Graeme Richardson: 80+ lead for England is priceless. Let's finish them and bat them out of the game.

Richie O'HaraBeamand: ‏Well batted Dean Elgar! Superb effort, England in a great position from here though

Dale Cooper: I leave the room for 10 seconds and that's the innings over.

England took the last six South Africa wickets for 77 runs this morning. Stuart Broad started it with some uneven bounce, then Moeen Ali spun a web, before Steven Finn finished it with the new ball. If England get anything in excess of 200 in their second innings, it seems unlikely they will be beaten.

"Elgar stuck in there and played very selectively. But the real accolades go to England. What a terrific performance by the England bowlers. They've given their team a match-winning lead, no doubt about that. There's no way back for South Africa."

  8. SA 214 all outpublished at 09:54

Indeed it has been fantastic from Dean Elgar, who becomes only the sixth South African to carry his bat through a Test innings and the second since they returned to Test cricket in 1991. Imagine the heap the Proteas would be in without him.

Don't worry about extending the session, South Africa are all out. Steven Finn needed only three balls at Morne Morkel, who fended an off-stump riser to Joe Root at second slip, where a smart catch was taken. Farcically, the batsmen get to the boundary edge then are asked to wait for the front foot to be checked. No issue. South Africa are all out for 214 and England lead by 89 runs.

  11. SA 214-9published at 09:50

The giant Morne Morkel shuffles out as South Africa's last line of defence. He's opened for South Africa before (in an emergency) so not the worst number 11. With the Proteas nine down, this session can be extended even further, taking us to the three-hour mark.

"A beautiful teaser from Finn, right up there, full, outside off stump in that corridor. Piedt doesn't look a very good batsman - his feet were a long way from the pitch of the ball."

The second new ball does the trick, as it was always likely to against the tail. Dane Piedt is on his way, undone by the first delivery of the returning Steve Finn. Full, inviting the drive, with a meaty edge going through to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. England one ball away from batting again.

"He's big, he's bad, he's better than his dad," sing the Barmy Army of Stuart Broad, who gets steepling bounce to Piedt. The ball smashes in the batsman's gloves and almost drops on to the stumps. Another lifter has the jackknifing Piedt in a tangle, earning a stare from Broad. Fiesty stuff with the hard leather.

What does Elgar do here? Try to farm the strike? Defence for four balls, then what? Cook toys with the field and gets a fifth dot. "High class," says Jonny Bairstow. For the sixth ball, Elgar goes on the sweep and gets a couple. On comes the new ball - Dane Piedt is set to face it.
