I have absolutely no idea what BBC Newcastle's Mr Emmerson is on about either!

No sooner had he passed three figures, Alastair Cook is out.

Jack Taylor traps him in front lbw, but it's a mightily impressive start to the season for the England Test skipper.

    Essex 224-1 v Gloucestershire 262

BBC Radio Gloucestershire's Bob Hunt at Chelmsford:

"With respect to Gloucestershire, Alistair Cook's 52nd first-class century would not count as his most arduous, but he dispatched the many loose deliveries with aplomb.

"Funnily enough, it was his first fifty against the visitors let alone his first ton, and the feeling is he would want to be there at the end of the day.

"Oh, and Tom Westley has three figures as well.

100 FOR ALASTAIR COOKpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    Essex 223-1 v Gloucestershire 262

We've been debating whether Alastair Cook is England's greatest ever batsman and now he has a century in his first County Championship innings of the season.

The England Test skipper hits Kieran Noema-Barnett for his 16th boundary to bring up his hundred off 182 balls.

Tom Westley also has an unbeaten century at the other end with the pair putting on 221 for the second wicket.

Lovely stuff if you're an Essex fan. Not so much for Gloucestershire supporters.

"Bad light at Northampton and a lot of heavy cloud around the ground.

"Terrific innings from Ben Duckett, but he has been badly dropped twice today both from the bowling of Ajmal Shahzad.

"Good to see Matt Machan at the ground after being hit on the head fielding yesterday, whether he will bat remains to be seen."
