The Dane Vilas situation exemplifies why cricket is the best sport there is, and why so many people don't understand it - in what other sport could the number one team in the world turn up without enough players? Especially as the instinctive reaction isn't outrage (by SA fans) or scorn (by everyone else) but just a little giggle.

Steven Finn ended that session with a beauty which almost shaved Hashim Amla's groping outside edge. However, the batsmen troop off feeling pretty pleased with their position in the game. It could be a long afternoon for England.

There's a lot to like about an opening batsman who is 20-odd not out at lunch. Dean Elgar is going to be a rock for South Africa. He's already being spoken about as a future Test captain. Nuggety.

    Shall we have some lunch?

Ben Stokes aims one at Hashim Amla's throat but the right-hander stands tall and swats the ball for four as though he's flicking a pesky fly away from his face. Timing.

What's the verdict as we head towards lunch? I think this is a belter of a wicket. There's runs in it for the batsmen, but the bowlers are always in the game. Always. England just haven't adapted well enough to the different conditions.

I was the only member of my team to be present at 1pm for a league game last season. My captain instructed me (by phone) to win the toss and bat.

  10. SA 68-1 (Stokes 4-0-8-1)published at 24 overs

There's a battle developing between Ben Stokes and Hashim Amla.

The bowler sends down a jaffa which beats the outside edge. The batsman creams four through the covers.

Anything Ben can do, Hashim can do better. He can do anything better than you.

No he can't. Yes he can. No he can't...

SA 64-1 (SA won toss)published at 23 overs

Ouch! Dean Elgar wears one from Steven Finn on the belly. Enough to knock the wind out of a man.

He gets his revenge with a crashing four back down the ground. Finn stands with his hands on his head. Elgar is now averaging 112 in the series.

Ben Stokes goes for just one - although it is a quick single. I'm not sure he likes being on the wrong end of a tip and run.

They say magic is all in the sleight of the hands, and there's something quite magical about Hashim Amla when his rubber wrists guide a cover drive to the boundary. Beautiful. Elegant. Class.

Stuart Broad, the bowler on the receiving end, might not agree but it was sublime.

Ben Stokes is just brilliant. He muscles in to the crease with bandaged arms, wincing and grunting as he follows through. Then when he walks back to his mark, there's a slight cockiness in his strut. Like he might bang shoulders with you if you get in the way and make eye contact. A fearsome foe for the South Africans.

He appeals loudly for lbw against Hashim Amla, but it's again sliding down leg, and then he finds the same batsman's outside edge but the ball drops short of second slip. A superb over.
