Ooohhh, good from Pradeep, moving the ball away from the grope of Moeen. There is movement out there, something for the bowlers, so England will hope that remains for later in the day. Plenty in the ground now, the stands that Pradeep is running towards are jam-packed. Top day for watching cricket.

Good from Woakes, the shot of the day so far. Too wide from Eranga and cut through point quicker than a hiccup by the Warwickshire all-rounder. This partnership is now worth 39, with both men having had a life. Another half an hour and England could be out of sight.

An aerial shot tells me that this ground is very close to housing estate. It would be excellent to live that close to a Test ground - just nip across the road to watch some cricket. Any ground, in fact. Do let me know if your house is next to/on a cricket ground. Pictures welcome. Nuwan Pradeep, all stubble and flowing black locks, bounds in to Woakes, who block-drives through the covers for three.

Here's that life Chandimal gave to Woakes. You know when you say "my gran could have caught that"? This time, she really could. Eranga, the unfortunate bowler, continues to pound in, met by the straight bat of Moeen Ali. Maiden.

    "There's been a delay."

Tufnell: "I think it was our window. I think we've been told off."

"How can our window possibly be behind the bowlers' arm? That's absolutely ridiculous. Surely it can't have been us."

  9. Eng 327-6published at 11:21

On behalf of the Test Match Special team, I must apologise for the delay in play. Woakes is distracted by something going on behind the bowler's arm. It turns out he wants the window of the TMS box closed. Charles Dagnall does the honours, encasing Aggers and Phil Tufnell behind the glass. Come on, Aggers....

Simon Goodall: I think the Sri Lankans have put too much butter on their toast this morning. Dear me, shocking fielding.

Alan Baird: Now that was total lack of concentration.

Andrew Lawton: Two drops in first 10 minutes of play... England's top order must be fuming.

We talked about how well Sri Lanka fielded yesterday, but now they've come out like a team who slept with their hands in butter. The two slips are not bothering to talk to Chandimal. He's been sent to Coventry.

"He didn't even get a paw on it. You talk about the great catches you see all summer, well that was the worst miss. It was terrible."

Oh no. This is a dolly. Dinesh Chandimal has dropped an absolute goober. I say dropped, but he's barely gone for it. Thick edge from Chris Woakes, the keeper doesn't have to move, but he doesn't even get a glove on it. Has he not seen it? Is he still worried about the blow to the thumb he took last night? That's one of the worst misses you'll see by a Test keeper.

"No feet by Moeen, he's gone to punch it off the back foot, it's found the outside edge and been dropped at gully. The pitch may have firmed up a bit."

Down! Sri Lanka caught well yesterday but Dimuth Karunaratne has shelled one here. Moeen Ali is the man to get a life, fencing at Pradeep, edging towards Karunaratne at a second gully position. The fielder moves to his left, shoulder-high, but the ball bursts through. Very catchable.

Shaminda Eranga, wicketless into his 20th over, shares morning duties, angling the ball into Chris Woakes, who shuffles across and plays around a big front pad. Nice buzz in Durham, that familiar Test match hum.

"That was an absolute toe-end from Moeen for four. Not great cricket all round."

  20. Eng 317-6published at 11:03

I think we'll see the game move on apace this morning. England will look to score quickly and thus give Sri Lanka the chance for the wickets they need. A swipe from Moeen takes the toe end of the bat and runs past the grasp of first slip for four. Fancy dress day in Durham, naturally. There's some umpires, the Mario brothers and a banana.
