Oh yes! Howls of "Roooooot" as Joe moves to his 10th Test hundred. Worked to the wide mid-on fence off Yasir, a 10th Test ton and first against Pakistan for the England vice-captain. How do you feel about batting at number three, Joe?

Jonathan France: Think Vince will be lucky to play in the next Test. Out in the same way too often for Test cricket. He's had his chance. NEXT!

Jamie: James Vince is nowhere near good enough to be playing test match cricket. Get rid.

Richard Haines: Monumental kiss of death from Steve Bland ends a torrid innings for Vince. Please don't talk up any other batsmen Blandy.

If this was club cricket, Vince would be getting some awful chirp along the lines of "seatbelts, this lad can't drive". The replays don't do him any favours. It's so wide from Rahat, Vince nowhere near the pitch of the ball. Gary Ballance is the new man, his Yorkshire team-mate Root sitting on 98.

That's a poor shot. He played it at Lord's and got out - and he's already played it here. Does he not have a plan?

He seems to play some very elegant shots, and that's why he makes people purr when watching him. But sooner or later he needs to string some scores together.

Oh, James. Do I need to tell you the stroke he is playing? Do I need to tell you the delivery? Pushed full by Rahat Ali, across the right-hander. Big drive, little tickle behind. Eternal wait while Vince thinks about reviewing, but then he drags himself off. He's 18-2 in that knock and big questions remain over his long-term future as a Test batsman.

If Vince goes on to make runs, he wants to invite Younus, the slip catcher, for dinner.

  7. Eng 238-2published at 16:34

Change here, change there. Rahat Ali. In the gathering gloom, Joe Root cuts for four to move to 96. A push to point has Vince interested in a second run, but Root is happy at the non-striker's end. Dark, wind getting up. Anyone got a brolly?

That shaved the off stump. Yasir couldn't believe it. Things aren't quite going his way today.

  9. Eng 233-2published at 16:33 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

Vince is walking the proverbial tightrope. Yasir was millimeters away from his off stump with a length ball that Vince, stepping forward, chose to leave. Not sure the batsman knew much about how close it was, but Yasir's reaction of pure exasperation said a lot.

Now then, I shall hand you over to Stephan Shemilt, who has just walked in with a massive piece of cake. Hopefully that wasn't the last from the canteen. Over to him.

    Root 91, Vince 14

Possibly for the first time this Test, audible shouts of "Amir, Amir" from the crowd. Pakistan fans clearly finding their voice after not having much to shout about. The "no-ball" crowd return, though, to mark Amir's final ball. Root got a single off the over.

Steven Lancaster: Showers won't last long. I'm in Warrington, it's heading your way and it lasted 15 minutes heavy, though!!!

  13. Eng 227-2published at 16:25 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

No luck for Pakistan as Vince picks up two boundaries off Yasir. Cuts one through point, before a solid drive through cover, those long legs of his giving him plenty of reach forward. Younus mutters away to himself, probably "something unprintable", as Sir Geoffrey would say. And we also appear to have a man sitting on a chicken in the crowd. As you do.

I just wonder how significant that drop will be by Younus Khan. If Vince had been out, playing a loose drive to second slip, I think he would have had one more chance with England. If he can get runs now, it could change his whole life.

  15. Eng 219-2published at 16:21 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

    Root 90, Vince 6

No more the medieval warrior poised ready for battle, Root looks nervous as Amir twice beats his outside edge. Two deliveries, in almost exactly the same line, just different lengths. The first was short-ish and Root kind of tries to fend it off, the second a bit fuller and Root again can only watch in eventual relief as it misses the bat.

Curtis: How many chances do we give James Vince? Dropped on single figures nearly every innings for England, disappointing.

Jack Blackburn: Oh, James Vince. You lucky boy, but if you don't capitalise now you never will.

  17. Eng 219-2published at 16:17 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

Vince goes into a mini-shell after his let-off. Absolutely no element of risk in Yasir's latest over. Root got a single to leave Vince the job of practicing his forward defence. Wind building up a bit I think. Certainly a few fluttering tops.

  18. Eng 218-2published at 16:15 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

So, will this be like Lord's then? Remember when Amir had a few slip catches dropped off his bowling and responded by simply bowling Cook? Matters into own hands and all that.

How lucky is Vince? Misbah said that Pakistan have to sort their fielding out. It went quickly. It's not a great shot.

Younus Khan, not for the first time this series, has dropped a catch at slip, as Vince edged at a full Amir delivery. It looked an awkward attempt, tried to take it at his chest, but it cannoned off his fingers and bounced off his pecs.
