The third umpire waits to bring the second new ball. Stuart Broad swings his arms. Moeen Ali to bowl over number 80.

By the way, we're enjoying your 12 Cricketing Days of Christmas. We're still a couple short of the full dozen, mind.

Dane Piedt is the man pushed out of the door to face the impending new nut. Looking again at the Steyn dismissal, he made contact with the ball at the very toe of the bat. If he'd middled it, it would have gone miles. With six catchers for company, Piedt survives three Ben Stokes deliveries.

"It was a predictable dismissal with the new ball two overs away. Moeen has bowled very flat in this over, and as soon as he tossed one up, Steyn's eyes lit up."

In the end, Dale Steyn just couldn't resist any longer. After defending like a yeoman for so long, he let the mask slip and unleashed an almighty swipe at Moeen Ali. He would have imagined the ball sailing long, straight and high, but instead could only see it soar directly up. Chris Woakes settled at mid-off, juggled, then hung on. England break through before the new ball.

"We often think of Dale Steyn as the lower-order hitter, but he's actually played very sensibly with Elgar down there at the other end."

Graeme Smith gets his wish, with Ben Stokes coming on for what will presumably be a couple of overs before the new ball is taken. The flame-haired Durham all-rounder hangs one outside the off stump of Steyn, who can't resist a dart. The edge flies past second slip, bringing up the 50 partnership.

"It surprises me that Alastair Cook isn't using Ben Stokes. He's a slippery customer with the ability to knock someone over."

Not out. Not even close to the inside edge, or the glove. Vindicated, umpire Rod Tucker swings his arms like a man doing the Charleston. England will at least get their reviews topped up in four overs, but they still need to break this sticky partnership.

Now then. Do England have it? Alastair Cook is convinced enough for an instant review. Steyn the batsman. Has be bat-padded to short leg?

A brilliant reaction from Dale Steyn. Elgar calls him for the shortest of singles, causing the big, mean fast bowler to get all undignified in a dive for his ground. As the dust rises and his helmet covers his eyes, Steyn rolls on to his back, looks back to Elgar and shakes his head. "I've bowled them out, I'm getting the runs and now this clown is calling me for daft singles."

"When Dale Steyn does come down the wicket and have a whoosh, he leaves nothing behind. Every bit of sinew in his body is tensed, and when he gets it right, he hits the ball a long way."

  15. SA 200-7 (partnership 44)published at 09:13

Like a man staring at the Christmas sherry, Dale Steyn can resist no longer. A dance and a heave at Moeen Ali, the sort of shot you see in the Great Snoring Farmer's Sunday League. Somehow it goes to third man for four. If he's connected, it would have landed in the sea. And again! A couple over the leg side. 200 up.

Woakes slides in, all pumping elbows and kicking heels, the sort of babyface that would be useless in Movember. He pushes the ball across leftie Elgar, gets no hint of movement back and is taken for two, then a single through point. New ball due in seven. England could do with it.

Still Moeen, who has been nullified slightly in the past couple of overs. Elgar remains hunched and busy, Steyn upright and obdurate. "Round boys" is the cry from behind the bat at the end of the over. It's been sedate after a three-wicket first hour.
