Paul Hawkins: Joe Root: "We've got an opportunity to do something special". That shot and Ian Bell's was pretty special.

Andy Turner: Dear Joe Root. Don't ever speak. Ever. Thanks.

Thomas Broadley: At this rate, Joe 'we can win this' Root and his pals will be trudging off home at lunch after a humiliating 300+ run defeat.

If any of you out there are in Joe Root Optimism mode ("we can win this"), the required run rate for an England victory has leapt to 4.80. Players ready to resume after drinks.

"This will be really taxing for Ben Stokes. I think he prefers the quicker bowlers at the start of his innings. Craig has got him out twice already in this series, when it wasn't spinning as much as this."

  6. Drinks breakpublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Craig is guided off his legs for two by Stokes. The players have earned some drinks.

Meanwhile, not even Yorkshire's Root is spared from the wrath of Geoffrey Boycott on TMS - though for his "we can win this" comments last night rather than for his second-ball duck.

"One of the things that New Zealand have said about Craig, when his expense has been questioned, is that he has bowled sides out in the fourth innings in the early stages of his career."

The Mighty Mojo: When you're best player hits one down short leg's jumper, you know the jig is up.

Jamie Holmes: Root out for a duck. This is going to be over by lunchtime.

  9. Eng 64-4 (target 455)published at 12:01 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Ben Stokes may have had to put his pads on in a hurry here, he joins Captain Cook who has lost three partners for the addition of one run. Cook pushes Southee for two, but looks calm in defence compared to the clatter of wickets at the other end.

New Zealand's tails are well and truly up, and with the three Yorkshire batsmen all gone, perhaps even a fiver for the locals to get in is looking a bit steep now.

"Joe Root only got one in the first innings, so this is his worst Test match - he's never scored less than four over two innings before."

"That is an amazing catch. It goes into the chest of Latham, who has the wit to fold his arms around it. The two men we thought might be able to deal with the off-spinner have gone in the same over. Joe Root looks flabbergasted, and England are in the mire."

  12. WICKETpublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Joe "we can win this" Root is the new batsman - and he hits his second ball straight to short leg where Tom Latham takes an incredible catch. The ball is smashed straight into his chest, Latham instinctively brings his arms together and holds on as he falls to the floor. A double wicket maiden - and a hammer blow to England's hopes of survival, never mind victory.

"The fielding change was only made the ball before. Bell must have known the fielder was there, he's not blind. It was off the face of the bat, a bad dismissal really. Craig has bowled really well all morning. Bell shakes his head, but I don't know at what - only his own stupidity really."

Great field placement - Kane Williamson is moved to leg slip at Craig's behest, and Bell obligingly nudges the ball to him. A good low catch, but is the Bell tolling for Ian?

The Warwickshire man's Test scores since his first-innings century in Antigua: 11, 1, 0, 0, 1, 29, 12, 1. I can hear the TMS inbox bulging with "drop him!" complaints already...

"It will be interesting to see how Bell plays the off-spin. Often he likes to get off the mark with a lofted drive, but there's a lot of rough there. It's not easy to trust the pitch."

Boult, with figures of 6-2-11-2 this morning (and 13-2-33-2 overall), takes a rest and New Zealand turn to his new-ball partner Tim Southee. Bell, facing for the first time, has a look before pushing a single to get off the mark.

Ballance's scores in this series: 1, 0, 29, 6. He'll hope his face fits better than Nick Compton, who was dropped after scoring 16, 15, 1 and 7 in a similar two-match series against NZ two years ago.

"Boult has bowled 41 balls to Ballance in this series. He has conceded just seven runs and got him out three times. Boult is now the joint leading wicket-taker in the series, with 13, level with Stuart Broad."

  19. Eng 61-2 (target 455)published at 11:44 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Ian Bell is the new batsman, but for now it's Cook facing Craig - and there's a big appeal as the skipper thrusts his pad forward. New Zealand think about a review, but decide against it - rightly so, as replays show the ball pitching outside leg stump, but it spun wickedly.

"It's a delightful piece of bowling. Although there hasn't been prodigious swing, Boult has been trying to move the ball away from left-handers - that one he pushed in towards Ballance on a full, almost yorker length. Boult is the bowler of the series for me."
