 and I'd scored 10 of them!
"Today, the way our guys bowled... we fought incredibly hard on a great cricket wicket. It's been a real team effort this week. It's been a rocky few weeks so to play with such freedom and passion, the lads are pleased with that."
Captain's reaction
New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum: "At Headingley on Friday we'll continue to play like we have in this Test match. Sometimes it doesn't work out but it gives us our best chance of winning."
Captain's reaction
New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum on Test Match Special: "We played a brand of cricket we wanted but England deserved their win. We're on the right road with the style of cricket were playing."

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum: "I thought we played our part in a tremendous Test match. Great credit to England. Even when we were dominating they kept going and they played an enterprising brand of cricket. The game was played in a tremendous spirit too.
"We got over 730 runs in the Test and still lost by more than 100 runs. It's not every day that happens but we hold our heads high. It's such a fine line between success and failure.
"It was tactical for me to drop down the batting order [from five to six]. BJ Watling has done it for us before and we thought that if he could generate a partnership with Kane, the hitters like Corey Anderson and I could come in and have a realistic go at getting the target."
Captain's reaction

ENGLAND WIN BY 124 RUNS
What a game. What a dramatic, gripping, entertaining, twisty, turny game.
England have not had many high moments in recent years but they can really savour this one. From seeming on-field and off-field chaos they have pulled out a performance that gives everyone connected with the team hope for the future.
They were brave, bold, resilient and, finally, ruthless. They are not the finished article by any means, but they appear to be a hell of a lot closer at the end of these five days than they were on Thursday. Bravo.
"It was one of the best Test matches of the modern era. Sometimes a great story needs a great ending and the look on Moeen's face after that fantastic catch was a mixture of joy, innocence and hopefulness. If England can remember those three things in the next 12 months of hard cricket it would be a wonderful thing."
"My heart bleeds for the New Zealanders, the last two stayed firm but that one got away and now they are very sportingly shaking hands with the England side."
"Well played England, their bowling in the end proved to be the difference. Eight and a half overs isn't a lot over five days but they have just been able to hold the edge throughout this game."
ENGLAND WIN BY 124 RUNS
Boult c Moeen b Broad 10 (NZ 220 all out)
It's all over! England are victorious! Broad comes round the wicket to Boult who backs away and looks to steer one down to third man, but he gets too much on it and sends the ball spiralling upwards for Moeen Ali to take a superb diving catch in the deep.
An extraordinary game of cricket comes to an end. You almost don't want it to be over. But it is, and England have won it and boy are they enjoying the moment.
In Marlon Samuels/Joe Root style, I salute every single person involved.
"Will Broad continue to Boult and will he come around the wicket and try to attack him in that blind spot area? There are still 10 overs scheduled left to go so no need to panic at this stage. Down to five overs and it gets a wee bit tense."

NZ 218-9 (10 overs remaining)
Right then Jimmy, what have you got left in the tank? Craig, crouched in his stance with eyes like saucers, awaits England's leading all-time wicket-taker. He blocks, he bobs, he weaves and then wafts at one that sends the ball agonisingly close to the slips but safe before catching an edge off a rising ball to send the ball looping to the vacant silly point area.

These two are doing a fine job of frustrating England. Boult's step-away technique is proving effective as he digs out a Broad yorker and then angles another full ball through point for four. Jimmy Anderson is warming up. A 400th Test wicket wouldn't be the worst way for this game to end.

Stokes is too wide or short and not challenging Henry to play. The number 10 is more than happy to leave. NZ 206-9 (England need one wicket for victory)
Broad, who played a key role in starting England's charge towards potential victory in this innings, returns. New Zealand are refusing to go quietly, though, as Boult opens his stance and punches over mid-off for four.
"It's been a little bit disappointing for the New Zealand team, they will feel there has been enough to suggest they were in the game. To score 523 and then lose the match they will feel they have let themselves down. England got some momentum going and just ran with it. A good delivery removed Guptill early and the wickets of Watling and Anderson were obviously important."

NZ 200-9
Boult, surrounded by fielders like a gazelle cornered by a group of slavering lions, does his best to keep out Moeen. He does just that, but not without another swipe of lunacy to try and crack a full ball over mid-on. He doesn't connect, though, and potential runs are stopped by Root.

Terry Mahoney in Chichester: Geoffrey Boycott and others have been captivated by the atmosphere at Lords today. As well as an enthralling Test Match maybe it also has to do with the fact that it is a fifth day crowd. It's a public holiday. Therefore corporate guests will be absent. Today's audience are people who don't normally get the chance to see cricket live and are making the most of it. The administrators should maybe recognise in the future that the best atmosphere isn't always generated by people who will pay the most for the privilege of watching cricket at Lords.
NZ 200-9 (Boult 0, Henry 2)
It would be apt if Ben Stokes was to take the wicket that seals this win. His fingerprints are all over this performance. He charges in but Henry is right behind every shot and keeps the Durham seamer and his expectant country at bay.

Southee is a capable tail-ender, which he shows with a cut to punch Wood square for a boundary, then a lofted drive down the ground for another and a lifted flick through backward point for a third in an over that goes for 18. The Kiwis are treating this like a one-dayer, not a Test match they are aiming to see out for a draw. It's crazy but it sure is entertaining.

NZ 174-6 (Anderson 67, Craig 0)
Mark Craig is the new batsman, another stocky left-hander, rather less capable than Anderson, although he does have a couple of 60s, against West Indies and Pakistan, and has an average of 35. He is on a pair here but keeps out the combative Wood quite comfortably.

If this was the 2005 Ashes, Wood could play the role of Simon Jones, bursting with the occasional devastating burst of express pace. Root continues with his off-spin, there are three men crowded around the burly Anderson, brave indeed, and the big fellow thumps one through the leg-side for four.

"The crowd are loving this, egging England on. Today in particular, England have been really encouraged for the win which is great because you don't always get that."
NZ 168-5 (Watling 59, Anderson 61)
Young Joe Root is the surprising choice as the next bowler and far from being bullied by the muscular Anderson he has the left-hander in a spot or two of bother. A maiden.
"The bowlers know if they get a breakthrough, they can get another. It is that kind of pitch. Batsmen can get in for an hour and score runs but it can change very quickly."
NZ 168-5 (min 28 overs left)
Debutant Wood returns to the attack from the Pavilion End. He sets off like a long jumper and has a tremendous leap as he reaches the crease. Still finding his feet though and Watling clips one assiduously off his pads for his ninth boundary.

Trevor Bayliss is a 52-year-old Australian who is currently coach of New South Wales in Australia and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
He was reported to be among the candidates to take charge of England when Peter Moores was appointed in 2014, although he is probably best known for leading Sri Lanka to the World Cup final in 2011. He was on the Sri Lanka team bus when it was attacked by gunmen in Pakistan in 2009.
Bayliss has won several domestic trophies: he coached NSW to the Sheffield Shield title in 2004-05 and the ING Trophy the following season.
After a four-year spell in charge of Sri Lanka - during which time he worked alongside England's current stand-in coach Paul Farbrace - he won the inaugural Big Bash and the Champions League T20 with Sydney Sixers in 2012, and the IPL with the Knight Riders the same year.
A former Australian off-spinning all-rounder, Bayliss played 58 first-class matches but never represented Australia. He filled in as coach for Darren Lehmann during Australia's T20 series against South Africa in 2014.

Andy Hawkes: If NZ get to 175-5 I'll start getting a bit twitchy. While Anderson is still in they have a chance.
Post update
So, 36 overs left, five wickets needed by England, 211 runs needed by New Zealand.
If England are to push on to a famous victory (which is more likely than a tourist win right now) they need to break this partnership, which has consolidated well for 73 runs since Ben Stokes did for Williamson and McCullum in successive balls.
It is a huge ask for New Zealand to win this, but the longer Anderson sticks around and playing like he is, the more nervous Lord's will get nervous. But let's not think about that until we have to.
Jason Gillespie on England coach's job
More from Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie, who looks to have been beaten to the England job by Trevor Bayliss: "I know Trevor. I don't know him particularly well but everyone who has worked with him has had nothing but very positive things to say about him.
"Paul Farbrace has worked with him in the past with Sri Lanka and I'm sure they will be delighted to work together again.
"Farbrace is a fantastic coach - he's great with support staff, great with players. He's somebody England certainly should keep there."
Jason Gillespie on England coach's job
Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie has said he is not the England and Wales Cricket Board's "preferred candidate" to become England coach.
The ECB is in exclusive discussions with its first-choice coach, understood to be Trevor Bayliss.
More from Gillespie on BBC Radio Leeds: "Throughout the whole process the ECB have been very good. It was made clear to me there are a number of candidates. I certainly haven't been led down the garden path at all.
"It was good to go and meet with Andrew and Tom Harrison. It was just a discussion on their plans for the future and what they want to do with English cricket.
"They asked if was interested in making a contribution and I said let's just keep having a chat. They were very professional throughout the whole process."
matt wilkinson: Think we should have declared first thing this morning. Come on lads prove me wrong for once!
Ben Sutton: I'm sorry but Moeen ain't good enough. If he's at 8 then we may as well pick a young out and out spinner and give him time.
NZ 134-5 (Watling 36, Anderson 51)
Broad continues to dig it in for Watling as Lyth waits expectantly at short leg. The keeper is able to knock a fuller one through mid-on for a couple and a full-toss to deep mid-wicket for a single. That is lunch and the end of another gripping, dramatic, entertaining session. What a Test match!
"One of the things about the non-declaration is that New Zealand were able to get past that 80 overs left in the day mark, so there is no second new ball for England."

NZ 131-5 (Anderson 51, Watling 33)
Chaos in the field as Wood goes to catch a ball to hand to bowler Broad and tumbles over Lyth, who is putting the shin guards on. Like any crowd worth its salt, they react with a 'waaaaaaay'. Having donned his kit, Lyth crouches at short-leg as Broad peppers Watling with some chin music. He copes well but looks ruffled enough to believe England will continue with the strategy.
"Raw brutality is part of Corey Anderson's game. He reminds me of a bouncer outside a club, who would make mincemeat out of me."
50 for Anderson
NZ 131-5
Anderson's assault continues with a slap down over mid-off for four and a a one-kneed swipe to mid-wicket for another. That is his 50, off just 44 balls. Brutal. 38 overs gone. 39 to go. It remains thoroughly gripping.

Speaking of Tinder, Anderson continues to swipe right and left. He takes Moeen for another boundary, this time over mid-off. He is then outsmarted by Moeen with two spinning, looping balls that beat the swooshing bat of the big fella.

It is a switch of ends for Moeen, who twirls away from the Nursery End but continues to suffer at the hands of Anderson, courtesy of a back-foot punch through mid-on for four and then a back-foot fall-away slap through mid-off for another boundary. It is not orthodox but it is effective.

The Moeen experiment is over as Cook turns to his trusty attack leader, Anderson, who is one short of 400 Test wickets. His namesake would be a good scalp to reach the milestone. It is a fine contest between the two . Corey treats Jimmy with respect.

NZ 85-5 (Target 345)
Stokes is on top for three calm balls before Anderson brutally bashes a full ball down the pitch for four. He then has an old-school slog to try and mow one down to cow corner, but there is a man there to stop it. Does Anderson still think the run-chase is on? The way he is playing, he does.
NZ 81-5 (Anderson 14, Watling 23)
Watling is providing stubborn resistance against the England tide. He flat bats another Moeen over. It gives Anderson and Stokes another chance to go toe-to-toe.
"Stokes has his arms full of tattoos - he is the modern man. He is very similar to a Flintoff or a Botham in the way he plays the game."
NZ 81-5
Stokes continues. Of course he does. Watling gloves the first ball, from back of a length, down leg side for four. They are the only runs of the over. Thank god for Ben Stokes. I was beginning to think I'd cursed England by coming on to describe the action. It was a genuine pleasure to be able to write about that little period. Stokes is the symbol of English optimism at the moment. He stands at the end of his run-up as the Lord's crowd cheer with expectation. His run-up is accompanied by thunderous clapping. Corey Anderson clearly hasn't read the script as he punches between mid-wicket and mid-on for four, then hammers down the ground for another boundary before clattering one to cow for six. Anderson has the build of a middle-weight boxer and if he is going down, he is going down swinging. It all makes for superb cricket.

England have the bit between their teeth now. Wood charges in at the best of times but he is hurtling in now like he could bust down a brick wall. His first ball shoots up from nowhere and wraps Watling on the gloves. The batsman does really well not to send that hurtling towards gully. McCullum b Stokes 0 (NZ 61-5)
Wow! Just wow! McCullum - New Zealand's captain and one of the finest most destructive batsmen in world cricket - strides to the crease with intent and is sent to trudging back dejectedly one ball later. Stokes' delivery is short and jags back sharply in to McCullum who gets something on it but is unable to prevent the ball coming back of his body and on to the stumps. If Lord's had a roof, it would be on its way to the moon right now.
"Joe Root has got the salute out, great catch low down off his boot laces but what three balls before, you could feel something was happening and the dangerman goes. Deserved that, because he bowled very well in the first innings. He's on a bit of a roll is Ben Stokes."
WICKET
Williamson c Root b Stokes 27 (NZ 61-4)
Yes! Brilliant! Stokes delivers three absolutely glorious balls - the first rises sharply and darts past the bat to shake Williamson up, the second nips past his outside edge and the third draws a loose poke to off that catches the bat and is caught low down by Root at gully. The roar around the ground says it all. The main source of resistance is gone. England are on the charge!

Anyway, Wood continues to charge in but Watling is able to see him off, with four leg byes being added to the New Zealand total courtesy of flicked pad down to fine leg.
"Interesting to see when Moeen comes on, Cook hasn't got a lot of confidence in him I don't think but it just brings a few men around the bat and creates that feeling of pressure. Another five or 10 minutes and I'd be looking to have a bit of Moeen."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
The odds on Trevor Bayliss being appointed England coach appear to have shortened some more...
Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie, who was seen as the favourite for the job, has revealed he is not the England and Wales Cricket Board's choice to take over.
Australian Gillespie, who said he spoke to England cricket director Andrew Strauss on Monday, told BBC Radio Leeds: "He said they've got a preferred candidate they're speaking to. That's absolutely fine, no worries at all."
Peter in Bournemouth: Trevor Bayliss a wind - up or will he make the team run like clockwork?
NZ 54-3
Broad gets a pop at Watling and draws approval from the crowd with a full ball that nips off a length and draws a loose, connection-free flash from the batsman. Williamson takes over and calms matters down. Cook maybe needs another shake-up of his attack. Moeen?
NZ 51-3 (Target 345)
England won't mind New Zealand scoring boundaries while playing away from the body. Wood catches an edge off Watling's bat that sends the ball skipping past the skip cordon and down to the rope. Wood then keeps Watling on his toes (or on his knees to be more accurate) with a short ball that rises past the batsman's ducking head.
"I think Jimmy Anderson will get a bowl shortly. I'm a great believer in putting your best bowlers on after lunch or tea or the start of a day. Anderson is the top-class bowler and you can bowl him in short spells because you've got four seamers."

The delivery Wood has in his locker when he moves wider in the crease to deliver is a useful weapon. He slams one in short of a length and sends the ball whistling past the outside of Williamson's loosely offered back-foot defensive shot. Williamson responds by going back to push a subsequent ball through cover for four. It remains a gripping contest.
"Trevor Bayliss has suddenly appeared. He has got a good track record behind him - he coached Sri Lanka to the World Cup final. But he hasn't got a lot of international playing experience - he didn't play for Australia.
"Gillespie appeared to be the favourite. But Andrew Strauss said he would do a thorough job and then make a decision. And that's what his role is."

England in exclusive discussions with new coach
Just to recap, England are in exclusive discussions with their new coach, understood to be Australian Trevor Bayliss.
Reports in Australia suggest the New South Wales and Kolkata Knight Riders coach, 52, is set to be appointed as Peter Moores's successor, possibly within the next 24 hours.
Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie held talks over the position with director of cricket Andrew Strauss last week.
Australian journalist Melinda Farrell from Cricinfo, on whether being Australian is a problem for Trevor Bayliss: "When you are a sportsman or professional coach the drive to win and the drive to succeed [overcomes everything else]. It will be great to have fresh new ideas come in.
"Andrew Strauss, when he had his presser here, was asked what his goal was and he said it was to make England a consistently world-class side.
"Australia set the bar really high and I think it will be really refreshing for England cricket to have someone come from that kind of background."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Daily Mail cricket correspondent Paul Newman: "I do think it's a slight issue having an Aussie coach because it is the old enemy. Could you imagine an Englishman coaching Australia? I certainly think it's a talking point, but these guys don't look at it like that."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Daily Telegraph deputy cricket correspondent Nick Hoult: "I would think the ECB would want to announce it as soon as possible. This a is a good news story: England have appointed a coach with really good track record. Presumably they haven't finished negotiations."

Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Daily Mail cricket correspondent Paul Newman: "One of the things about Gillespie is that he is a big family man. In talks he made it clear he didn't want to be on the treadmill 12 months of the year, and that is where Bayliss has come through. I'm sure Paul Farbrace will stay as his assistant - there is a good bond between them."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Daily Telegraph deputy cricket correspondent Nick Hoult: "I wonder if Strauss has looked at this guy and seen Duncan Fletcher. He's a similar age; he likes to sit in the background and let the captain run the team. That little bit more experience has perhaps won him the job over Gillespie."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Australian journalist Melinda Farrell from Cricinfo: "I don't know Trevor Bayliss personally but I have actually spoken to a lot of people around the Sixes and New South Wales and what I hear is that he creates an environment where players are very comfortable.
"He creates an environment where the players are responsible for their own discipline. He is not one for yelling and putting pressure on players and making them feel they can be dropped at any moment. He wants them to feel comfortable. I have heard stories about players fining each other to take on the responsibility."
"This is a man who comes pretty well-equipped for one-day cricket."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Daily Telegraph deputy cricket correspondent Nick Hoult: "Andrew Strauss has always said he is talking to other candidates."

Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Daily Mail cricket correspondent Paul Newman: "It has taken most people by surprise, most thought it was going to be Gillespie. Bayliss didn't appear to be in the running this time but he sounds like a good candidate. It's a bold choice by Strauss, he clearly doesn't want to take the popular choice, but Bayliss is talked of incredibly highly by people, I've heard Paul Farbrace in particular speak well of him."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Daily Telegraph deputy cricket correspondent Nick Hoult: "When you start talking to people in Australia, you realise this is pretty far advanced.
"I understand that he was initially lukewarm to the offer but he was contacted again over the week and offered an contract he couldn't refuse."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Australian journalist Melinda Farrell from Cricinfo: "Bayliss has been approached and is seriously considering it is what I have heard from people in Australia."
"It now seems Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie will be talking to us at around 1.40-1:45. I feel a bit sorry for him in that he was never offered the job and now he will talk about not getting it."

Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
Ed Smith, who was at Kent when Trevor Bayliss coached there briefly in 2003: "Steve Waugh played for Kent in 2002 and I think in the off-season there was a dialogue with New South Wales about Bayliss coming to Kent for spell to develop his coaching.
"He came over at the beginning of pre-season in 2003 and he was excellent - understated, nuts and bolts, got stuck in to work with players. His playing career may have influenced his coaching style as he was in a very strong NSW side, and he could slip in under the radar and be unsung. In coaching, he is happy to do the same. And he is a nice guy."
Lunch discussion on TMS
TMS are discussing Trevor Bayliss live on air now and will be joined a panel of journalists: Nick Hoult from the Daily Telegraph, Australian Melinda Farrell from Cricinfo and Paul Newman from the Daily Mail.
Who is Trevor Bayliss?
"The last 40 minutes of cricket, New Zealand have capitulated and England are in the ascendancy. It is amazing the ways the fortunes have swung for each side in this match."

Lord's GroundCopyright: Lord's Ground
Lunch: NZ 21-3 (13 overs)
Target 345
Wood is moving the ball both ways off the seam at good pace, Watling with only a single from his first 25 balls, flashes at a short one but it evades the packed slip cordon and away for four. That's lunch and what a session the large Lord's crowd have enjoyed.
"Kane Williamson is pivotal for the rest of the day's play."
NZ 17-3 (Williamson 7, Watling 1)
Target 345
England's new hero Ben Stokes is also introduced in a double change. He's got four slips and a gully waiting expectantly for a catch. There is some inswing to the right-handers in the early 80's mph but no chance, one bye resulting as Buttler cannot stop one that scuttles along the ground. Time for one more over before lunch.

Joseph Crilley: Stuart Broad showing why England persevere with him through bad form, when he's hot, he can be unplayable.
Stacey Clivesdale: Yesterday I called for Stokes to open the bowling instead of Broad - never been more happy to be wrong.
NZ 16-3 (Williamson 7, Watling 1)
Target 345
Debutant Mark Wood is brought into the attack for a pre-lunch burst. His pace is immediately up in the high 80's and he concedes just the two singles in an accurate opening over.
Email tms@bbc.co.uk
George Atkins: Hoping Broady comes up with another inspirational spell reminiscent of Day 4 at the Oval in 2009 vs the Aussies and then against the South Africans in 2010 with the 14 ball decimation. Finally vs New Zealand his 7 wickets in 11 overs. Worth having Broady simply for these moments. Great asset to English cricket as a whole.
"Broad in particular is running a bit wider and angling it back in to the right-handers. He is getting decent bounce. Batsmen can get into a siege mentality, stop moving their feet and just pushing at the ball."
NZ 14-3 (Broad 2-7)
Target 345
Broad is a most mercurial bowler. He seems to have bursts where he is virtually unplayable but we were only speculating this morning that there have not been many of them of late. Watling prodding forward so hesitantly it is as if he expecting a serpent to emerge from the ball. One delivery nips back in but Watling survives.
"This is a Test match that has seen everything. England were 30-4 on the first day. Who would have thought we'd have this situation now on the final day?"

Chris: Can we tell Lewis (12:30) to check his grammar before he sends that assignment in!
We're all feeling the pressure Chris
NZ 14-3 (Anderson 1-7)
Target 345
Jimmy is up towards 87mph on the speedometer but the trusty radar has gone a little awry. He keeps the awayswingers going but Williamson is able to leave many of them. The Kiwis counting down the minutes before lunch and the brief sanctuary of the famous pavilion.

Howard Horner: Please don't be a dream, please don't be a dream, please don't be a dream...
If it is Howard, we are talking Matrix levels of shared fantasy. Actually, I'm not sure this would work as the Matrix. Didn't humanity reject the version that was perfect?
NZ 14-3 (Williamson 6, Watling 0)
Four slips and a gully for Broad now, with new boy Lyth under the helmet at short-leg. New Zealand skipper McCullum is padded up in the pavilion, chewing his gum with understandable alacrity. Just the single in the over.

Will in Hale: To think a flashing orange light that haunted me on Thursday could bring me so much delight today! You have to love text alerts when your side's on top.
NZ 13-3
The tourists are clinging on with their fingertips at the moment as England turn the screw as if they are driving it into a block of butter. Anderson draws another cheer from the crowd as Watling sends one to Root's hands, but it is after a bounce, not flush from the bat. We have 22 minutes left before lunch. Blink if you dare.
"Wickets falling and they are out of kilter with the rest of the match. Suddenly it is England who are driving through at the important times of the match."
APCopyright: AP
NZ 12-3 (Williamson 4, Watling 0)
BJ Watling is the new man and he is welcomed to the crease with a ripper from Broad that rise off a length, beats the batsman for pace and flies just past the off stump. Ooos and Aaas from the ever-growing crowd. Lord's is a cauldron of noise.
WICKET
Taylor lbw Broad 8 (NZ 12-3)
Not very expensive at all is the answer. Taylor added six runs after that reprieve, including a cut to the boundary, but is then pinned on the pads by a revitalised Broad and again the Kiwis do not even attempt an appeal.

Lewis Squires: Well my assignment was being delivered at Ben Stokes pace, now I've wrote nothing in the last 15 minutes! What a start.
Seems like the world has stopped to watch this Test match. I hope the fellas looking after the Large Hadron Collider aren't cricket fans.
NZ 8-2 (Williamson 4, Taylor 4)
High fair weather cloud, plenty of blue sky and an engrossed crowd sensing an England victory. Just the single in this Anderson over. How expensive is Root's drop going to be?
NZ 7-2
Broad finishes another good over, that should have seen him claim another wicket. He shares a little high five with a very apologetic Joe Root.

Simon Goodall: Joe Root proving to everyone the guy is actually human.
"This is an absolute goober for a slip. It is perfect height, 12 inches above the ground from a dab of the bat from Taylor. This is great from Broad, though. The crowd can sense it. New Zealand are going to have to be on the top of their game."
Taylor dropped on 2
More drama. Taylor spilled low at slip by Joe Root off Broad, who has his head in his hands.

NZ 6-2 (target 345)
Confident pull shot from Williamson rockets to the boundary as Anderson drops short. Particularly confident given the loss of his two openers for ducks. So let's recap, England added 49 and set the Kiwis 345. The tourists then lost two wickets for no run in seven balls.

NZ 1-2 (Anderson 1-0, Broad 1-1)
Target 345
With Broad dismissing Boult in the first innings he is technically on a hat-trick but Taylor blocks the attempted yorker. Taylor gets New Zealand off the mark with a single but that target of 345 looks rather distant. Who could have predicted this scenario before lunch? And what will we have in store for the afternoon?
"The chase has just stopped. I cant imagine New Zealand thinking anything other than 'how do we get to Leeds at 0-0?'. It is a great delivery to a left-hander first up. He got done in the air. His head got wrong side of the ball."

NZ 0-1 (Anderson 1-0)
Target 345
Three slips a gully, a short cover for Anderson, who is finding plenty of bounce at 85mph. A hint of more away swing but the composed Kane Williamson keeps out the rest of the over. Anderson remains on 399 Test wickets.
"This is a terrific chance. It's a good ball - he just pushes at it. Brilliant catch - it went sharp to this left. What a start! Perfect start!"

Second ball of the innings and Anderson strikes. Just enough movement around off stump, Guptill pushes forward, a thick edge and smartly snaffled at third slip by Gary Ballance.
"It's good that the England team got bowled out in the end. Will New Zealand go for it? I'm not so sure. If you're going to get anywhere near that target, a Brendon McCullum-type player needs to come off.

Eng 478-8 (lead by 344)

"Entertaining stuff at Lord's, lots of ooohs and aaahs, with a smattering of applause, cheers, the odd finger of an umpire and leather on stump. It's almost the fun before the real game begins, the New Zealand chase is the real meat of this day."
Eng 467-8 (Moeen 36, Wood 0)
Debutant Mark Wood is the new man, yet to be dismissed in Test cricket after his unbeaten eight in the first innings and averaging 20 in first-class cricket for Durham. Three slips and a gully as Boult charges in. What's the plan now then? Intriguing. Still plenty of time left for New Zealand to have a go at these runs.
"Broad stayed his ground a little better than the last few innings. He is not backing away but is sat on the back foot and it is a recipe for a yorker. It is an improvement but it is not back to the Stuart Broad we know. He has work to do."
WICKET
Broad b Boult 10 (Eng 467-8, lead by 333)
Well there was a hook for six from Broad, but when hopes were raised that the confidence was back, the next one was fuller and it rattled the timbers.
"I don't think Cook will dangle the carrot. 344 is the highest chase at Lord's. I don't think he will leave New Zealand that to get."
Eng 459-7 (Moeen 36, Broad 2)
Stuart Broad is the new man, and he has not exactly been plundering the runs in recent times, 13 in his last five innings to be precise, including three ducks. As expected for a man who has admitted to suffering nightmares about being hit in the face by the ball again, there are a few short ones from Southee but Broad is up to the task and he collects another single. Southee will be having nightmares about the short ball in any case after the battering his bowling received from Ben Stokes.
"Just listen to the applause of this huge crowd. It is a terrific moment for Cook and English cricket. Cook is not an emotional man but even his heart must be doing over-time at the moment."

Now only one team has ever successfully chased more than 300 to win a Lord's Test, that superb West Indies side of 1984, so the odds are in England's favour. Boult hits Cook on the pads but there is no appeal. Another maiden.
"With a declaration, the England captain will have to factor in Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum and Corey Anderson - three players who can really smack it around the park. Best way is to get bowled out."
Eng 433-6 (Cook 153, Moeen 23)

New England director of cricket Andrew Strauss will be happier about proceedings now, he is looking very smart in his dark blue suit, casting an eye over the large crowd. A circumspect maiden over played out by Cook.
"A sign of the different kind of crowd we have today was the number of people waiting for the England players to come from the nets. On the first four days, they have practically been ignored, as if they were merely the background entertainment at a garden party.
"Today, they were mobbed like stars, a huge tunnel formed underneath the media centre for the players to pass through. Autograph books and cameras out, big attention for Ben Stokes and Joe Root. Who got the biggest cheer? Alastair Cook."
Post update
The players have made their way to the centre to a great ovation and it will be left-arm seamer Trent Boult to bowl from the Nursery End, with two slips and a gully in place.
"I'm not sure what Cook will do but looking at English cricket, which has been surrounded in so much negativity of late, and this Test has been such a breathe of fresh air because of the way they have played. They have a chance to send a message about the way they are going to play, going forward.
"If you have a chance to win the game, take it. They had Sri Lanka nine-down here and weren't quite brave enough.
"I personally would try to hit 35 runs as soon as possible and then pull out. Try to get 84 overs at them. This New Zealand team will keep going until they are six down so they have a chance to win it."
"I believe a captain has duty to make the game interesting for his players. Then you find your better players get pulled out. You get to see who can handle it by deliberately putting them under pressure."

BBC Sport at Lord's
"While journalists desperately try to play catch-up after the surprising Trevor Bayliss news, there is excitement inside and outside Lord's, with fans queuing all the way up St John's Wood Road.
"This is a different crowd from the first four days, far removed from hoity members and socialites here as much for the champagne as the cricket. Families, youngsters with a day off school, any number of shirts from different counties. I saw only one man in a tie, whereas the rest of the match has been like a board meeting. Wonderful."
On the timing of England's declaration: "The fans are queuing back to St John's Wood station. England have played such good cricket in this match - don't fall at the last hurdle; don't waste it. Let's go out and entertain the crowd - let's put English cricket back on the map."
"England have a great opportunity now. Take the positive option and be prepared to lose in pursuit of trying to win. If a team scores 340 at over four an over on the last day of a Test match to win a game. All you can do is say well done to them."
Big crowd expected for final day
Fabulous to report that there are queues around the block waiting to get in today. There is free entry for Under-16's, the weather is good and this is the best cricket ground in the world so all the ingredients are there.
On when England should declare: "The way to do that is to get 30 or 40 quickly and give New Zealand that little carrot. I'd try to whack 35 quickly and then get out of there."
And in 2002, when Cook had barely put away his cassock from St Paul's Cathedral Choir, Nasser Hussain's England left New Zealand with a mammoth target of 550 at Christchurch, which they got within 98 of courtesy of a remarkable 222 by Nathan Astle in just 168 balls, containing 11 sixes.
Fourth-innings highlights
The great David Gower is ALWAYS reminded by his 'wise-cracking' colleagues in the commentary box of the 1984 Test against West Indies, before Cook was born, when he declared on the final morning and the Windies rattled off their target of 342 in 66 overs, Gordon Greenidge firing 29 fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 214 from 242 balls.
Declare your intentions
In terms of this fascinating Test match, the big question of course is when, or even if, Cook will declare. Naturally a cautious man, he will be wary of the firepower New Zealand possess, and there are always the old examples of amazing fourth innings exploits to make him even more wary.
"It is only a story. I'm not sure how much truth is behind it. Trevor Bayliss is a coach England were looking at last year before Peter Moores.
"I can see why England would look at some like Trevor Bayliss. He has done well. Would he be a good coach for England? His record suggests he would.
"He has worked with Paul Farbrace in Sri Lanka and he knows how it operates. But it would be a big surprise.
"I would go for Jason Gillespie. You look at his pedigree and what he has done in our game. He is part of our system and he was part of one of the great Australia sides. Either personality would be good."
Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?
And we have more speculation about the England coach's job too, with Australian Trevor Bayliss, the former Sri Lanka coach, reportedly offered the job.
England record in sight for Captain Cook
Yes, England captain Alastair Cook, who already has the most Test centuries by an England player, needs just 41 to eclipse his Essex mentor Graham Gooch's total of 8,900 Test runs and he will resume on 153, with his team 295 ahead at 429-6.
Whatever transpires, you are very welcome to our final day coverage of the first Test between England and New Zealand from Lord's.

Latest PostThank you and good night

"It was tactical for me to drop down the batting order [from five to six]. BJ Watling has done it for us before and we thought that if he could generate a partnership with Kane, the hitters like Corey Anderson and I could come in and have a realistic go at getting the target."
Captain's reaction

"His challenge will always be to work on his consistency but there is so much talent there and so much desire to win for England he'll only go from strength to strength. We've just got to keep backing him and he'll be a tremendous cricketer."

Bravo.

Who is Trevor Bayliss?

England won't mind New Zealand scoring boundaries while playing away from the body. Wood catches an edge off Watling's bat that sends the ball skipping past the skip cordon and down to the rope.

NZ 16-3 (Williamson 7, Watling 1)
Target 345
Debutant Mark Wood is brought into the attack for a pre-lunch burst. His pace is immediately up in the high 80's and he concedes just the two singles in an accurate opening over.

Fourth-innings highlights
