The last time both England openers were bowled by the same bowler was at The Oval in 2001. Atherton and Trescothick both bowled by Shane Warne.

You can tell it's gone a bit grey. So much for it being wall-to-wall sunshine as predicted in the morning. Weathermen, eh?

Yasir's ditched his leg slip, but main slip and short leg still in place. He gets his first shy at Vince, who was out lbw in the first innings at Lord's. He sees out the first two balls and then gets off the mark with a leg side nudge that brings him two and celebrates with exactly the same shot for four. Good start.

James Vince is the new man for England. Amir has the ball, as tea was called at 55.4 overs with the fall of Cook. Vince defends one and leaves another to see out the over.

Pakistan's players again back out at the edge of the boundary as we await the start of play. If you missed any bits of that last session, worry not. The biggest highlight was Alastair Cook getting to his century, and through the magic of video highlights you can relive that moment.

England fast bowler Kate Cross on Test Match Special: There has always been such a big gap between county cricket and internationals. This will fill that gap. The international players coming over will raise the standard and push the youngsters.

Cook played lovely. You can't make criticisms of anything, but maybe he'll be thinking he could have stopped it. All of these things go through your head: "I could have got 200 there". But, when he's got changed and had his tea, he'll think that he's played pretty well.

The partnership was 185, which is easily the best second-wicket stand for England against anybody on this ground.

    Root 87

So, time for Root to continue the good work. Cook played a near-chanceless innings but he was once again undone by Amir. The seamer got him in the first innings at Lord's, and he does so again at Old Trafford. The crowd rose to applaud Cook off as they players went off for tea.

Well bowled. Quick. It kept low, it really did. It might just have caught the end of the bat, Cook playing back expecting it to bounce. Maybe he could have got forward.

    Cook b Amir 105 (Eng 210-2)

You beauty! Well, that's a response-and-a-half from Amir, who gets rid of Alastair Cook in excellent style. A ball that keeps low takes the inside edge of Cook's bat and crashes into the stumps. That is also the tea break, and Pakistan will go in with a measure of happiness.

This is lovely patience and concentration. They are quality players. There's been nothing for the bowlers and the leg-spinner has bowled non-stop for ages. He's had no help.

I understand the beer snakes are making an appearance at Old Trafford. I'll try not to have flashbacks of having contents of said creature once being spilled on me. Amir doesn't do himself any favours with an awful piece of fielding. Cook drives down the leg side, and Amir attempted a slide but the judgement was poor and it runs away for four. Unfortunately for him, he's got to bowl the next over.

    Amir 12-2-43-1

To be fair to Amir, he's not shown much response to the crowd's "no-ball" shouts during his bowling. There is a reaction as Root half-edges through the slip-gully area for four - hands on hips and a grimace. It was a good, rising delivery and Root did well to get on top of it and keep it down.

Cook and Root would be in my World XI. It's a no-brainer. AB de Villiers would get in too, batting at number five.

Bowling change for Pakistan, as Azhar Ali replaces Yasir. Is this an end-change tactic from the visitors? Azhar has a limp, again wristy, sort of action. Not much trouble for Cook and Root. Three from the over.

    Cook 100, Root 73

Not much else you can say about Cook's innings other than "positive". Apart from a quarter-chance off Yasir, the captain has nullified this Pakistan attack. More shouts of "no-ball" from the crowd for every Amir delivery. After the politeness at Lord's, this is hostile territory for the seamer.
