Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"For any young cricketers watching, Hashim Amla has given a real exhibition of a trigger movement that really maximises his life as a batsman. When the ball is released he's already in a nice wide stance, so he can easily move towards the ball or hop back. He hardly has to move, and it buys him extra time."

Alex Lipscombe: If England are to have any hope in winning, Cook and Root will have to put a hell of a shift in.

Drinks break - SA 166-4 (lead by 299)published at 63 overs

If you'd just rocked up at the ground today, not knowing the match situation, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was the first innings. South Africa, armed with a near 300-run lead, in no rush whatsover. Chris Woakes into the attack. Bavuma content to block. Time for drinks.

McClenaghan faces eye surgerypublished at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2016

Hashim Amla has had a few painful raps on the glove in his innings but nothing compared to New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan, who will need surgery on a fractured eye socket after being hit by a ball which squeezed through his grille in a one-day international win over Pakistan.

What do I see here? Amla on the attack. Broad drops short and the Beard is on it as quick as a flash, swivelling and pulling for four behind square. He's moved serenely to 73. An exhibition that England's batsmen will do well to follow.

Shaun May: Yes rubbing an area of pain does serve a purpose. Melzack Wall gate control theory of pain, external.

Hassan: (Re 11:53) Rubbing creates new stimulation which helps to detract from the pain signals being sent to the brain and reduces the pain felt.

However many South Africa finally set England, the tourists face one heck of a tough task to save/win this Test. For now, they're playing the waiting game stalling South Africa as best they can. What's the equivalent in real life. Interview tomorrow? Big presentation? Meeting scheduled with the boss who doesn't like you? Let me know if you've got something in the calendar you're dreading.

Macca: Wonder what damage Adil Rashid would have done here. More than Woakes for certain.

  9. SA 158-4 (lead by 291)published at 60 overs

Broad back on in place of Anderson. What England would give for a reprisal of his Jo'burg heroics right now... Zinc smeared across his nose, there's no shortage of effort, or accuracy, but no reward.

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa have historically always been a cautious side, but they are 290 runs in front on a pitch that is going up and down - and spinning.

"They deserve to win this match and won't want to regret missing the opportunity. If they put England in with 100 overs to save the game, that's only two or three partnerships required."

  11. SA 157-4 (Amla 67, Bavuma 28)published at 59 overs

Lovely stuff from Bavuma, who rocks back to cut late, then sweeps again to bring up the fifty stand. The atmosphere in the field and around the ground is muted. South Africa grinding, England stalling.

The grass bankings around the ground looking a little sparse today. Plenty of room to stretch your legs. Tidy from Anderson - and some nip off the seam. Bavuma takes one on the outside of the knee and gives it a little rub, much like your Mum used to do when you banged your elbow. Does that actually serve any purpose? I've always wondered.

  15. SA 150-4 (lead by 283)published at 57 overs

More urgency from Bavuma, paddling Moeen deftly for four to fine-leg. Anderson, having just finished his over, gives chase and ends up with a face full of boundary marker for his efforts. Then it's time for the Bavuma pull - hit hard and flat. Nine off the over.

  16. Postpublished at 11:48 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2016

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"South Africa look like they're playing as if they think England can still win this game. It's attritional stuff. They've just got to get on with it. England will be loving the run rate being this low; they'll just want to take as many overs out of the game as they can."

  17. Postpublished at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2016

    Mark Boucher
Former South Africa wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"You feel England might be missing a trick here. They've really loaded the off-side field forcing Jimmy Anderson to limit his deliveries, when you really want to be bowling straight on a wicket like this."

  18. Bavuma on 14published at 55.4 overs

    SA 140-4 (lead by 272)

Close, but the inside edge saves Bavuma as Anderson nips one back to rap him on the front pad.

Dom Ford: Amla has to be 'Player Of The Series'. Since the second Test he has been incredible!

Ashley Paul: Amla has always been a majestically bearded thorn in English sides.

  20. SA 139-4 (lead by 272)published at 55 overs

Spin in the form of Moeen Ali. Jonny Bairstow's appeal for a stumping is given short shrift by the umpire, then Bavuma plays and misses as he tries to repeat the back-footed force which brought him a couple earlier in the over. South Africa's lead edging ever higher.
