Summary

  • England win with 4.2 overs to spare

  • Sciver 66, Greenway 53

  • Aus 238-9: Perry 78, Blackwell 58

  • Brunt 3-48; four run-outs

  • England 2pts; Aus 0pts

  1. Eng 119-4 (Greenway 14*, Sciver 22*)published at 29 overs

Lanning continues to utilise her bowlers in short spells as she turns back to left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen, who opened both the bowling and the batting today. Greenway adds a single, Sciver unleashes a well-timed sweep which flies towards deep mid-wicket, and the boundary fielder's dive can only push the ball onto the rope.

Australia are whipping through their overs here, but - whisper it quietly - the England "worm" checking their run rate is still ahead of where Australia's was at this stage.

  2. Eng 113-4 (target 239)published at 28 overs

Greenway dabs Coyte for a single, and Sciver, for now, curbs her attacking instincts to push the score along with a single. England need 127 from 22 overs - or 132 balls if you prefer.

  4. Eng 111-4 (Greenway 12*, Sciver 16*)published at 27 overs

Ferling slings down a bouncer at Sciver, who attacks it with a cross bat and is nearly caught in the covers. Next ball is also short, but this time a more controlled shot brings the Surrey right-hander four through long leg.

  6. Eng 105-4 (target 239)published at 26 overs

The rain is holding off for now as England resume, and after four overs of spin from Osborne, Australia turn back to the medium pace of Sarah Coyte at the Old Pavilion End - and there's only a Sciver single from the over. If it did rain now... England would be about 15 short on Duckworth-Lewis.

There are so many people with stands named after them here at Taunton - Ian Botham, Andy Caddick, Marcus Trescothick, Colin Atkinson. I'd settle for a window named after me at The Oval.

I wonder if Meg Lanning knew about this possible rain when she won the toss. Normally if there's rain you bat second as it's easier to manipulate the score on Duckworth-Lewis.

    Eng 104-4 (target 239)

A few specks of rain around at Taunton - the TMS team, sitting outside the still-being-built media centre, are fearful for their electronic equipment if it gets worse. Greenway and Sciver nurdle a couple of singles, but the boundaries appear to have dried up.

We're at the halfway point. Players taking drinks. Who's your money on?

This partnership is going to be a bit like the one between Perry and Blackwell. These two are intelligent and experienced enough to do that. They just need to stick in for now - don't do anything before 35 overs.

  12. Eng 102-4 (Osborne 4-0-16-2)published at 24 overs

Osborne is charged with a no-ball for a high full toss, which the powerful Sciver blasts, baseball-style, to long-on. That brings up the hundred for England. Osborne, a canny off-spinner from New South Wales, nearly traps Greenway in front but is quickly through her over - although a wide extends it.

  13. Eng 97-4 (Greenway 9*, Sciver 8*)published at 23 overs

Perry (1-26 from seven) is replaced by Ferling - I've noticed this before from Australia, they tend not to use their two quickest bowlers in tandem. Just two singles from the over.

  15. Eng 95-4 (target 239)published at 22 overs

Greenway has played some memorable one-day innings for England, until now she's been at the pushing-and-nudging stage - but now finally unleashes one of her fluent reverse sweeps, swiping Osborne to the boundary for four.

Fair to say, I think, that Kristen Beams is not well-known in England. Yet she's been around for quite a while: not much difference in age between her and Alex Blackwell.

  17. Eng 90-4 (Greenway 4*, Sciver 6*)published at 21 overs

Perry continues for her seventh over - while there's the possible threat of rain, the fact that we're through 20 overs now means we have a match constituted, and shouldn't have to make use of the reserve day that has been scheduled for each of the ODIs. Four from the over.

If those clouds get any worse, I couldn't tell you who's ahead on Duckworth-Lewis - but Australia were 64-3 at this stage.

If you're going to play Georgia Elwiss as a batsman, at seven, without bowling her - why not play Jenny Gunn? Or Lauren Winfield?

  19. Eng 86-4 (target 239)published at 20 overs

Natalie Sciver is the new batter, she gets a few smiles back on the faces of the Taunton crowd as a back-foot cover drive brings her four off her first ball, before she helps a single to fine leg. Australia then think they've got Greenway lbw... but the ball disappears for a leg bye. Looked like it could have been going down leg.

The crowd have gone eerily quiet after the losses of Amy Jones and Sarah Taylor, just as the sun dips behind some ominous-looking clouds. There are nerves aplenty amongst the watching public, a proper Ashes atmosphere, it must be said.
