Tim Williams: If Chris Jordan never played for England ever again, I think we would all be okay with that...

Nick Harris: How is Chris Jordan anywhere near this England cricket team. Almost as baffling as when Jade Dernbach had a run in the side.

Peter Goodwin: Stop, stop he's already dead!

  2. SA 78-0published at 5.4 overs

It's just not a contest any more. No blame to Stokes here, he's just driven through the covers by the sublime Amla. Only six off four balls, though. Miserly compared to the rest of the rabble in pink.

Sejanus: This England rabble will be home soon. They can't do the basics.

Mark Turvill: England doing an exhibition in how not to bowl in limited overs cricket. Poor is far too nice for this rubbish.

Jeremy Smith: I've never seen anything like this... England out the tournament after one game and five overs?

  4. SA 72-0published at 5 overs

It would have been too good to be true. Amla jams the ball into the ground and it is taken at point. A quick look by the TV ump tells us it was a bump ball. Move on. Next into the slaughterhouse is Ben Stokes...

    SA 72-0

A dot ball! Or is it? England might even have a wicket. Third umpire called. Either way, let's celebrate...

"A hideous start for England. It's the worst start I've ever seen from England in a limited-over game. It's just been abysmal."

"OK. It's humiliating. But what can Chris Jordan do? His best bet is to bowl fast. He's tried two slower balls, and they've both been hit."

  8. SA 72-0published at 4.5 overs

Four more. I have no words.

  9. 6 runs

    SA 68-0published at 4.4 overs

This is absolutely remarkable. Third man is up in the ring, so Jordan bowls a slower ball miles outside the off stump and is late cut for four. Bowl to your field! Next ball, a horrible half-tracker, pulled for six. 4-4-4-6. Some of the worst bowling you’ll see. Club stuff. Not even that good. Village.

  10. SA 58-0 (Amla 18, De Kock 40)published at 4.2 overs

Now it’s too straight. Leg stump, flicked for four. I feel for Eoin Morgan. He might have to bowl himself.

"It's kind of testing, this. It really couldn't be going any worse for England. They are already hanging on by their fingernails. It's a nightmare start."

  12. SA 54-0published at 4.1 overs

New bowler, same outcome. Chris Jordan, wide of off stump, flayed for four by Amla. England could be chasing 300 here.

  13. dropped catch

Amla dropped on 9published at 4 overs

    SA 50-0

Did I say England were awful? This is abysmal from Reece Topley. Not only has he bowled like a drain, now he’s dropped a dolly. Amla to mid-off, Topley has to move to his left, gets both hands to it, shells it. All going wrong for England. Next ball, De Kock cuts for four. 50 up in 23 balls.

  14. SA 45-0published at 3.3 overs

No bearded brotherly love from Amla, who twice pounces on width to go through the off-side for boundaries. South Africa brilliant. England awful.

"It's gone a long way. Quinton de Kock looks about 12. He's not bulging with muscles but he's got a wonderful touch and real audacity. Remember after the first over South Africa were 2-0. Who'd be Eoin Morgan? Any talk about early swing has gone straight out of the window."

  16. SA 37-0published at 3 overs

Why oh why did the England selectors leave out the highest rated bowler in Test cricket (Stuart Broad)? He's not even in the squad.

Would South Africa leave out Dale Steyn? No way.

That's why England are going to lose again. The selectors haven't got a clue what they are doing and Morgan is stuck with a load of inexperienced bowlers.

And another! De Kock inside-out over cover for six more! What a hit, but allowed to do it by the length of Willey, who screams into the ground. De Kock has 36 from 15 balls!

  19. SA 31-0published at 2.5 overs

Brilliant from De Kock! He follows up the maximum with four through mid-on. Willey adjusts the line, so the left-hander simply carve through third man for four more. There’s fielders running everywhere. England’s bowlers can’t land it in the right postcode.

George Gray: I'll take three overs of Root over another three from Topley.

Theo Bowyer: Topley is too hittable... You've got to have more subtlety at this level.

Jason Thomas: Do you only receive negative tweets from English 'fans,' or do you only publish negative tweets?..
