  1. SA 29-0 (Van Zyl 13, Elgar 8)published at 13 overs

Since 2000, seamers have taken 397 wickets at the Wanderers compared to just 55 for the spinners.

    Good luck, Moeen.

It's tidy stuff from England's off-spinner. Two from it.

  2. SA 27-0published at 12 overs

Moeen's been brought into the attack. Interesting.

Hemmings: last season we started an away match 1 down and it transpired our 11th man got lost following signs of 'eggs for sale'.

  4. SA 27-0 (Elgar 8, van Zyl 11)published at 12 overs

Dane Vilas is in the house! He's arrived. The longest commute of the morning has reached a happy conclusion.

Mind you, he might want to turn around when he settles down to watch his first over and Steven Finn gets one to take off and slide past the groping outside edge of Dean Elgar. A brute of a delivery.

"This pair have played well - they have justified the decision by AB de Villiers to bat first. You've got to get through the first 20 overs of the new ball and it will become easier and easier."

Lee: Every Tuesday morning I do Lund in Sweden to Central London. 1050km including car journeys either end.

Tony: I commuted in a sleeper train (without a bed) from Aviemore, arrived in Euston at 8am & went straight to work: only 870km, alas.

  7. SA 27-0 (Anderson 5-2-8-0)published at 11 overs

"CAAATCCHH!" shout the England fielders as Stiaan van Zyl fences at one bowled from round the wicket by James Anderson, but it drops short of Nick Compton at point. Are England too deep?

I was playing in the same team as my brother. The opposition batted first and then it was our turn to bat. I was opening the innings and my brother was number 11. Obviously he thought he had plenty of time to go to the toilet. However, when he returned to the match he was not only horrified that we were all out for 11, but also that he had been timed out.

  9. SA 27-0 (Elgar 8, van Zyl 11)published at 10 overs

James Taylor seems so far back at short leg. He's almost crouching down at short mid-wicket. Any further back and he'd need to catch a bus to anything which loops up off the bat. Dean Elgar continues to look solid - relishing playing the long innings a la Graeme Smith.

    Nope. No chances. Nothing.

  12. SA 25-0 (SA won toss)published at 9 overs

There's a massive, imposing stand at the Wanderers which is nothing more than row after row of corrugated iron. The kind of seating which you'd expect in a school gym. James Anderson still can't make a breakthrough. I suspect he'll be given a breather after his latest set of six.

"It's like commentating from a high-rise set of flats up here. I love this venue - the conditions are good and the pitch always has something in it."

  14. SA 19-0 (Elgar 6, van Zyl 9)published at 8 overs

    Steven FinnImage source, Rex Features

Steven Finn is, indeed, brought into the attack. After a loosener, he cuts Dean Elgar in half with a ripper. He's been England's best bowler on tour and is slowly usurping James Anderson, in particular, as England's go-to man. He's not there yet... but he's not far away.

A lesson for Finn is that when he over-pitches, the ball is punched back at him hard. When it's dragged back a little, he's in the game. In a big way.

  15. The longest commute?published at 08:59

It's about 1,000km from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg - Dane Vilas' trip this morning after being called up to replace the injured Quinton de Kock. Can anyone beat that for a morning commute?

We've no idea if Dane Vilas is at the ground yet, but it's all very village isn't it?

South Africa have started an international sporting contest with 10 men, and their 11th bloke is hundreds of miles away.

It's like a Saturday morning down at your local club. "Give Mick a ring. I think he said he's available. Tell him we'll buy him a few pints after the game."

James Anderson continues to toil. Two runs and no wickets. Time for a change while the ball is still fairly new?

  18. SA 16-0 (Broad 3-1-8-0)published at 6 overs

    Stuart BroadImage source, Rex Features

Stiaan van Zyl is fighting hard and when Stuart Broad bowls a half-tracker, he punches four through mid-wicket. Broad, by the way, is looking a little red-faced and short of breath. Is the thinner air taking its toll?

    Dot Cotton in Eastenders

I'm sure I've just seen Dot Cotton in the posh boxes behind the bowler's arm. It's probably not her, but you never know.

James Anderson continues to bowl a tidy, nagging line and length but still no wickets. England would have hoped for at least one by now.
