And on that note, with some rather big news breaking elsewhere in the world of sport, we're going to call a halt after a gripping series.

There's more cricket on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra tomorrow with commentary on Nottinghamshire v Sussex in the County Championship. As for New Zealand, they're in Aggers country this weekend for a one-day game with Leicestershire on Saturday, before the first ODI at Edgbaston a week today.

We hope you'll join us for that - in the meantime, keep enjoying your cricket, thanks for your company in this series and on the evidence of this last fortnight, don't let anyone tell you Test cricket is boring or dying. See you again soon.

  3. Review of the daypublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

It was a day which began with England confidently saying they could chase down 455, casually smash a couple of world records and win the game - and ended with a despairing review of an lbw decision.

Alastair Cook (56) and Jos Buttler (73) can hold their heads up high - Buttler's decision not to offer a shot to the ball by which he was dismissed notwithstanding - but it was spin which did the damage.

Mark Craig (3-73) did the damage when he removed Ian Bell and Joe Root within the space of three deliveries, while Kane "Goldenarm" Williamson popped up with the three crucial wickets of Cook, Stokes and Broad, all of whom were well set.

  4. One-day squad announcedpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

An interesting quote from national selector James Whitaker:

"A number of players involved in the recent World Cup including James Anderson, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell and Stuart Broad have been left of the squad for this series. It is important to point out that none of these players have been ruled out of playing a role for England in limited-overs formats in the future. This squad allows us to look at a group of players who have performed well both at county and England Lions level in recent years."

  5. One-day squad announcedpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

In fact, from that ODI XI in Ireland, James Taylor (who captained that game) is retained, as are Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, David Willey and Mark Wood - plus Sam Billings who was carrying the drinks that day.

Omitted - after one ODI in which three of them neither batted nor bowled - are Zafar Ansari, Jonny Bairstow, Tim Bresnan and James Vince. Ditto Lewis Gregory, who made the squad for Ireland but not the XI.

Not involved in the Ireland game, but called up for this series, are Eoin Morgan (who was at the IPL) and Buttler, Jordan, Plunkett, Root and Stokes who were in West Indies with the Test squad.

  6. Captain's viewpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

More from Brendon McCullum on Sky Sports: "The series was played in tremendous spirit. 1-1 is a great result, it's just a shame we haven't got another one or two Tests. Kane Williamson is one of those guys, you can be sure that he will get involved somehow. He has played a crucial role for us today, he was a bit of a gamble and it worked.

"BJ Watling was just outstanding, he's got tremendous character and even though he had the injury we wanted to play him, he's a guy you can build your team around."

England have named their one-day squad to face New Zealand. Sam Billings is the one player in the squad uncapped in ODIs, while Moeen Ali is rested, while there are a number of players who featured in the rain-hit ODI against Ireland, such as David Willey, get another chance to impress.

While Moeen will play for Worcestershire in preparation for the Ashes, there are also some other omissions - Anderson, Ballance, Bell and Broad are not selected.

Squad: Eoin Morgan (Middlesex, capt), Sam Billings (Kent), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Ben Stokes (Durham), James Taylor (Nottinghamshire), David Willey (Northants), Mark Wood (Durham).

Sam in Buckinghamshire: A real issue with the middle order at the moment with the entirety of the burden resting on young Joe Root's shoulders. He has been able to carry it at times this series but he is only human. Ballance looks a bit shaky and Bell has lost confidence. Possibly the result of a void in the head coach role? I might be wrong but it needs to be sorted pretty soon before the relentless Aussies come later in the summer.

  9. Captain's viewpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum: "It's an excellent five days to bounce back from Lord's. We had to force the pace and the guys bought into that. It was a very, very good Test series.

"Right throughout the series, I though our slip catching was brilliant. The energy in the field was even when we were behind in the series. It's not easy to bounce back having lost having played pretty well. They dominated for periods but we had to hang in and the ability to bowl last on what I thought was a very good cricket wicket was a great asset."

Fenners: So Cook has "no concerns" over Bell and Ballance. So what's point of any other batsmen trying to break into the team? Closed shop.

James: Nice to see an honest appraisal from Farbrace. Acknowledge the positives and negatives and look forward positively.

Howard Varney: Is there a tendency to think of New Zealand as "Australia-lite" meaning that they don't always get the respect they're due?

  11. Man of the seriespublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Alastair Cook, England's player of the series: "It was disappointing today. At halfway we were right in the game and we created opportunities. Every time we had a chance they took the game away from us with positive batting. When you're not on your A game, you get find out.

"Adam Lyth has looked solid at the top of the order and Ben Stokes has taken great strides - he played nicely at Lord's and here today too. Mark Wood has also added fire to our attack.

"It's been a challenge against their bowling attack but I'm pleased to score some runs. You need to judge well outside off and I've managed to do that, which is nice. Our batting has looked good. We could have batted out the day today but those four early wickets hurt us."

  12. Man of the seriespublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Trent Boult, New Zealand's player of the series: "It's a very special victory here, to turn it around from Lord's. We took a lot of positives from there. The batters played tremendously well here and we got it in the right areas with the ball. The conditions helped too.

"I was confident the work I'd done in the IPL would help me here and it's proved correct. I prefer bowling to left-handers and Tim [Southee] lines up the right-handers so it worked well."

"I think Australia have the balance of power before the Ashes. Their seam attack is very strong - Johnson, Starc, Harris - and their spinner, Nathan Lyon, is better than ours."

In all that kerfuffle, I neglected to let you know - left-arm seamer Trent Boult has won the NZ man of the series award, with Alastair Cook taking the England gong. (These are usually decided by the coaches of the opposing team).

"Alastair Cook's form is good. His footwork is excellent, his judgment of what to leave outside off stump is superb. He needs rest because it's a mental game; when your mind is tired, you make sloppy, bad decisions."

Alastair Cook and Brendon McCullum pose with the trophy - which is shared after the 1-1 draw. But both captains need to be congratulated for the spirit in which it was played. Will there be similarly good sportsmanship in the Ashes? Don't hold your breath.

"Gary Ballance's form and Ian Bell's form are big areas of concern. But the bigger problem is, who are you going to pick in their place? Does anybody stand out? You can give me these names, but do you think they're really good Test players? When people saw Joe Root and he wasn't in the side, we said, 'This kid will play for England.' But these other players, I don't see England on them."

More from England captain Alastair Cook on TMS: "What will I be doing with the next five weeks? I wouldn't mind a bit of time off, a week at home, but there's a couple of games I can play at Essex and work hard with Goochie."

  19. Man of the matchpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 2 June 2015

Man of the match BJ Watling: "There was a bit of rain around so it was pleasing to get the job done. I thought Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor they put the pressure back on them and to get 450 in the time that we did with help form the tail is very pleasing.

"Adapting to what the conditions are and the situation might be is crucial. I though Luke Ronchi had an outstanding debut. It was good to get the win."

More from England captain Alastair Cook on TMS: "If everyone's in form, you'd score 800. Ballance and Bell have had tough series, but they're wonderful players, it's not so long since they were scoring hundreds in West Indies. It's obviously a concern when they don't score runs, but I have no concerns about those two.

"You don't score 1,000 runs in your first year as a Test player, or 7,500 Test runs, without being a great player. We took some wonderful slip catches against India last year, we'll have to do some serious work before Australia as we know they make such a big impact on games."
