That's the fifty. Joe Root, the new bowler, gifts Bavuma a full toss outside leg stump and Bavuma sweeps for the single which takes him to his landmark. Well batted, Temba. Admittedly, the match situation was hardly one of peril, but he has batted as comfortably as anyone in this match.

"If South Africa can get another 60 or 70 and a lead of 400 it gives them more than enough runs to play with if Kyle Abbott is not fit to bowl."

Bavuma almost gone for 49, pulling Stokes inches short of a shortish mid-wicket. Puffed-out cheeks all round for batsman, bowler and fielder.

Macca: On another note, apart from Stokes and Woakes, have England had any other rhyming team-mates?

  5. SA 198-4 (lead by 331)published at 71 overs

South Africa are scoring almost by stealth, singles garnered almost at will and punctuated by the odd beautiful stroke from Bavuma. This time it's a pull off Woakes, who is wicketless after 13 overs. Change of bowling. It's Stokes Time.

Former South Africa wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"Amla on 85, Bavuma on 45. Once they reach their milestones one would expect them to up the ante and really push on."

  7. When will South Africa declare?published at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2016

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa will assess any decision on declaration at tea. There are too many factors. They may be uncertain about England's second innings. Kyle Abbot is possibly injured, and Kagiso Rabada did 29 overs in the first innings. That is a hell of a lot for a 20-year-old. Unless you're used to it, it can sap you.

"There are plenty of overs left today but I don't think they'll make 400."

England persist with Moeen. Two singles off the over. The second new ball is 10 overs away. Will Engalnd take it? Does anyone care? Are you even awake?

Ooof! Right off the end of Bavuma's bat as one from Woakes keeps low. He might want to chalk his cue. Then little more than a half-volley is driven gloriously through cover for his fifth boundary. Bavuma could write the MCC coaching manual.

If you were intrigued by Test Match Special's interview with visually impaired England cricketer Hassan Khan earlier, you're not the only one, it really was fascinating stuff.

Fancy finding out a bit more about the visually impaired game? So did England's ODI and Twenty20 captain Eoin Morgan - see how he does taking on Khan and his team-mates by clicking here.

  12. SA 185-4 (Moeen 15-3-56-0)published at 68 overs

Sloppy from Moeen, a full toss stroked by Bavuma through a huge gap at extra cover. Deserved nothing less. The little one has cruised to 39, the hairier Amla has 82 and the fifth-wicket stand is worth 79.

Jon Dunn: Not sure what the selectors have learnt about Woakes that they (& everyone else) didn't already know? He's just not good enough.

I wonder if AB de Villiers has the BBC Weather app on his smartphone. In fact, I don't think players are allowed to use their phones in the dressing room, so can't imagine he can even check the weather. Or set his central heating to come on tonight. Woakes steady. Then again, that's part of the problem.

Only two off that over from Moeen. South Africa scoring in fits and starts at the moment. A glance at the weather forecast for tomorrow suggests they might want to get a wriggle on...

Andy Cook: Understand why they picked Woakes (pecking order and all that) but hard to think that Footitt would have bowled worse than him.

I can't say I envy Woakes. Armed with a solitary slip, his team trailing by 300, bowling at two batsmen who look like they could play in their sleep, with the critics already lining up to lay into your Test credentials. Amla thrashes him on the up through a packed cover field. 'Booming' is the best way to describe that shot.

"South Africa have had to play the way they are because of that early spell when England made it really uncomfortable for them.

"They know they're not going to bowl England out for 150 on this wicket. They will want quite a few more runs yet."
