Charles Dagnall: "But James Anderson's still got his pads on, so they're carrying on."

Lawrence is not wrong - Mathews looks about as upbeat as a Frenchman who's about to be led to the guillotine. Eranga ticks past his own unwanted century - 100 wicketless runs conceded. Even Finn is throwing the kitchen sink now - a big heave connects only via the glove, but the ball balloons over the slips to safety. And that's the 50 partnership, off just 70 balls.

Both of Moeen's Test tons have come at number seven - is he batting too low at eight? You could certainly make that case, but it's hard to seeing him staying at seven when Ben Stokes comes back. The Bearded One absolutely flogs Herath through mid-wicket for another four - Mo is motoring now. Finn heaps further indignity on Sri Lanka by caressing Herath through the covers for two.

"Sri Lanka, as good as they were in the field yesterday, have been awful today. You should have taken that one 10 times out of 10."

Well, that just about sums up Sri Lanka's miserable day in the field. Sri Lanka finally decide to try and get Moeen out, Eranga bangs one in short and Moeen top-edges a hook, but Milinda Siriwardana completely misjudges it and spills the ball over his shoulder. To add insult to injury, Mo flays Eranga through straight midwicket and then tennis-shots for four more over cow corner. Sri Lanka are sinking here...

"Three of England's five Test centuries this year have come from number seven batsmen - Jonny Bairstow got the other two."

"Well played, Moeen Ali. They're carrying on, which surprises me. He's played nicely and also had a bit of luck this morning when he was dropped in the gully."

There it is! Moeen smites Pradeep over the top for a one-bounce four to go to his second Test match hundred. Off comes the helmet, a big smile on Moeen's face and rightly so. Huge ovation on the balcony too. Very well batted - he's accelerated nicely after reaching his 50.

England pinch another two when Moeen takes on the less-than-gazelle-like Rangana Herath at long-off. Take Herath on twice at your peril though! This time Moeen picks him out much closer in and tries to scamper a single - Herath gathers and unleashes but the ball whistles past the timbers. Moeen was gone if he hit...

"I think Sri Lanka bowled well this morning, but let themselves down with dropped catches. The pitch has quickened up a bit and it moved around. There will be something in it for England - Sri Lanka will have to battle hard."

Angelo needs to get a grip on this. Moeen bunts one down the ground and trots through for two to retain strike. Into the nineties now. And again! Moeen is farming the strike like Farmer Giles, on his farm, sitting atop a combine harvester. Finally Steven Finn sees some action - Nuwan Pradeep, needing one more for his first-ever five-for, gets a ball at him but can't beat the Watford Wall.

Moeen immediately whips one through the off side for four - 11 away from the ton. Then there's a lovely flowing drive through the off side, but they don't run as there's a fielder there and a single would bring Steven Finn on strike. Nobody wants to see that - apart from the Sri Lankans of course. Or maybe they don't? This is bizarre - Angelo Mathews doesn't bring the field in for the final ball, allowing Moeen to blithely stroke into the off side and trot a carefree single. Do the Sri Lankans want to finish this off?

Thank you Steph. Shaminda Eranga has the ball, Moeen Ali is on strike, needing 15 more for his second Test century. Let's get on with it, shall we?

Right then, the afternoon session is almost set to begin. More England runs, or Sri Lanka to mop up the tail? Here's James Gheerbrant to find out...

  18. Ask the Umpirepublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 28 May 2016

The scores are level, a batsman's on 99 and the bowler bowls a no-ball which is hit for four. Does he get his hundred?

"No, the match is over the moment the no-ball is bowled."

  19. Ask the Umpirepublished at 13:34

A batsman hits the ball in the air towards the stumps, it grazes the bowler's fingers, hits the stumps (with the non-striker out of his ground) and loops up into the air and is caught at mid-on. Who's out?

"The catch takes precedence over the run-out, so the striker is out. Same as bowled takes precedence over lbw."
