"Very smart from Shoaib Malik, Root had just got hold of the last one and was going nicely but it was an important breakthrough. They're just putting a squeeze on England's momentum."

Six and out! Joe Root goes the very next ball after putting Shoaib Malik over the rope. Looking for the slog-sweep again, not getting hold of it, straight to short mid-wicket, where Shahid Afridi takes a smart catch.

"Malik's bowling around the wicket, so the minute his line drifts onto leg stump, you have the room to go for it."

Blessed relief for England in the shape of Joe Root's slog-sweep. Clear the front pad, put Shoaib Malik over cow corner.

"Shahid Afridi is now the joint highest T20 international wicket-taker,, external level with Saeed Ajmal on 85. The top three are all Pakistan players - Umar Gul third on 83."

  6. Eng 68-2 (Afridi 3-0-12-2)published at 10 overs

Afridi back into the attack, whipping the ball down with an arm quicker than a hiccup. Sometimes back of a length and skidding on, sometimes loopy and full. Either way, England can't find the rope. Only four from it.

"The selection of this side suggests to me that England have a bit of depth, though I do think there are one or two question-marks over the bowling."

More spin, this time the offies of Shoaib Malik. Round the wicket to the right-handers as Eoin Morgan looks on with the knowing nod of a football manager. He's sitting next to Chris Jordan, both in luminous bibs. "I'm happy sitting out this game Chris, but you should be worried". Malik targets the legs in an excellent over. Only five from it. Pakistan just on top.

Afridi is thinking that spin is the way to go on this old deck, so goes to the part-time leggies of Ahmed Shehzad. So off the stuff he serves up is pretty dreadful, to be honest, half-trackers galore. It's so bad that England can't get hold of him. Mainly singles before Root releases the pressure with an iffy slog-sweep for four.

"The only thing I feel defensive about with Eoin Morgan's comments about the strength of domestic T20 cricket in England - if it's so poor, why doesn't he absolutely dominate? It's a common thought among the England team that they don't get enough practice."

Kevin Howells adds: "Vince and Billings did well yesterday - and which competition produced them?"

  12. Eng 48-2 (Afridi 2-0-7-2)published at 7 overs

Joe Root the new man, dropping his bat when he his hit on the pads first ball. England pegged back slightly in a very good atmosphere. Night, floodlights, noisy crowd.

"A bit of a mow towards mid-wicket from Jason Roy, but I suppose you're allowed to do that in T20. Quite an alert piece of keeping from Sarfraz, who juggled with the ball but got down well to catch it at the third juggle, by his angle."

This looks ugly, but it's a very, very good catch from Sarfraz Ahmed. Shahid Afridi strikes again, this time removing the dangerous Jason Roy. A swipe, an under-edge, Sarfraz juggles at least three times, then clings on. Good from the keeper, who celebrates like Alan Shearer.

Jos Buttler becomes only the fourth wicketkeeper to captain England in a full international match.

Alec Stewart was the last and most prolific (12 Tests & 39 ODIs between 1992 and 2003), Alan Knott did one ODI at Scarborough in 1976 and Rony Stanyforth, external captained in all four of his Tests in South Africa in 1927-28.

  16. Eng 45-1published at 6 overs

Tanvir, who must be related to Paul Adams (remember him? South Africa spinner - the frog in a blender), comes round the wicket to this pair of right-handers, spearing the ball in. Vince, another man with designer stubble, trades singles with Roy, who looks like he would have start Movember 2018 now.

I'll have what Jason Roy's on, please. Every dance seems to end with a big shot, this time with Tanvir lofted straight for four. I bet he looks good on the dancefloor.

James Vince the new man, immediately announcing his arrival by driving over the off side for four. That's the only runs from the over, mind, plus the wicket. Very good from Afridi.
