    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"The extra pace of Ben Stokes and Steven Finn has been the difference. You don't mind facing bowlers of the speed of Stuart Broad and James Anderson on a true track."

  2. SA 81-1 (run-rate 2.78)published at 11:19

James Anderson, not yet back to his best after that calf injury, shares duties after lunch, drawing an edge from Dean Elgar that bounces past Stokes at gully and runs for four. Jimmy looks grumpy. Even grumpier than usual. Do you watch the Apprentice? Anderson and Claude Littner could probably have a decent grumpy contest.

    Henry Blofeld
    BBC Test Match Special

"Hashim Amla was beaten on the outside edge a couple of times this morning and, on another day, would have been out. But he's still there and his cover drives were the stand-out shots of the morning."

  4. SA 76-1 (Elgar 29, Amla 17)published at 28 overs

Stokes has a bandage on his right arm and a sleeve tattoo on his left. Part mummy, part rock star. He slips in under a heavy Johannesburg sky, over-pitching for Amla to ease into a post-lunch drive for a couple. One angled in hits Amla on the pads and causes Stokes to appeal. Leggy and high.

Sam Roberts: I have put my 'out of office' on so no one emails me while I'm monitoring the cricket.

Adam Becket: I'm in the research room of the Imperial War Museum whilst listening to the cricket, it is rather distracting.

The spectre of Dale Steyn looms as England stride back to the middle. Steyn can wait, England's first problem is getting through the likes of Elgar and Amla - South Africa's sticky pair.

    Ben Stokes has the ball...

Good? I'm not sure about that, but thank you very much.

What to make of that morning session? A bit of a phoney war? South Africa will probably have enjoyed their lunch more - England need to improve.

We're loving your 'do not disturb' images from work. Are there any white van drivers who fancy doing something similar in the dirt of their back door?

'Do not disturb, I'm listening to Test Match Special'.

Anyway, time for me to go: over to you, Stephan Shemilt. He's good, you know.

Jon, are you in an exam there? How are you managing to get that one through?

I remember my exams, you only had to blink and there'd be an army of teachers bundling you out of the door and accusing you of cheating.

    Good on you!

In other exam-related chat, I once did an exam while England were playing a World Cup game against Nigeria. At full-time, the observer told everyone the score. Scenes.

Geoffrey summed it up perfectly there. Stokes is certainly a better and more effective bowler than his career stats suggest. He currently has 48 wickets at an average of 41.

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"England will say to themselves, 'it was OK; it wasn't a special morning'.

"Jimmy Anderson looked rusty - he didn't get the line and length together. Stuart Broad didn't have the rhythm, this morning. Something wasn't right. You can't always tell why. The best bowler was Finn.

"Stokes will be a far better bowler in two or three years. He's skiddy but there's not enough control or discipline yet. That should come with maturity and experience."
