  1. Eng 21-2 (9 overs)published at 10:56 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

Steyn charging, snarling, staring. He's arrowing the ball in to Compton's stumps here - quick and straight with a hint of late inswing. The Comp Dog, external is up to the task - and alert to singles as he drops another one into the off side. A good contest, as they say.

  2. How's stat?!published at 10:56 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"Most consecutive Tests at an away venue without defeat: 18 - Australia at Lord's, 1934-2009; 14 - Eng at Auckland, 1930-2002; 11 - England at Durban, 1928- present."

  3. Eng 19-2 (Compton 2, Root 6)published at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

As if to make matters worse for England, the towering Morne Morkel takes over from Kyle Abbott. Steyn and Morkel - not a bad little attack...

Compton scampers off strike, Root collects a couple down the ground. It's tense.

Steve C: New personnel, same top order issues.

Nick Wall: The best bowler in the world against the best batsman in the world. Should be a good battle.

Rachel T: Calm down everyone, we all know England don't really get going until the scoreboard says 30-3.....

  5. Eng 16-2 (7 overs)published at 10:49 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

Joe Root is the new man for England - and off the mark with a steered four to a vacant third man. Steyn is greeted by a "Welcome back Dale!!!" on the electronic scorecard as he makes his way down to the fine-leg at the end of that over.

  6. 'That is a sucker ball'published at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2015

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"That is a poor shot at Test level. I'm sorry, but you will be lucky to have a Test career if you play shots like that. It is a teaser. You get balls like that 100 times, a 1000 times. It is a sucker ball. He is saying 'come on, have a dart at that'. I'm not going to judge him on that one innings but that is why I don't see Hales lasting long in Test cricket."

Steyn needed only four deliveries to strike after lunch. It's full and tempting. Hales, much like us with the chocolates on Christmas Day, can't resist. There's a faint edge and club wicketkeepers - let alone AB de Villiers - don't drop those. England in deep trouble.

  8. Play back under waypublished at 10:43

Aggers was right. The players are back out. Dale Steyn has the ball in his hand, that famous scowl is etched across his face, and Alex Hales is on strike.Justin Gouldingwill talk you through the afternoon session.

An update from Durban: the players will take lunch at 10:00 GMT, meaning we're unlikely to see any cricket for the next hour or so.

So we'll just nip off and start on the turkey sandwiches early. We'll be back shortly.

See you in a bit, folks.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"If Dale Steyn performs and has a good series there is a crack in the England batting order that can be exposed. But if Joe Root performs for England and everyone feeds off his confidence it will be close. It is too close to call."
